Tourism Minister blames UWP for making job ‘extremely difficult’

Tonge said many visitors are afraid to come to Dominica

Tourism Minister Senator Robert Tonge is blaming the opposition United Workers Party (UWP) for negative remarks he said it is making about Dominica, saying they have prevented Dominicans and visitors from coming to the island.

Tonge who was speaking as a guest on Kairi’s Heng Programme on Monday said the opposition is making his job and the job of the Ministry of Tourism “extremely difficult.”

“You can well imagine even just during the Carnival the government increased the budget to make Carnival a bigger and better Carnival and it has been a success. Some persons have said this is one of the best Carnivals they have seen,” he said. “We know that there will always be certain shortcomings and we will work to fixing them but just imagine even Dominicans, even some Dominicans because of all the negativity that they heard, that there is rioting in the streets every day and looting, even Dominicans didn’t come to Dominica.”

He said Dominicans refused to come to Dominica because “they were scared.”

Tonge stated that some children did not allow their parents to come to Dominica because of the negativity.

“Just imagine if a Dominican is not going to come to Dominica, imagine what a visitor is going to do,” he stated.

Tonge said all the work that his ministry is doing, “all of the awareness we are trying to do to differentiate between Dominica and the other countries, all the work that we are doing to ensure that persons who are coming to Dominica are the ones who are aligned with our nature and everything else, all of this is being negatively impacted.”

“And for what reason?” he asked. “Is it the truth? No, it is not the truth.”

He said the government is being accused of being involved in money laundering although a recent report said that is not true.

“It means that even the increased funds that we have gotten from the government to increase in our marketing budget, it means that we have to do so much more,” Tonge said.

He said the negativity is going to affect the entire country.

“Who’s going to suffer? All of us are going to suffer,” Tonge remarked. “The taxi driver, the vendor, everybody is going to suffer because you have less people coming to Dominica when we should have more persons coming to Dominica, so we have to be very careful as to what imagine that we send out there, not only to the local market but the International market.”

I cant say i know mr tonge personally but i can tell milli vanilli was mr tonge favorite group as milli vanilli song blame it on the rain says

    blame it on the rain
you got to blame it on something
    what ever you do
don’t put the blame on you
so mr tonge instead of blaming he and his incompetent friends sought to blame the opposition
as milli vanilli turned out to be frauds so is this inept government a fraud

Really Mr.Tonge, if your job is extremely difficult why don’t you resign? Just admit you…… like all your colleagues and cannot handle the job. I don’t know how you guys sleep at nights, the island is falling apart you guys are in charge but blaming the UWP for that, they are not in control. BLAME BLAME YOUR SO CALL GOVERNMENT.

Robbie, I know what it is. Skerrit decided to pump in more money for carnival and he cannot see positive results for that investment and now he is blaming not only you but also Val. That is not your fault. Certain things are not for sale Robbie and you should know that. Better he had given that money to raise the salaries of our civil servants and everybody would be happier. Don’t be rattled by people like Roosevelt, That is the way he is and can never change. Blaming everyone for what goes wrong except himself. He thinks he is a genius and infallible.

  4. “Tonge is blaming the opposition United Workers Party (UWP) for negative remarks he said it is making about Dominica, saying they have prevented Dominicans and visitors from coming to the island.”

Tongue, are you ignorant, or what?

Read your very own words in the quote above and decided if it makes any sense to you: surely, it makes no sense whatsoever to me. I doubt that the UWP, can make any remarks about Dominica which caused visitors form visiting. The problem is the backwardness of the government; people, and country.

I am a native born in the village of Wesley; sometimes I yearn to go home, nevertheless, when I think of the many obstacles in the way of traveling from Los Angeles, to Dominica, it is not worth my time. No direct flight from anywhere on this planet to Dominica is the greatest obstacle. There is something else which keep visitors away from Dominica, and that is this crap that you all call the island nature island! That is a hindrance; who wants to…

    • Continue:

That is a hindrance; who wants to leave a modern home, to go to Dominica to experience a primitive lifestyle? That is what nature island means!

Secondly, there is nothing significant in Dominica to offer people visiting the island. You have no class restaurant, you do not have any decent places of entertainment; if I visit home accompanied by friends, and would like to sit in a decent club and have a few drinks, there is nothing like that at home.

Nobody want’s to go into a rum shop, on the side of the road to stand holding a glass of white in their hand drinking. The last time I was at home I could not find a decent place to eat, which tourist want to deal with that sort of thing. Such are some of the problems plaguing the country.

As for the crap you talk about making your job harder; you cannot blame that on the UWP, you are in a disorganized regime, a failed government, one that is bankrupt of ideas, you all told a lot of lies, to get into power believing…

    • Finally:

As for the crap you talk about making your job harder; you cannot blame that on the UWP, you are in a disorganized regime, a failed government, one that is bankrupt of ideas, you all told a lot of lies, to get into power believing it was easy, now the time has come for you to produce, you sit with your thumb in your mouth; confused and delusional, with no idea of what you need to do, so you have chosen to blame the UWP for your failure, and incompetence!

