Groundbreaking for the China-funded GSS set for September; additional grant funding allocated for youth and sports development

Damaged Goodwill Secondary School

Come September 6, 2023, the government of Dominica alongside the People’s Republic of China (PRC), will officially break ground to mark the start of construction work on the Goodwill Secondary School (GSS).

According to Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, the school, which was devastated nearly six years ago during Hurricane Maria’s passage, is one of numerous elementary schools across the island that will be reconstructed by the PRC. Following the 2017 natural disaster, the Chinese government pledged to assist Dominica with school restoration, and an agreement for school reconstruction was signed in May 2020 between the Ministry of Education and the PRC.

While he acknowledges that the GSS is at the top of the list, Skerrit stated that contracts have also been signed and construction will soon begin for Thibaud Primary School, Tete Morne Primary School, the extension of Sineku Primary School, Calibishie Primary School, and the new school for Bellevue Chopin, Pichelin, and Petite Savanne students who are now at Bellevue Chopin.

In addition to the construction of the school, the prime minister also revealed that the People’s Republic of China has pledged grant support to further bolster Dominica’s development. Skerrit stressed that the timing of this contribution is noteworthy, given the global economic challenges posed by factors such as natural disasters and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

He said the government has exclusively earmarked this fund for the advancement of sports and youth development in Dominica and indicated that in the coming weeks, he will outline plans to support youth enterprise, continue efforts to advance sports and “develop the aptitude of our young people in various disciplines.”

Among the proposed projects for funding by the grant assistance from the Chinese, are the establishment of a synthetic track in Portsmouth and the creation of an indoor sports facility.

The Prime Minister thanked the PRC for their support,  and stated that “the long-standing and fruitful relationship between Dominica and China, dating back to 2004, has yielded numerous tangible benefits.”

“I can point to invaluable assistance to advance the agricultural sector, restore key infrastructure after disasters, enhance health facilities, and construct all important sports infrastructure,” he said.

“I wish to thank Ambassador Lin and the team at the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China for their continued support. I look forward to building on our already solid relations with China for the benefit of both of our peoples,” Skerrit added.

Over the past 20 years we have had a lot of groundbreaking in DA. Very few projects ever advanced beyond this stage other reached the stage of white elephants. Very very few got completed. Skerrit governance is based on propaganda but not on delivering. That’s the truth.

Dominica is full of holes where the CM broke ground for this that and everything. A few month later the holes are covered again. If only he plant some dasheen in all those holes, at least they would have saved the purpose of feeding some hungry souls.

When skerrit went to bdos on his own I think he mad a deal with Chinese intelligence. Severe diplomatic relationship with tiawan, dealer faith in one China policy and we will help you become PM and help you maintain power as long as you want. We will help you do that by rewarding you with infrastructure pillars.
Since nothing is free the Chinese want something in return. It is pretty evident as stated above it is the PRC conducting these activities not our government. Seems like we just tell them which ones to start. After 20years in office you rewarding yourself with mansions but yet to make the country economically independent. By the fruits you know a tree. Dominica so far up Chinese assets not sure it can be pulled out. Meanwhile dominicans walking around like living dead.

WTF! I agree with Life and Death. China is building and paying for everything here, and before you know it, when The Good Lord takes the kleptomaniacs that are holding office, it will be our children that they will take Dominica from. People, if you want to maintain your democracy, you need to get rid of this kleptomanic gov’t that is giving away our country.

And the assimilation of Dominica bit by bit continues. In every school they build they allegedly put in a “Confucius classroom” for indoctrination. Education is no longer about reading, writing, and arithmetic, but about propaganda and indoctrination. Wake up and smell the coffee on the pu pu platter Dominica!

Why don’t you spend your money instead building schools across Dominica and other infrastructures and stop writing nonsense on this medium? What can you contribute? Nothing. And if Linton was in power where would he have gotten the money from to rebuild schools and other infrastructures? Linton has no money of his own. He is poor like everybody else. Why don’t you all stop spewing garbage on this medium all because your party is not in power when you cannot do anything to help the country move forward. Juanita, wake up and smell the coffee. I am sick of you, Telemakak, Ibo France, Meme, Jonathan, Roger Burnette and company. It is very unhealthy reading all your nonsense.

Juanita..the very same thing came to my mind. Our cultural lineage has nothing to do with Confucius, so why are the authorities allowing this brain washing. It serves our people no benefit. It is a waste of time of our students.

Instead teach them about economics, sustainable agriculture, water conservation and the likes….

I don’t understand this government at all

Billions in CBI but we look to foreigners to sponsor our most basic infrastructure. From Hospitals to Schools, we receive “donations”, but it’s all good governance to those who have drank the red cup of blind loyalty.

Be thankful for the CBI money when you have nothing to contribute. Have you asked Linton where would he have gotten the money from to rebuild Dominica when he Linton personally is worth nothing on this earth? Stop playing partisan politics because your party is not in power.

Can you give us one example of one single project that has been completed and financed by CBI money which is for the benefit of ALL Dominicans? Please do not include Geothermal and Airport. These are mere phantasy projects and will never be completed in our lifetime. Come on I challenge you, big mouth! In the meantime allow me to give you my take where the CBI money is or could be, the new jungle bay, Gregor’s development, Alick’s white elephant, Haiden’s various accounts, Skerrits various number only accounts, Mano’s various enterprises, some real estate in Morne Daniel, etc. etc. The homes given to Labour supporters are used to launder some of the CBI proceeds and at the same time are ideal as election presents, a double whammy if you like. Now let me have YOUR take…

Didn’t Skerrit tell us that it was financed by the state of Mexico. God forbid, was he perhaps lying? Subsequently didn’t Mexico refuse to pay all the money because of bidding irregularities? Could it be that once again you served up Bulls..t? Man get out of here. Once again you are clutching on straws.

I’m still waiting for an answer, Dip Stick. Did I render you speechless? During my lifetime I’ve dealt with much bigger crooks than you. Lesson for you to learn, don’t make statements that you can’t proof and don’t argue with people that are out of your league. In each of these instances you make yourself look like a fool. But hey, you do that anyway on a daily basis on this forum. Better luck next time.

Same China plans that they had said the ground wasnt big enough for the school they had drawn plans for? Same China plans the dont take into consideration the climate and location (directly on the coast) of the school? Same China plans the never went to any sort of tender process? This country boy. I dont know. Dont we have local construction firms anymore? I not talking about the average contractor, i mean qualified capable construction firms.

Well, Randy, first that school is not located in a bouzhwa community. So, its population will comprise mostly malayway. Secondly, I heard it will have a strong tech voc component. So, everyone, including Danny, Lenny, and Spaggs, can go there to learn a trade and then make something of their lives if they wish. Thirdly, more teachers will be employed. Fourthly, during construction, many Dominicans will benefit through jobs or services (like those snackettes and bars nearby.

Now, did you ask “whom the government works for?”
