A high ranking member of an organization that teaches public speaking and leadership skills has said that although its program is not an accredited one, the knowledge gained through it will be of significant benefit towards personal development.
Speaking at the launch of the first ever Toastmasters Association of Dominica on Monday evening, District Governor for Toastmasters 81, Rolande Tobias, said being part of the organization gave him the opportunity to be a radio and TV personality.
“Doing some of the advanced manual such as public relations … I got the opportunity to actually be on television and as a result of the exposure I got I proved myself and my performance … I became a regular television personality. And I’ve been doing radio for quite a while,” he said.
He pointed out that being part of the Toastmasters Club gives good exposure to an individual. “while it is not accredited, you cannot put it on your C.V, but because of what you do you get the exposure and because of that…opportunities open themselves to you,” he said.
Tobias went further to say that there is a distinction between Toastmasters and other voluntary service clubs such as Lion’s and Rotary, since this is the only club which provides members with personal development as its main goal.
“It is a personal development organization … toastmasters is the only organization in the world that is aimed at developing the individual,” he pointed out.
The organization’s mission is “to provide a mutually supportive and positive learning environment in which every member has the opportunity to develop communication and leadership skills, which in turn foster self confidence and personal growth.”
Some of the features of organization’s self-paced program include: speech writing and presenting, interactive meetings, table topics, evaluations, participation in meeting roles, opportunity to conduct meetings, small groups, opportunity to fulfill officer roles and affordable dues.
Over 100 prospective members attended the launch of the organization at the Public Service Union Building on Valley Road.
