Name the river

Thanks to DNO readers who participated in the latest guessing game – most of you got it right, so congratulations.

It is indeed a photo of the Roseau River, taken from the media location at the Windsor Park Stadium.

Look out for a more difficult guessing game this coming weekend – the focus will be on another spot in the capital.

While Kalinago people originally called the region Sairi, French woodcutters named the city Roseau, in the 18th century. Roseau (reed) is the name of the river, the town

Phragmites, the Common reed, is a large perennial grass found in wetlands…

These are the same plants in the picture.

roseau river next to the stadium

  48. ROSEAU VALLEY
    July 13, 2012

This river originates from the heights of the ROSEAU VALLEY, from the waters of the Boeri and Fresh Water lakes in the Laudat area, flowing through the scenic and natural environment of the Roseau Valley, through Copthall, between Elmshall and Bath Estate and ending its journey under the new China-Dominica Friendship bridge next to the Roseau Market. Without a doubt this is the Longest River in Dominica- the Roseau (Valley) River.

    • Voice From The North
      July 13, 2012

Roseau River is not the longest river in Dominica. Layou River is.

      • possy
        July 13, 2012

You both wrong….Indian River is Longest…layoo was largest but with disaster..not so sure anymore

      • ROSEAU VALLEY
        July 13, 2012

You may be correct but I decided to go with the old geography that was taught 30-40 years ago. Dominica has 365 rivers, the Longest River- the Roseau River, Largest River -the Layou River and theDeepest River –the Indian River.

Over the years things have changed Layou has been named the Largest and Longest River. The truth be said, perhaps we do not have 365 rivers anymore. Some of our rivers are or have dried up from indiscriminate deforestation and now we have seasonal streams that we call rivers. Similarly, when one says Layou is the largest river in Dominica that measurement is focused on the lower part/estuary of the river and not the entire length of the river.

But—point well taken. This picture was still that of the section of the Roseau River in the breathtaking and picturesque ROSEAU VALLEY, area of Dominica, whether or not the Roseau River is officially the longest river in Dominica. Have a nice weekend…..We are just having fun!
