UWP spreads Christmas cheer

The Christmas season is a time for celebrating with family and friends over a variety of home cooked meals but for some, this opportunity seems almost far fetched.

In an effort to bring Christmas cheer to some less fortunate citizens, United Workers Party (UWP) candidate for the Roseau Central constituency, Joseph Issac,  presented hampers to the Grotto home and Wisdom to Know Rehab Center on Friday.

The hampers, which consisted of dry goods, local grown yams, dasheen, plantains and beans, were given to the institutions as part of the party’s “Coast to Coast in 25” campaign.

Issac in his presentation to the Grotto Home said “it is with a warm heart that we, of the Roseau Central Constituency, give these gifts.”

He said Christmas is a time for giving and “as we approach the Christmas season we are calling on all Dominicans to support the Grotto Home because as a party we are focused on helping all Dominicans; the underprivileged, the helpless, those who have challenges, the unemployed and all Dominicans.

Party leader, Lennox Linton, added that it is his party’s goal to make Dominica a better place.

“If we are to do that it means our elderly in Dominica must have the best place to live,” he said. “We are happy for all of the efforts that have gone so far in allowing that to happen but when we come into government we will be paying even closer attention to that to ensure that the real needs of our elderly, especially the disadvantaged, we will be taking very special care of them.”

Supervisor of the Grotto Home, Lucia Blaize, thanked the UWP for the donation

In their presentation to the Wisdom to Know Rehab Center, both Linton and Issac pledged the party’s support in improving the institution.

The center is currently located in the old Scouts headquarters near the St Mary’s Primary School and is being run by Bonti Liverpool.

“We recognize the challenges in regards to the physical infrastructure that you have to be working under and we are saying that we will be committed to the mission of improving the facility for you and the occupants that you have. When we get into office, we will improve the facility and in the meantime we are calling on the government to look at the situation … the facility needs improvement.” Issac noted.

Liverpool welcomed the assistance pointing out that the government also made the same promise to him during a visit last week.

Good Job UWP! Goood Job! You guys are doing great! Keep the pressure on and keep working for a better and blessed place! You guys are a group of politicians of high repute and love and affection for the people esp the poor.
This Government has long thrown Dominica to the beast of the fields due to their bad decisions and alleged corrupt practices. These folks who support this Government doesn’t love Dominica, they just love their pockets and their own interest.
Only UWP can bring change in this nation.
It matters not if these Labour Go to church and call themselves Christian, time will tell anyone can call them self Christian. These Labour party Government and their supports doesn’t give notthing about the poor and oppress! The Poor need liberation and freedom. Its very much immoral and a big sin to vote this government back into office….. Dominicans cannot and should not continue to take foolishness from politicians. Call them to account for their actions… Dominica must become a state where rouge and corrupt politicians find themselves in jail and face hard times in stock farm.. for tooo long stock farm is for malaweee and poor people… Jail should be for everybody- even for those in high office who break the law…. Those who break the law are not setting any good example for the youthsssss..A strong warning to the uwp… if you guys win the elections and are unable to perform don’t for a minute think Dominicans should take bad practices from ya alll….
So UWP come clean and keep it clean and God will bless ya all! They say God is good but God doesnot condone to corruption and racketeering! God has and will call all of them to Judgement.
Let freedom ring in Dominica! Let Freedom Ring in the east, west, North and South! let freedom ring for the Youths, the poor, Oppress and those who are rubbed of their dignity by this incompetent government who only care for the rich and those who support them!
So UWP good job, make sure u guy keep applying pressure in this government until the break down and disappear forever! labour should disappear for ever cause they are not bringing blessings on Dominica! Wind of Change!
Every minister has failed, every ministry has failed so this is a failed state so UWP should revive the place…………. keep the pressure on UWP so as to x out this failed government!
To the labour Party: Do you guys think that you all old tricks of calling early elections can work this time? If you all are so powerful call elections now nah? Call it now so u all will find out what shock will run through ya veins! Pay the people for votes, pay foreigners to come to vote and place a burden on people of Dominica, just wanna warn those who come to vote on chattered flights, that God will deal with ya all for ya wicked and sinful actions if you guys don’t repent and stop that foolishness in Dominica!

Ahead of Sunday’s World AIDS Day, Sir Elton John says the HIV/AIDS epidemic could be defeated today, without a cure, if stigma and discrimination was stripped away from the virus by society.

Writing in USA today, the singer and campaigner said: “It has been 30 years since AIDS first surfaced and began decimating communities throughout America. We are now perhaps in the final stretch of the long journey toward a cure. This March, a Mississippi baby was confirmed as another person potentially cured of HIV. French researchers suggested that 14 patients appear to be functionally cured. Experts are openly debating how close we are to beating the disease.”

“Lost in this discussion, however, is a sad reality: Science has already given us the means to end this epidemic, but stigma toward those with AIDS has prevented us from doing so.”

