Dominica is one of the nominees in USA Today’s Reader’s Choice Contest, “Best Caribbean Island”  and you can vote to make it take the top spot.

The island is among twenty Caribbean destinations chosen by experts and the winner will be named Best Caribbean Island.

Here is the description provided by USA Today of Dominica: “Mountainous Dominica is covered by almost two-thirds of its original rain forest. It offers superb short and long hikes, including a trek to one of the world’s largest boiling lakes. Visitors to Dominica discover the Caribbean’s principal surviving group of Carib Indians. Resident sperm whales add surprise to the offshore scenery while divers explore the steep walls and volcanic vents that make Dominica diving unique.”

Other destinations on the list are Barbados, Anguilla, Bonaire, Curacao, Great Abaco, Jamaica, St. Lucia, among others.

Voting is live until January 6 and the winner will be revealed on January 8.

as a 63 year-old man from Martinique who has visited Dominica several times ,i think that this island is really beautiful! It’s really the nature island ,quite different from Martinique .When you go there ,you shouldn’t expect to find modern buildings , like in the U.S.A , i don’t think that tourists come over to Dominica to see things they can see in their own country .They want to see unspoilt places which are not defaced by concrete !That’s why Dominica should be picked up as the best nature – island !

I support what sweetness is saying. Dominica cannot be compared to a lot of Caribbean islands destinations. Dominica has a lot of eco tourism sites, how many foreigners you have met who says they want to go to the Caribbean to hike. The majority of persons will say they are going to the Caribbean to be on the beach. Dominicans lets not be fooled. If Dominica such a hot commodity don’t u think we would have had thousands of overnight tourist? Don’t you believe that the cruise industry would make daily stops in Dominica, in and out of season. We claim oh we have waterfalls. Can you imagine showing a Canadian trafalgar falls… their first comment would be like you call that a water fall! We show an American tourist the botanical gardens, the first comment will be my community park has more to offer. I cannot support anyone in their quest ti claim Dominica is the best Caribbean island.

Well, a beautiful piece of nature it is. Let’s just be frank about the fact that aside from the natural beauty, throw in the people and the lack of any discipline enough to bring this country even a sliver out of third world category, the island leaves much to be desired compared to its neighbors. I love and miss my island but a part of me gets embarrassed by the fact that all we really can offer is hiking trails and mountains. It isn’t the best and we can be biased as citizens but if I as a citizen cannot live and survive there , then what makes it the best? I am not hating on my lovely land but being the best means that we have to look beyond the superficial and dig deep into the issues plaguing the island for years with hardly any let up. And no yelling at me please I am entitled to speak up and be honest with people. I think there is work to be done to reach the “Best” level. And a vote does not make it so.

What have you done or are doing to make the changes you want to see in Dominica?? Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for you country!!! The island is simply beautiful but alas, the same cannot be said of your malicious and destructive words. Now get off your soapbox and get busy to make a difference!!

I have met many people the world over in my line of work and in other circumstances, but, I have never heard anyone of them ill speak their country like Dominicans do . Guys, if you put down your country, you are putting down yourselves.
Each person is a representation of their country . It takes all sots of people to make up a country so please have better self esteem when presenting Dominica to the world . Dominica is a lot better than many other countries so lets promote it instead of destroying it and our reputation.

I don’t see why Dominica should not be nominated. Our County is absolutely breathtaking. The contest is not about whether our island is the most developed, or has the best infrastructure. It is about our beauty and the experience of our nature…

I am a Dominica expatriate. First of all, based on what criteria? Internally Dominica has many problems – governmental, economical and moral.
I would not vote for Dominica as the best place to visit, because the last time I visited, people thought I was a foreigner (many years abroad has modified my speech pattern). I encountered a lot of inflated pricing and outright dishonesty. I found Dominicans greedy and grasping. It has been 14 years and I have not returned. I miss the natural beauty of the island but the more I hear about the character of the people, the less inclined I am to return. I hear from friends who witness little children cussing up adults, I read about drugs and prostitution proliferating; I see that the partisan style of government is still alive and well, and true intellectual discussion is at an all time low.
I love the land, but the people have changed and not for the better.

Mr I don’t know where you are, but I am also leaving abroad in the UK, and for all what you say, it’s no better in the UK. The problems of morality is worldwide not confined to DA. The question is not about morality, manners or customer service. It’s about natural beauty. I repeat again, too often people make comments on news stories that do not relate in any form to the actual stories.

They don’t want to hear none of that. Them people living in denial because for some of them this is all they have. Doesn’t matter either way. No amount of voting by the few people who have access to computers in our backwards country will be able to beat out the vast number of tourists who have visited islands including ours and will be objective in their vote (no patriotic bias).

I don’t think so. Why didn’t they take public safety in account? It’s like making Pope Francis “person of the year.” All because he seem to be going light and easy on gays and lesbians. Give me a break…Our World is done.

    • SD
      December 12, 2013

And people ask why Dominica not advancing? How can it when we have mindsets like this? What does public safety have to do with the beauty of a place? What foolishness people on this website talk? This is a good website for sources of news for people abroad but the sheer volume of rubbish people talk on here is really mind boggling.

      • 4CARS
        December 13, 2013

Beauty comes from deep within, not from the surface. With all these rocky hills and precipice we have, a few un-kept beaches – where is that “beauty” all you fussing about? tell me! You people have not been elsewhere in the Caribbean.

i am well travelled and as a Dominican i am being objective. Dominica does not deserve to be nominated. If all the 71k people voted and decieved the world what would visited think of the other caribbean island. lets be fair Dominicans and not be deceiptful.

      December 12, 2013

So true. You are “well traveled” so you would know.

    • SD
      December 12, 2013

Well traveled perhaps but not well enlightened. The beauty of a place is not due to it’s infrastructure or development or rich architecture (although it contributes)but it’s natural beauty. Sure there are other beautiful places in the world. But for unspoiled natural beauty to argue against it both futile and unpatriotic.

      • john
        December 13, 2013

I don’t think natural beauty alone will do it.
How could visitors come and enjoy our natural
wonders when you have someone grabing a strangers crouch because they refused him a drink.
I visit Dominica very often;but people are very
offensive, crude, and loud they have no respect
and are always looking to bring someone down to
the lowest denominator, there are a large group of
people who have no regards for life in their pursuit of money. People’s dwellings have become
prison cells. All these dysfunction has defaced
        the natural beauty of Dominica.
