The Yes We Care program will continue in 2012, despite claims that the Dominica government may be unable to sustain it.
We cannot abandon our parents and grandparents, we have to care for them in the same way they cared for us, according to Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit.
The program provides personal care and attention to elderly people, particularly those who are alone, or whose family is unable to provide for them because of poverty, sickness or unemployment.
“While it is not the government’s responsibility to go into somebody’s home and clean their home for them, we as family and friends must recognize that we have a part to play in caring for the elderly,” Skerrit pointed out.
When government launched Yes We Care in 2009, the Prime Minister described it as a ‘bold undertaking’ at a time when countries were looking to cut spending because of global economic problems.
The Ministry of Community Development has implemented the program together with non-government organizations.
