Three fortnights, no pay – Public Works employee complains

Some of the workers who were laid off gather on Public Works building premises

Shop Steward of the Public Works Corporation St. Louis Dumas said he is upset about the manner in which staff were dismissed from work last week and steps should be implemented to not have a repeat of such incident.

Dumas told a media interview last evening, that staff members were treated with disrespect.

Sixteen employees were dismissed this week with no definite date to return. In a letter to those workers, the Public Works Corporation stated financial difficulties as the reason for its action.

“Management have their financial problems, but there was no dialogue with the staff members. I received a call to report to the office and when I did a letter was given to me indicating that I should stay home, because there was no money to pay me,” Dumas said.

According to him, for three fortnights staff has not gotten paid.

“There are difficulties paying staff. They said there isn’t, but for three fortnights we have not gotten paid. We decided that we could hold, but when month end came we decided that we couldn’t take it again. Management got paid and we didn’t,” he said.

Dumas noted that staff vented their frustrations about non-payments of salaries on the morning of March 31, and received the letter the same evening.

He said the “walking letters” were issued because staff were upset about not being paid.

Public Works have always been sending workers home temporarily. employees are just malicious. They need to realise that they are chopping off the hands that feed them.

This is an indication of where the leadership of this country is taking us. The Public Works division is a very vital part of the development of our country. How is it even remotely possible for it to get to this point. Just watch what happens next. It’s called a magic trick for a reason. A slide of hand. Focus on one hand while the other is busy doing something else.
