US and Dominica remain united – Hilary Clinton

US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton

Below is an Independence message to Dominica from US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton.

On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I am delighted to send best wishes and congratulations to the people of Dominica as you celebrate 34 years of independence this November 3.

The United States and Dominica remain united by shared history, values, and strong cultural ties. Our collaboration within programs such as the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative and the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief advances our common aspirations and strengthens democracy, rule of law, and human rights. Our joint efforts will increase security, improve access to health care, improve economic opportunities, and create a brighter future for all our people.

The United States is committed to strengthening our bonds of friendship. I wish you a happy, safe, and prosperous independence day as you enjoy some of Dominica’s best music and dance during the Cultural Gala and honor your country’s heritage during the annual parade.

I read the antigua observer last week and they gave Antigua the exact same well wishes. just substitute the names of the islands. I mean word for word same speech. and to the clown referee. the speeches congratulate countries for independence not governments.

You know that your comment is a negtive one, so you are asking for it not to be missed with.

You just annottake the Congratulation message as that, you had to be negative.

Dominicans like you that have Dominica with NEGATIVITY over it like that.

Say that was good on the U.S.A to congratulate.

Say God Bless Dominica and wish us well in the coming years.

   :?:This is diplomatic language. When leaders address nations, they do usually mention and address the government. In this case the secretary of state for the U.S,did not. They are definitely not pleased with the governance of Roosevelt Skerrit and his government. But they are watching until they decide his fall!

Yes it is true that the Government of the United States of America has concerns about our past and current relationships that our current Leaders have and have had with Anti-American Countries in the Middle East, China andHugo Chavez but the small scraps of support that the United States gives to us, the ‘People’ of Dominica is almost nonexistent to our sustainability and future.

Yes , I wish there was s better relationship between our two Countries but it does take two to make a relationship.

We can only expect meager handouts from the US in the near future because Dominica is not priority to their needs or their National Security.

Yes, Dominica recieves funds to combat drugs and guns going through the Carribean. So do other Caribbean Countries. But what about the support we need for our future. Where is the working relationship between our two Countries.

The reality is, there is none because the United States ‘knows’ what is going on in Dominica. And as a protective Big Brother, or should I say overbearing Parent, will not help the ‘people’ of Dominica until our Leaders have a vision and a voice that is conducive to the United States.

Perhaps, as the PEOPLE OF DOMINICA we should truly examine what we have recieved in support from our so called relationships with Non-Demoncratic Countries where there freedoms are limited. Where has it gotten us and what is OUR FUTURE?

I am no fool. When one is hungry, a piece of bread is a piece of bread. But one does have a choice to either go hungry and have Pride or take a scrap of leftovers and be a servant of an oppressive Country like China, who throws us scraps so we will do their bidding.

‘When the truth is spoken, some may not hear but for those who do, none forget.’

    • Really?
      November 5, 2012

But wait, isn’t Dominica an Independent country? Didn’t you just celebrate independence 34? what does america owe us?

    • Amazing
      November 5, 2012

Dominican Mon and others like it remind me of the old men in the desert expressing their own feelings with the clause: “Thus saith the Lord” thereby making it sacrosanct.

All the Cruise ships come from the USA. The only international airline serving Dominica is a US airline (American Eagle), Ross University is USA direct investment in Dominica. The remittances that our people get from the USA, Not China, Cuba or Venezuela. Dominica exports to the Eastern Caribbean, Europe and America, Not China, Cuba or Venezuela. Have you heard of the USAID program and the US Peace Corp program? We get more US tourist than Chinese or Venezuelans tourists. The USA contributes millions annually to our economy. THERE IS NONE SO BLIND AS HE WHO WILL NOT SEE.
The government is unable to manage our relationship with the USA as a result we are losing American Eagle next year and the Cruise ships have stop coming. Could this be as a result of being ungrateful? Could it?

      • Amazing
        November 5, 2012

Mujahardin, Did you hear yourself? Didn’t the news say that the whole of the Caribbean includinng Puerto Rico would lose American Eagle come March, 2013, because of bankrupcy? Get your facts before you indulge in your favourite past-time of crying down Dominica.

America will support Dominica in spite of what we hear on the streets back home. As a proud people we have to strive to move forward and we should not condone the cronies who think they own Dominica. As a Son of the Soil, my prayer is that may God continue to bless Dominica and its people.

Once again, the US State department avoids mentioning the government of Dominica in its message of congratulations on this anniversary of independence. State Department message is addressed “to the people of Dominica” without mentioning the government of Dominica. This is a diplomatic way for the United States to express its dissatisfaction with the administration of Roosevelt Skerrit which has grown increasingly cozy with Hugo Chavez of Veneuela, not to mention Dominica’s membeship in ALBA, and by extension, frienship with Iran, and the recent spat over USAID.
To be sure, the US is carefully monitoring events in Dominica, and indeed other countries in the OECS, relative to entities that are considered to be hostile to US interests.

      In Defense of Mrs. Clinton

      My dear Referee:

The term “People of Dominica” includes its government.

When we refer to a corporation, there is no need to single out its Board of directors. In the same vein, Dominica is a republic ruled under the principles of Democracy. The Government was formed “by the people and for the people”, and therefore its government is subsumed within the term “People of Dominica”. There is no need to single out any one organization or its governing body for that matter.

That wont stop Skeritt from beating His chest and saying how much Euro he want from France for the purchase of geothermal generated electricity.
        ‘it will be like having
oil”hmmm so now he will ply Poilitics with that money ” I only want so much from France” is he referring to Himself as the Government?

      • Referee

My friend, no matter how much you try to dress it, the language of diplomacy usually reveals the state of affairs between countries.
If relations between the US and the government of Dominica, had been warm or even normal, let’s not fool ourselves, the congratulatory message would have mentioned the government. Indeed, it is normal for diplomatic messages between friendly nations to make reference to both the country and its government.
So to believe that the failure of the US State Department to reference the government of Dominica in its congratulatory message is either accidental or meaningless, is both naive and uninformed.
