Truckers not ruling out protest action in payment controversy

dump truckProtest action is not being ruled out as controversy concerning payments to members of the Tipper Truckers Association continues unabated.

Speaking to DNO, President of the Tipper Truckers Association Earl Laudat, said that the Association is not ruling out any possibility that will get them the monies due to them.

“I am not dismissing nothing … I am not sure yet, when I meet my members we will decide because the little energy we have remaining now we cannot talk again,” he said.

The truckers have been working on the Pont Casse to Melville Hall Road Project and have not been paid for up to seven months.

Laudat noted that the time was ripe to rethink the trucker’s position on the matter.

“I think we should go look for the Bishop and the Pope now, so they can call the president of Dominica and at that time he can maybe take a stick and get to the Minister because he said he (the minister) doesn’t want to comment on that matter,” Laudat said.

According to Laudat, the monies that they are waiting patiently for are only for January and February since bills from March are still sitting on the desk of Jack Gardakhan, the contractor.

He described the entire matter as “sad.” “It is so sad, that the same truck drivers that are involved in doing things in the country, to see the country going, have not gotten paid for seven months,” he pointed.

When contacted, Public Works Minister, Rayburn Blackmoore, said he the truckers are not working for the Government and they should voice their concerns to the relevant authorities.

“I cannot speak about that… the truckers association does not work for us…the truckers Association were spoken to; so they can speak to the main contractor or the consultant so I don’t have any thing on that right now,” he said.

Hello Mr Laudat why don’t you file a Civil Suit against the contractor for none payment. The Government paid Mr Gardakhan for most of the work which is completed therefore he should have funds to pay the truckers. Seven months your truckers haven’t been paid then you should take a rule book slow down. If that don’t get you the payment then your truckers should strike and we will hear what Mr Blackmoore have to say about that.

That is an odd statement to come from a Minister of Gov’t, who is the representative of the people, voted in by the people.

The project is the gov’t’s own. The contractors work for them. So he trying to say that when foreign companies are given license to work in Dominica, what ever happens to the labourers have nothing to do with the gov’t?

But I bet you that should the truckers take some kind of industrial action, the gov’t would be the first to intervene and arrest the truckers, but as for getting paid, they not in that.

Well, that is representation for you wee pal. Blackmore take a lesson from Douglas and jump on a truck and go and protest with the truckers, your people.
Shameful statement that from the minister.

But anyways truckers, like everybody saying the ball is in all you court. All you that feeling the heat…

A Voice; I take a loan from a Bank, give you the contract to build the house, you employ people, who is responsible to pay the workers you employ???

Can your employees sue me for their non-payment?? When did grown men like you became so foolish nah?? Well tell your employee to sue me…. ok my advise to the Truckers is to TAKE GADDAKHAN TO COURT FOR THEIR MONEY!!!!!! end of story, the government do not owe them, they did not work for the government they worked for Jacque Gaddakhan!!!!

While it is true to say that the contractor is responsible for paying the truckers it is the Govt. which contracted the loan for financing it and is responsible for repaying that money. The loan agreement was signed, in person by Roosevelt Skerrit. The last tranch of some 10 million Euros was made available only just over a year ago. Where is that money we all are indebted for??

I cannot understand how the truckers can work seven months with no pay. Look like their bank account is huge. I cannot work one month without pay because I would not be able to buy one bread to eat. The truckers are all rich with huge bank accounts so the minister not bothered about them. They must be getting money somewhere else.

My sentiments too. They don’t even seem interested in getting the money.
I DON’T LISTEN TO THEM. They too contributed to Dominica being in this state of hopelessness.

If bus drivers and truckers unite in solidarity a lot can be done or achieved overnight. So quit talking and act.

These guys are unbelievable. Where is it in the civilized world that one can go for seven months without pay and still be contemplating on a course of action? Meanwhile the government of the day who are supposed to be on the side of and represent the people (truckers in this case)and even more so since the work done was on a government project; have washed its hands and remains on the sidelines with no interest in how these guys pay their bills, mortgages etc and feed their families. I guess they figure that the guys can line up at the clinic on Wednesdays and in that way be forever thankful and loyal to sugar daddy. Anywhere else in the world the government and contractor would have already seen what none of them would welcome; PROTEST ACTION. ONLY IN DA

Regardless of whether you agree with the actions of the truckers, you have to wonder about Minister Blackmoore,s response. Sure, the truckers are employed by Gardakhan but in his position as the minister in charge of Public Works he should be concerned when workers on a government project have not been paid for several months.
It is in the interest of government to ensure that workers on public projects are paid fairly and on time.As a representative of government, we expect the minister to show that he cares. Is that too much to ask?

Is this really Galakan’s fault?? Or did the government mess up in its negotiating the contractual agreement?? If the roads are being done by Galakan, they are not being done for his estate!! They are being done for the government and people of Dominica and as such, the government HAS TO BE part of this agreement! You all heard the truckers referring to the government as THE CLIENT!! So why is it that they want to remove themselves from the equation??? Why is it, if this is all Galakan’s responsibility, why is it that having realised that the work would not have been finished by the deadline last year June or thereabouts, the government did not take Galakan to task saying that he would have to pay interest for the period of extention until completion?? Instead the same government went looking for two other contractors to come in to assist, yet they did not tell the Dominican people where the money to contract them would come from!! Now, even with that help, they are yet to finish and so the minister is running from the hard questions!! Stand up and face the music Mr. Blackmore!!! Answer the questions……..Whose money was used to this point to pay the other contractors added to the project?? Was that the money meant for the truckers?? What does the contract say in regard to payment of truckers?? When will they get paid and where will you get the money from?? Mr. Skeritt, what happened to the negotiating skills which you alone seem to have in government?? You holding the reins, the purse and the negotiating power all to yourself and you call that TRANSPARENCY sir??? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

I agree they are certified fools…….their wives and girlfriends should walk out on them…so if they don’t work for the government who signed the contract with Gardakhan? why did the minister once give Gardakhan a deadline for completion of the project? Gardakhan holds a Dominican passport … if it was a Dominican born owing them they would know how to shake a cutlass in de man face….But I will never understand how OUR government always giving foreigners rights over us…when is not the Chinese is the frenchman…

Our country is now made up of a set of dam little boys in men pants playing with toys, these are the examples for our young boys. The joker from … said he not in their business, and wait as soon as election is called these same dump trucks will be the ones dumping Dominicans to campaign and taking them from the airport to be dumped in a polling station. We are very sick in this fool’s paradise. Good Luck!! We suddenly forget how to stand up for what we believe, wait when another Government comes into office, they will be protesting if the river is dirty after days of constant rain.

GARDAKHAN is the contractor, who is the owner of the project… Why is the government not looking out for its people. Was this the best that the minister could offer.. A clean bowl of water to wash his hands clean like pontius pilate. The energy level of frustration will feed into Trois Piton and then we go see!!

If I have a project to be done,I have contracted “A” to do the project, can I force or tell “A” to employ “B”? Now “A” goes and employs “B”. Remember, I had given “A” the contract, so “A” has the money. For some reason or the other, “B” is beginning to encounter difficulty with “A” for wages, how can “B” come to me requesting money. I will in no way be able to help “B”. I would want the readers to understand me very clear. I guess this is the scenario between the Gov’t and Gardakhan.I also will remember when Gardakhan wanted to bring in his own trucks from Guda., members of the Tippers Trucking Asso. were protesting, which ofcourse I find this was none scense .
