Dominica News Online would like to thank all readers who participated in our latest Weekend Fun.
Most of you got it right. This is indeed the belfry located in the Grand Bay Catholic Cemetery.
When the grandbay church was being constructed in the 1920’s, a tower was built attached to the church.
Then, it was realized that the sound of the bells did not travel very far so they demolished the tower and put it up on the hill so that the sound would cover the entire valley and up the hills to Tete Morne.
A national landmark would have been more appropriate.
government headquarters
DNO do you the percentage gens gwanbay who use your online news…? that one too easy man. this bell tower used to be the tallest on the island but a piece broke off during hurricane David correct me if i am wrong. It still is very functional. It is wrung at 6 am, 12MD, 6 p.m. at special church feasts… before mass, after mass, when there is a death in the community and during storm times…believe me when you dont hear it at the expected time, you know something wrong
Any way….

The “landmark” is the belfrey for the Grand Bay Roman Catholic Chucrh. This is probably the only church here on Dominica which has its belfrey as a separate building, away from the main church building itself.
I think this is the Grand bay Roman Catholic
church.
This looks a cemetary all right. Is anybody famous buried there?
We do have famous people buried there like the Honourable Pierre Charles and John Fabien
there is no one famous in death..thank God
Thats the Fresh Water Lake

Grand Bay period! Now let me congratulate DNO for helping educate Dominicans, about the various landmarks in Dominica.
I think the next landmark should be the cross that was carved from a single stone. Today it stand tall in the village of , yes I said it. Grand bay again. Please have lenox Honeychurch give a brief history of the cross.
Thanks!

The bell tower overlooking the addition to the Grand Bay cemetery. In the older part of the cemetery you will find the oldest artifact on Dominica:the cross “cut out of one living rock” by Jeanneot Rolle a freedman from Martinique. Oh Grand Bay. South is the seat of freedom, of culture, of history….
On my computer.
