WNT to host “epic and wild adventure”

wntThe Waitukubuli National Trail (WNT) will be the site of another new and exciting venture during the week of April 7th through the 11th.

In conjunction with the Nature Island Environmental Trust (NIET), the US-based organization, The One Run, will be holding a trail race which it described on its website as “an epic and wild adventure.”

The race covers more than 125 miles and includes 30,000 feet of gain.

Participants will leave from Scott’s Head in the south of Dominica and finish at the Cabrits in the northwest.

Along the way, they will be crossing 13 different segments of the Trail and be accommodated along the way at the Eggleston Retreat House, the Barana Aute in the Kalinago Territory and the Syndicate Parrot Reserve.

“NIET is pleased to be working with an experienced trail race organizer that is bringing its expertise in organising ultra trail races internationally to Dominica,” Race Director- Dominica, Clement Rabess said. “Through its network, The One Run, will be introducing a new set of visitors to the Nature Island. If all goes well with this inaugural race, we expect to see the race run again next year with even more participants.”

NIET sees this new partnership with the One Run as another step forward in its efforts to promote the National Trail and Dominica, according to Rabess.

He said NIET believes that organising trail events of this kind will also encourage more Dominicans to enjoy the Trail.

NIET’s long-term trail project has three objectives:
1. To establish regular trail events, leading to a world class international competitive trail crossing event that takes place annually on the Waitukubuli National Trail;
2. To provide income earning opportunities to Dominican communities for providing services in support of the Trail events; and
3. To create in Dominica a national focus on trail sports similar to the one in Jamaica that has resulted in a national enthusiasm for and achievement in sprint running.

    So is this another event which is happening at the same time this week with the Nature Island Challenge hosted by DDA? Hope they both get sufficient coverage and give the island much needed visibility for hiking and adventure.

    Certainly a good idea. Just hope someone has actually walked the trail beforehand and made repairs to the areas which were falling into disrepair.
