Victim of Pagua Guest House attack now receiving treatment in Miami

Rick Davison, one of the persons who was injured in the Pagua Guest House attack, is now in Miami receiving treatment.

At his side is his wife Alicia Davison who told Dominica News Online that she is angry her husband has to endure such agony.

“Not only did we have to endure such a horrific event in our lives of both physical and mental pain,” she said. “I am now looking over at my husband who now lying in a hospital bed after surgery for a fractured skull & cheek bone in total agony….and for what? Quite frankly I am angry.”

She said despite the horrific experience she and her husband endured, Dominica for them is the most wonderful place. “Anywhere and everywhere, there are always a few bad apples, they unfortunately found us. But we also found the most wonderful people right in Dominica,” Davison stated.

The attack which occurred last Sunday night resulted in the death of Irishman Joe Costello. Rick and Alicia were injured.

The incident shocked Dominicans from all walks of life and many are now calling for stiffer penalties, including the death sentence, to stem a growing trend of criminality on the island.

I, too, hope and pray for a speedy and complete recovery to both Alicia and Rick.

May those who had any part in this horrific event soon be brought to justice.

My sympathy to Mr. Costello’s family as well.

I do wonder, however, how things might have turned out if those who were “shot” with pepper spray had instead been shot with a slug from a 9mm gun.

The injuries Rick and Alicia suffered are more grievous than reported and the wounds on Mr. Costello are vastly more gruesome than the authorities have admitted (I talked to Alicia today).

This incident is going to cause much greater harm to Dominica than many right now can imagine. The impact on tourism will be large and speaking to many Americans, Canadians and a few British living in both Calibishie and Wesley there may be a number rethinking their investments in Dominica or even considering leaving.

My home being robbed repeated times and not even being able to leave a door open for a few minutes or locking up things like the water hose immediately after use or it will disappear is becoming very tiresome.

Once a reputation of crime starts it will take a massive effort to change perceptions. Sadly this is another nail in the coffin against the effort to make Dominica a friendly and safe place.

Sure, but do you want to live behind locked doors fearful if you walk to the neighbors somebody will rob your home? Night burglars are walking right into peoples rooms and taking cell phones and cash. Endless tourists are being preyed on in the various little hotels and other rentals.

It’s out of hand and getting worse. What happens if these tourists start disappearing? The loss of the summer cruise boats is bad enough for the economy. Add a reputation for crime and we may well lose a lot more.

Its really sad to hear what seems to be an increase in crimes in DA.As a people we need to stand as a team and face those responsible head on before more of this occurs. We often turn a blind eye to such incidents, but in the long run we all will be affected, when such things like tourism starts to decline. Think about it people and stop bickering.

This situation touched my heart. I wish Rick well, that in time he will be fully recovered. It is sad that he and his wife experienced such a trauma and injuries.
Alicia is a broadminded and loving lady who continues to love Dominica. I pray and hope that Rick will be better in time and that they will return to Dominica.
I hope that when I visit Dominica in a few months as early as next year, carnival time, they will be there. I will personally (a with a few other people) make it a point of duty to visit their hotel and look forward to having either brunch or lunch or dinner.
God bless you Rick and Alicia! My prayers are with you.
We are all God’s children. We are to wish each other well, to help others along the way, to support each other through good times and bad times be it by a few words of encouragement. God is pleased with these types of humble and loving sacrifice.

Seriously if i were in her shoes i would have nothing good to say..So this tells u that these people are really good people, and it makes me angry that these criminals had to put these people who are bringing in revenue in our country through this pain.
I sympathize with the family of the man who lost his life so senselessly and i wish Rick a speedy recovery..
We Dominicans should keep these people in our prayers..May the Good Lord give them courage and strength in this difficult time.
We Dominicans are good people, helpful and very friendly with the exception of a few bad apples..Generally we are a peaceful Nation!!

I think all Dominicans should be outraged at this crime. Not because of the victims’ notionality, but because it could have happened to any Dominican.
    Let justice prevail.
There is no justification to this crime, and the criminals should be taught a good lesson.

Instead of rushing to conclusions and in the process compromising the investigations and good name of Dominica, why not let the Police do their jobs and have this matter properly handled by them and the judiciary?

Most of the criticisms here are obviously destructive and not at all helpful. If anyone has information that could speedily bring this case to justice, then give it to the Police. Hopefully, for whoever is found guilty, the punishment will fit the crime.

        August 7, 2011

So what is the alternative? I thought they were seeking assistance from Scotland Yard or the FBI? Surely we cannot just settle for the no-confidence posture and leave it at that.