You can pass the buck anyway you wish, it will simply return in your lap, Dominica is not going anyplace as long as incompetent idiots are running the country. The sale of diplomatic passports, and the sale of citizenship cannot help, it is not going to last forever, where are the investors you claimed you had standing in line flood Dominica with industries; seems they were invisible, and remains invisible!

      Mr. Tongue
so you trying to tell me Dominicans living abroad were not dissuaded too by the thought of accessing Dominica with LIAT and all de negative vibes pre carnival , didnt that make your job more difficult ?
Well I’ll tell you what , i have a friend who traveled to Da with her family and non Dominican husband .
LIAT left them stranded for 3 days missing their connecting flight, and in desperation cost them additional fares and expenses not budgeted for., The Husband look me in de eye and tell me point blank ”Dominica is a lifetime experience not to be repeated, i have other choices, and my wife has some serious contemplation to consider about her Dominica plans ”.His wife turned her back and i lowered my head .

Prior to Robby being a Minister of the Skeritt led administration, I admired him as a strong young charismatic business man. Today I see a frustrated, disoriented and a man who wants to get out of all that Skeritt commess. If he doesn’t get out as soon as possible, he will destroy the legacy of his beloved father.

I am beginning to become concerned about senator Tonge. The rigors of the position are getting to him and he may need to vacate the post before he loses his head completely. Mr Tonge the UWP has nothing to do with the poor showing of your ministry. Your ministry’s dismal performance is a result of poor management. Update and maintain the country’s sites, clean and upgrade Roseau and teach the stakeholders customer service and you will see the turn around. Increase arrivals as a result of word of mouth advertising in a concomitant benefit of the improvements suggested.

    What a load of rubbish.
Tourism is failing because there is no strategy, the people in charge are largely clueless about their product (an outdoors product means you can’t wear a power suit and sit in the comfort of an AC office 5 days a week), and money allocated to growing tourism is wasted on fetes instead of promoting the island as a nature and outdoors destination. No-one with any understanding of Dominica’s natural environment ever attends international travel shows (staff and managers from the office simply use them as a means to go shopping), we have terrible air access, and our infrastructure is falling apart. You don’t need to be a politician (or even an insurance salesman) to see and understand this. The UWP are a shambles but they are not the reason tourism in Dominica is failing and money is being wasted.

But coming to think of it, this boy for Curtis Tonge was never a real businessman. Because Curtis is his dad, the people simply ascribed business acumen to Robbie. What a shame! What an utter waste of time! Business people are used to analysing the information, and reaching a logical conclusion from the analysis. Robbie’s conclusion that UWP should be blamed is puerile, and nonsensical. There is no credible information to support Robbie’s conclusion. His conclusion is therefore illogical, and cannot hold water, and should be discarded. But worse still, he has shown the public what emptiness occupies his cranium. Poor boy; I wonder how his kids secretly think of him! No wonder the former Ms Shillingford left ………………

Is there rioting in the streets and looting everyday, Mr Tonge? Honestly, is there? Of course, the answer is a resounding “NO!” So why did you seek to blame the UWP for something which is not truthful? For many of us out there, we understood that you accepted an offer to join the Cabinet of Roskit because you understood that the DLP government was lacking in entrepreneurship and private sector competence. We never understood that you were a DLP guy, and that you would one day posture as someone eyeing a parliamentary seat. Don’t you understand that the business center of Dominica DID NOT vote for Roskit? Roseau South, Roseau Central, and Roseau North said “NO” to Roskit, so how foolish of you to now alienate yourself from the people who patronise FDI, Perkys and Tonge Refrigeration? Are you that chuppit, Robbie?

Robbie Tong you have become a … figure. Bro once you associate with dogs you will get fleas. The visible absence of Dominicans at the Carnival celebration is mainly due to the harassment by immigration Custom and Border Control. People with Green cards for example just dont want to deal with the harassment. The other factor is the level of difficulty and the exorbitant cost of coming to Dominica.
A one day demonstration is not enough to keep people from coming to play mass. It is the minister’s respondibility to do an honest assessment of the situstion and to fi d a remedy cause if Trump holds up this Border control aggression the matter will get worse.
The majority of diadporan returning fir carnival come from North America and if at least the cist to travel to Dominica is reduced then at least more Dominicans with US passports would be willing to come home despite ICE harassment.
The habit of this government is to blame others rather than to tackle the problem as…

Tongue need to real. Coming to Dominica is a heartache and headache because of all the time it takes to get there. The roads are terrible. The airport is another problem. Some of your unprofessional attendants at the airport.
Last year i came to my country Dominica. When i saw a lady just pass through and did not stand in line like everyone else I make a comment and your attendant was not pleased. He had me standing for a long time and refuse to provide the service and bypass me by taking people from the other line. I stated that their friend are the ones passing with drugs. I also told him if he was in the United States he would be fried which left to his actions. Fix the problems affecting your tourist industry, We are tired of the situation which has become the NORM and you expect visitors to accept it. We do not have to accept it no more.

