The University of the West Indies (UWI) Open Campus Dominica, in collaboration with the Rex Nettleford Foundation, will host the premier of “Renaissance Man,” a documentary film on the life of Professor Rex Nettleford on Thursday, February 6, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. at the UWI Open Campus Dominica Auditorium.
Professor Rex Nettleford, Vice Chancellor Emeritus of The UWI, was a Caribbean scholar, social critic and choreographer. Throughout his career, it was his desire to illustrate to children of disadvantaged backgrounds that their place of origin need not define their outcome in life.
This 45-minute documentary satisfies this objective as it tells the story of his life from rural Jamaica, to being one of four people in the world selected for the centenary celebrations of the Rhodes Scholarships at Oxford, in honour of his outstanding and varied achievements.
There is no entry fee, and the film viewing and discussion are open to the public. However, a donation to the Rex Nettleford Foundation would be welcome. There will be similar premieres throughout the Eastern Caribbean, Toronto, New York, Washington D.C., Miami and London later this year.