Maybe both the commissioner and deputy commissioner should be relieved of their duties (they obviously do not get along anyway) over this matter and be replaced by more suitable persons, in an effort to protect Dominica and its law abiding citizens from the negativity arising from crime in general.

To Rick and Alicia my family and I met you a couple of years ago at the restaurant. We moved to Dominica around the same year but now we have all moved back to Florida. My family and I are very sorry to hear what has happened to you,Rick and Joe. I sympathize with you. Living in Dominica is patients (the system). You all have endure a horrific experience on the island where there is no law and order. The youth has no respect, everyone curses (daily vocabulary). You all are from Miami, Florida never experience anything like this and it is a SHAME you all had to come to the island where I was born to be treated like that. I feel so bad and shame like wise.
I am happy you all are back in the US, especially for your husband he needs proper medical treatment. Head injuries cause severe headaches and affect your vision. There are some good people on the island. And the people in the North love you guys.

One thing I must say, God is good, God is great because it could of been worst. More people loosing their lives. It is sad this had to happen, for the Authorities to take crime serious in Dominica. Crime is a disease and it can drive out foreigner investors and tourism. it does not need to be treated, it needs to be exterminated.

We also sympathize with Joe’s family and a speedy recovery to Rick. Much Love Alicia.

    • DADE-DOM
      August 6, 2011

I’m from Miami My self. I moved to New York then to the island a few years ago. Your comment “You all are from Miami, Florida never experience anything like this and it is a SHAME you all had to come to the island where I was born to be treated like that. I feel so bad and shame like wise.” Seems a bit untruthfully told. Miami has a homicide, rape and serious crime rate problem. It seems that Miami has even pass New York in homicides alone. When was the last time you ever flicked the local Florida news with no mention of rapes or murders? Every where you go in life you will find bad apples. There is a slightly significant chance of you getting mugged, car jacked or shot by just shopping for school clothes than getting jacked in the streets of Dominica. I’m horrified by the news here. Yet these crime doers can’t be reflected on all of the Dominicans. I have never met so many nice people in my life. I moved here 5 years ago and loving it. Right now I’m in New York on business will be back in Dominica in a week. Just today I encountered a pick-pocketer in the subway an undercover cop on the train arrested. This in a more develop city/country than Dominica. Should I never come back to the US because of these stupid goons? Are all New Yorkers like this? Are all Americans murderous blood thirsty rapist? Hell no! I’m American and know better. You can’t put down an entire place over stupid ignorant ppl choices. The woman seems to understand this but now you. You are trying persuade them to not return to the island like it is some sort of Death island. You have a better chance of being killed in the states I say.

    • warma
      August 6, 2011

How ignorant can you be? You curse the country where you were born? Incidents of criminality amongst a fraction of the populace notwithstanding, how dare you paint the entire country as lawless? You do realize that crime exists everywhere, do you? The Florida that you love so much over your country of birth, is it devoid of crime? Why don’t you go play around in Liberty City, for example, let’s see how long you and your family will last before being a victim of serious crime. This crime has touched ALL Dominicans; we’re all in pain for Rick, Alicia and Joe, we all say prayers for them – yet you say “You all are from Miami, Florida never experience anything like this and it is a SHAME you all had to come to the island where I was born to be treated like that. I feel so bad and shame like wise” -. You disgust me and I am sure a whole lot of Dominicans. It’s best you conceal your identity because you will never have peace amongst Dominicans, at home and abroad, should you be brave and reveal who you are. I dare you to do so. You’re probably one of those who sing the country’s praises when in the midst of true patriots but simultaneously curse these very patriots for loving their homeland. People spit on people like you; it would serve you well to remember that.

By the way, go work on your vocabulary. Spend some time on the proper use of words and their correct spelling.

Liar FLORIDA. Well depending on one’s understanding of your statement you may be correct, hopefully you are implying that the crimes in Florida are worst or cannot be compared to that of Dominica. Perhaps you live in total ignorance of your surroundings hence you are not aware of the many deaths occuring in Miami Florida. If I must remind you of the recent horrific death caused by a 17 year old who hammered his parents to death. Least you forgot the very popular case of Casey Anthony who caused the death of her 2 year old, yeah 2 year old and threw her away like trash in garbage bags.

Thank God that Rick and Alicia are alive and my sympathies are with them. Sad that they had to endure this on our beautiful Island as the rightly said and sad that the other man died.

I say shame on you for making such posting, guess you did not read what Alicia said and she is not Dominican. I understand her anger and frustration but you I am disgusted by you as you post comments that are detrimental to you birth place. Pay attention to your surroundings, read the news, be informed and when you make a decision to post in the future be sure to make a informed decision. 2. Poor Dominicans may never recover from “a growing trend of criminality on the island”