    2011 – 75,546 caused by UWP

    2008 – 81, 119
    2007 – 77,809 caused by UWP
    2006 – 84,041

What you need to do is take a page from Antigua…. have you heard of what they are currently doing???? Though they have an international airport, they aren’t sitting on their A$@ and waiting for UK tourist to accidentally bounce up on info about Antigua… they are out there boosting marketing efforts, trying to capture the markets.

Another thing, all you did was complain about the riot, where was your effort to do damage control…where was your destination crisis management team… a team to readily respond to any and every issue that may cause damage to the destination’s image?????

Once again, Robbie is playing the same old game of Master and Slave, while ignoring the elephant in the room. Though the Labor Government did not create many of Dominica’s long standing problems, their lack of leadership and continued blindness from people like Robbie who are idea and common sense bankrupt continue to keep Dominica in the dark.
As I have lamented in the past, the idea of development for many people across the globe, simply means being able to access basic and routine services in the places where they live and visit. For example, how many of our public facilities lack clean rest rooms for patrons to use? The state of the dirty, open smelly drains is another. Open dump trucks being used as garbage trucks is another. And the list goes on and on.
It saddens me to listen to these who are always on a plane traveling somewhere, yet advocate for the same backwardness that we have unfortunately come to know, love and cherish.

Please Mr Tinge Wheel and don’t come back because is a load of crock you are spewing. If there is no more money to fix Roseau let us do community service but it is time for both Roses and Portsmouth to get a facelift, it has been said for too long now is time for action and stop all these excuses. Bon! Please read what the critics are saying ,they all over the websites. The few cruise visitors say they will stay on board next time. Please read .

For god sake Robbie, make the country more attractive, a better place then instead of blaming the opposition when all of you are in charge with a big majority. I am not buying this passing the buck thing. I supported labour when your P.M. came into power but he is in charge and if things go wrong he must take the blame. your party controls the local media, they have the money, have most of the seats so what can opposition do to you again? We are not stupid, it was not the opposition that gave diplomatic passports to crooks to make us all ashamed overseas but your leader did that. Deal with that and clean up the mess.

People did not come because it takes two days to travel down and two days to return home if not more time. Too many people have been through that to be fooled by this sorry excuse. As Dominicans, we all know that there is NO “rioting in the streets every day and looting”. Why mention something that is not taking place.
Be inventive with ideas to increase visitors experience so they can return and tell others. Encourage and give incentive to local hoteliers so they can advertise and get stay overs. Passing the blame on to the UWP is not going to achieve anything.

you see it as negativity and complaining robbie, we see it as civic duty !
let me put it in terms you might better understand… we are VOICING our concern and evaluating the INHERENT RISKS that your administration is seemingly “conveniently” OBLIVIOUS to..

As much as i admire your business savy Mr. Tonge i believe you have drank the cool aid.

“Tonge stated that some children did not allow their parents to come to Dominica because of the negativity.” Children didnt allow their parents to travel? I cannot remember being able to allow my parents to do anything much from from preventing them from travelling. Parents like those shouldnt come here if thats the case.

All any reasonable person has to do is go online or ask a question to someone who is SENSIBLE locally. I mean there are people here who are like the trump supporters in the US who sensationalize everything. i understand their need for some kind of excitement. but i mean, it is not jus the opposition who is speaking out against the government. Sensible people who are not followers of any party also have issues with the way many things are happening here. and rightfully so. For example the way in which our roads are maintained, the set up at the roseau ferry terminal

to the maintenance of the airport, the state of the Woodridge bay ferry terminal, the non use of the Portsmouth Ferry Terminal, our level of customer service, or lack there off. Why not address these factors that affect tourism first, before looking for someone else to blame. The uwp is speaking out against perceived corruption, everyone has a right to regardless of whether the support a party or are not into politics. what you are asking people to do is to shut up, because it may make people think the place is in chaos, and thus affecting your tourism arrivals target. So maybe you didnt meet your target this season, that is not the uwp’s agenda, their agenda is to address some key issues. whatever violence occured in Feb after the peaceful rally which ended at 5pm is a separate matter which the uwp themselves have spoken against.

        * Woodrigde Bay and Portsmouth cruise ship births – not ferry terminals. That was an error.

And while you are at it put a decent restaurant at Melville Hall, that place is overpriced and does not even serve our own coffee. And Robbie, get them to put that departure tax in the ticket price instead of having to shove money through a little hole in the wall outside the booking hall. mThgat is a backward step, not development.. I am really pissed off the way you treat your visitors. Bt you all don’t see and feel that because every party hack passing through vip.

Clean the place first and we will come with money.

Yep. If it’s the uwp fault. Their fault that we don’t have an I international airport for ease of travel for us and the tourist to come in. Their fault that skerrit hired a host of ….. diplomats. Their fault that was it not for cbi the government couldn’t buy toilet paper. Their fault that how many hotels incomplete n the north due to failed investors. It’s indeed the uwp fault that monfared good arrested. T . What else did I miss Mr minister? Lennox need to take personal responsibility for all that cr*p that is going down. What else had the uwp forced on Dominicans? Oh I remember…. Their fault that the Bailey bridge in macoucherie fell apart last week. Nuff said Lennox…. Time to apologize
