Dominica State College Lecturer, Dr. Schuyler Esprit, has called on the Girl Guides Association of Dominica to develop new ways of functioning in a changing environment.
She made that remark while delivering the feature address at the recently-held Annual General Meeting of that association.
“If we can accept that the definition of the world itself has changed and it has gotten smaller, closer and more competitive than ever before, what should our focus and message be in order to lead our girls to the front of the line in the best possible ways?” She asked. “Our definition in guiding them must include leading by example.”
According to Dr. Esprit, this applies to technology.
“We must not be so afraid of it or so quick to dismiss it as a distraction or a waste of time in money,” She warned. “We must meet our young people where they are and educate ourselves on what positive elements of those technologies we can tap into and bring to our programming.”
Dr. Esprit added that young women must be reminded that leading is not only about sharing talents and gifts, but it also about protecting and preserving the best part of themselves so that they can continue to experience personal growth that will make them want to continue making genuine contributions to their communities.
“Our definition of guiding has to always include very practical attributes of leadership,” she advised.
The DSC lecturer noted that in order to continue connecting the young people of Dominica to the world through guiding, “we have to accept one major truth.”
“Change is inevitable,” Dr. Esprit noted. “We must accept that change can be good for all of us.”
She continued, “I would like to see more young women like me given opportunities to speak in forums…”
Stupes…
It is obvious that you miss the point the Doctor was making…she never said that the girl guides should abandon their customs but rather they she take advantage of the changes that are happening in the world….back in the days technology was not available to us and we are afraid of what we do not know …..like she said , change is inevitable. if we do not encourage the youth to accept change, they will be the ones left behind while the rest of the world will continue to leave us in their rear view mirrors.so let us encourage the youth to embrace the good that technology have to offer and at the same time keeping our traditions intact…with innovation comes progress…let us continue to reinvent the wheel.
I listened to this speech on the radio and the message was so cliche. The speaker did not even bother to take her time to read. What was the rush?
I learnt how to sweep, make caco tea, wash dishes, wash and iron my first St. Martin School blouse, tie knots, build camp fires etc. and got several badges for each chore I performed at home.
Isn’t is overly evident that our girls are sufficiently bombarded with computers and technology? What more are they missing to ‘learn’ and to be ‘exposed’ to it? Every aspect of children’s life ought not be consumed by technology.
Absolutely nothing needs to changed with the Girl Guides, Rainbow or Brownie movements.
They teach those little finer things of life that make girls ladies and this is why parents send their girls there. That speech gets a big fat thumbs down from me, sounds recycled and a spit in the face if one were to understand the true meaning of the movement.
100% support this reply.
“I learnt how to sweep, make caco tea, wash dishes, wash and iron my first St. Martin School blouse, tie knots, build camp fires etc. and got several badges for each chore I performed at home.”
So what?? Tell me, how exactly does that equip you in today’s world? Do you highlight those “skills” in your resume? Will they put you ahead of other applicants in the job market? I’m not sure if you’ve heard, but today there are washing machines, coffee/tea makers, dishwashers etc., so all those skills you seem to be so proud of are not essential to everyday life. Come on, we’re in 2016… people don’t raise their daughters to be housewives anymore.
Furthermore, how does the fact that like many others, she’s encouraging people to get with the times when it comes to technology, make her speech recycled? And you think her speech was rushed? She didn’t take her time to read? You clearly don’t know Schuyler, as she’s by far the most articulate and well-spoken individual in…
To add to this.. you dont read a speech.. guide should have taught u that too.. its a speech not a reading.. you only jot down major points..
