Government officially breaks ground for the rehabilitation of the Chatwell feeder road in Bellevue

The government of Dominica has officially broken ground for the rehabilitation of the Chatwell feeder road project in Bellevue Chopin amounting to over six million dollars.  The project is being funded by the European Union Development Fund. The government officials along with the media had a tour of the site before and after the ceremony.

Minister for Public Works, Hon. Fidel Grant said that this project will directly impact the lives of farmers in the area as this “ key” feeder road provides access to many farms. He said this is significant for bolstering Dominica’s agricultural sector and ensuring the resilience of the transportation network used to link farms to market.

“There are several benefits to our farmers and communities; it reduces travel time, it reduces wear and tear on farmers’ vehicles, it reduces in-transit damage to your fresh produce to name a few,” he said.

“This is not just a feeder road; it is our road to creating sustainable employment for our youth… and it is important that I point out to you that while the world is going through difficult times, we are here investing $6.3 million for farm access roads.”

Additionally, the minister said the Chatwell feeder road will serve as a crucial bypass during the construction of the Loubiere-Bagatelle rehabilitation project. The Loubiere-Bagatelle road project is funded by the government of the United Kingdom. He noted the first phase of this project from Loubiere to Grandbay includes five bridges and the much anticipated Mitchum bridge and about 12 kilometers of road.

“I have been informed that two contracts have been awarded and signed for the rehabilitation of the Chatwell feeder road. In lot 1 the contractor will undertake construction from the Pichelin end. The length of the road to be rehabilitated in lot 1 is 1.1 kilometers and the contract value of this lot is $3,354,147.50.”

He said the proposed works include a comprehensive scope from the demolition and the clearance and construction of retaining walls, culverts, and the new road pavement construction. He further stated that, similarly, in lot 2 Offshore Civil and Marine Inc will commence construction from the Bellevue Chopin end.

“The contract value of lot 2 is $2,885,749.10 and through this contract, we seek to rehabilitate 2.17 kilometers of road,”

“The scope of works for lot 2 is similar to that of  lot 1 but also includes removal and reinstallation of the existing water supply lines in accordance with the DOWASCO standards.”

Meantime Grant noted that under this program, the government has to date invested over $20 million in the rehabilitation of eight feeder roads. These road segments were rehabilitated in various parts of the island including Calibishie, Paix Bouche, Wesley, Castle Bruce,  La Plaine, and Grandbay.

“The successful completion of these roads marks [our] remarkable achievement [on] our journey towards resilience and our prosperous Dominica,” he expressed

“All in all this project promises to deliver a road that not only widens our transportation network but enhances resilience to improve drainage infrastructure and an added redundancy in the road network.”

The government anticipates the completion of the Chatwell feeder road rehabilitation within four months.

You dont need any more proof that this Government doesn’t care about agriculture. It clearly shows, that this administration priority is upside down.
Why would a government allow feederoads across the island to be in such a deplorable state, before making repairs to it? Ah! Look at the morpo road, during the by-election, in Grand Bay they send bulldozers, they were going to rehabilitate the road.
Grand Bayrians still waiting for the morpo road to be rehabilitated. Sort ki fe macaque Manger Pima 🌶.

I was just Grandbay for the breakfast fete and the road down to Pitchlin, I wonder why they don’t just add a million or $o to this project, modify the other project to include this, and make it a permanent alt or bypass for all traffic to Pitchlin? Once one for all?

In the meantime, the Imperial Highway at Antrim clings perilously to the hillside in expectation of the next heavy rainfall. Other than random asphalt patching, nothing is being done to avert a disaster waiting to happen.
