WEEKEND FUN UPDATE: Name this contraption

Thanks to all who participated in our last edition of Weekend Fun.

Many of you did get it right.

The contraption is known as a karlauge and is used for trapping birds and other wildlife games.

It was used widely in rural areas in the past and is rarely seen today.

…but bwa caway (square wood) should be used instead if those round sticks…

Yes my brother. Now I hear from somebody who know about karloj. Unless you make a karloj with bwa caway, you do make karloj yet.

My old man showed me how to make the zatwap tootwelll. We would set that in Buck and Lolo. We always would put those yellow seeds from the cocklet tree as bait for those tootwel. Something is different about this one though; every row would be tied starting from the bottom up to the top and the sticks were dug in like how log cabins are done so that there is less space.

I agree they wanted to make something from the past but magway sah. One piece of wire from side to side could ever hold a calloge? The calloge have to be able to stand on a piece of wood until the bird trip on the rope. If a bird trip that it just decallaying!! Please find someone to make a proper calloge!!

As a matter of fact, launch a calloge making competition. I agree for someone to take my idea. I will send US50.00 for prize money.

That is a Karloge used to trap doves. They were very common in areas like Pte. Soufriere, San Sauveur, Good Hope and C/Bruce areas back in the day when we had no BB and pellet guns for hunting birds.

    Assertive, NOT Agressive!.

That looks like trap to catch “TOOTWELL” which is a kind of ground dove (bird). But we used to use the branches of the Calabash tree which is a lighter wood.

Since this wood is more sturdy, it may be used for a different animal like a manicou.

  32. htw
    November 2, 2012

i suspect that is a manicou/agouti trap, not a bird trap. look at the size of that thing
