The Youth Arm of the Dominica Cancer Society has donated $600 to a child whose parent was diagnosed with cancer to assist in easing the burden the diagnosis has brought on the family.
At a ceremony held at the Wellness Centre Cancer House in Goodwill on Wednesday, a cheque was presented to cancer survivor, Sharon Edmund for her 12- year-old daughter Kelly-Ann Jean Jacques to assist with school supplies in the new academic year.
“We decided to raise funds to contribute to send one child back to school whose parent has been diagnosed with cancer,” Secretary of the Dominica Cancer Society Youth Arm, Erlyne Joseph said. “We all understand that cancer treatment is expensive, so we the youth arm figured out that we could help reduce the strain on the family by help giving them a helping hand with the back to school expenses.”
According to Joseph, the youth arm of the society held monthly cake sales to help raise money.
“We were able to raise $500 and at the last minute we received an additional $100 from an anonymous source,” she noted.
Joseph encouraged young people to help in the fight of cancer.
Edmund thanked the Cancer Society for the donation which she said will help in assisting her daughter.
Jean Jacques will attend the St Martin Secondary School.
Last year the youth arm of the society presented donations to a young boy from Morne Prosper who lost his mother to cancer.
The Youth Arm of the Dominica Cancer Society was formed two years ago when the St Theresa’s House of the Convent High School hosted a breast cancer awareness activity.
Nobody knows the fear and inconvenience of cancer until it strikes them or a family member. It is hard to imagine anything as devastating. It is difficult to even talk about. (Know – been there.)
I congratulate Erlyne Joseph and The Youth Arm of the Dominican Cancer Society for the excellent work they are doing. This is a group of Dominica’s finest young people making a difference – such a difference – giving practical help where it is needed.
I also express my admiration for the older adults who encouraged you to undertake such a work and to those who gave. WOW This is a work worth supporting. God bless you all. I am praying that God’s blessing will also be upon Sharon Edmund and her daughter Kelly-Ann Jean Jacques.
Remember Kelly, God’s eye is on the sparrow and HE watches over you!
Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. Evangelist.