Sir Elton added: “The reality of the HIV/AIDS epidemic today is that the people who are most at risk for infection and illness have been historically denied quality health care and continue to face systematic discrimination and disenfranchisement. In other words, they are poor people, people of colour, people who are gay, lesbian or transgender, and people who use drugs.

“The science of medical treatment has progressed significantly — and yet, our attitudes toward these communities, and our treatment of them, are preventing society from implementing measures that could essentially eradicate the epidemic.”

Sir Elton concluded: “I hope and pray that science will find a cure for AIDS very soon. But more than a new medical breakthrough, we need a breakthrough in our understanding of what really drives this epidemic, and how our lack of compassion for those suffering from HIV/AIDS is making the epidemic so much wors

Reading these comments make me sometimes ashamed to say I am from Dominica and even recommend visitors to Dominica.THis is a World Wide Web and when people google dominica DNO comes up and they read these comments to get an idea of the country and it’s people.
It really doesn’t matter which party is giving a donation to the less fortunate and what they are giving.it is the gesture that counts and the people who recieve it are grateful.those gesture are done everyday in the US and who cares who receive or give it whether it’s republican or democrat.IT DOESN’T MATTER!!!!!!!!
Politics is breaking down the country. There is no growth within the minds of the people and that’s why the country is not moving with the times .It is stagnant because the people minds are stagnant.GROW my people GROW,take your heads out of the sand like turtles and breathe the fresh air of life. The saying goes for all”think of what you can do for Dominica and not what Dominica can do for you”
Some may dislike because it hits the nail on the head anddddddd the cycle continues.

DNO do not always publish my blogs, because I am a firm opponent of the corrupt DLP, and this is for reasons that i know are justified. They (DLP)don’t care a dam about Dominica.

All what they were complaining the DLP doing is that they want to do.
They said DLP was fooling the masses with ham and turkey, so now it look like its there time to fool with yam and green plantain.
They doh want Dominica to work with China and Venezuela cause they are communist states now they say they will “review” their agreements. So it looks like reviewing an agreement will make China and friends non communist.
And every thing Linton say his followers repeating the same thing, When UWP say China was a wrong choice they was a wrong choice when they say If China work with UWP it will be a good choice it is a good choice.

What i don’t understand with some People in Dominica well ( Labourites), though everyone has the right to their opinion ,is they stand on the side and say , stuff like what UWP doing right ? now when they start doing or does something , they the( Labourites) say oh this and oh that . As a party don’t you people think that they must start somewhere? knowing that they want to show you( Labourites)and the rest of Dominica what they are willing do do as a party and the next government ? If it was a group from St,Thomas or America or any other individual who donated the hampers , guess you guys would not say anything . so it does not matter just because it’s from UWP, and besides the party has new members , new energy so there will be new ideas .Just be thankful and happy and still vote for your labor party. And keep in mind i was born and raised Labor but i am a level minded person who appreciates all good things .

    Election… time to give.
Hope that it is being done sincerely.

I saw something yesterday on the Leader of Opposition’s page, or what ever his title is about an elderly couple who got a home since 2009 and they have no toilet.

I was very disappointed in that story because they were blaming the government for failing to provide a toilet.

yes, a toilet is necessary- but havign a proper roof of their heads was the most vital part. I foudn myself asking is the glass half full or hal empty?

adn this is how i am seeing things from the eyes of the UWP. I thik it’s a shame that 5yrs later they are complaining when they did NOTHING to help. I i realised yesterday that this was the pattern – they criticise everything but have doen NOTHING to fix or help.
Now the 21 in 25 is going aroudn and for political mileage they are tryign to score points off poor people.

but i find myself asking – why didn’t you do soemthnig before? why now? what are you going to do about it?

is the glass half full or half empty?

    November 29, 2013

It is so funny that when the labour party gives, their critics say that it is because of the anticipated election or another Red Clinic initiative. It is said that they are making people into beggars and even call the people on the receiving end lazy. We are witnessing the same being done by the said critics, I wonder what are they calling it?

Make no mistake, I think that it is a good idea to help out the less fortunate but we must not be that bias, malicious and make hypocrisy the center of our lives. What is good for one may just be good for all. Lets all celebrate the season and give generously (more than a plantain and a yam).

  37. Jennifer
    November 29, 2013

It’s about time we start looking on the brighter side of life. This is a great gesture. 1 plus 1 equals two that’s the main point here. It does not matter who they are the whole fact is they are helping those in need. BE HAPPY!

    • Anonymous
      November 30, 2013

Would you say the same if it was the labour party doing it?

    • November 30, 2013

Giving the elderly a hand of banana and a yam, and PUBLISHING that PICTURE, is kind of INSULTING, NOT HELPING. The people need food, yes, but this is NOT a gesture to acknowledge as HELPING. Where is the FISH, CHICKEN, ETCETERA, to prepare with the BANANA and YAM? Besides, the elderly should not even be eating these HEAVY foods.

THAT IS NOT SPREADING THE CHRISTMAS CHEER. The UWP is criticizing the DLP and this is how they are portraying their way of helping?
