Health Minister expresses concern over country’s high prostate cancer mortality rate at ‘Walk of Hope’

Health Minister Cassanni Laville has said that Dominica’s prostate cancer mortality rates remain high in comparison to many of the islands and other countries in the sub-region, and this is of grave concern. His comment came while addressing the closing ceremony of the ‘Walk of Hope for Cancer Care’ held at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium on the weekend.

“Permit me to particularly reference the grave situation that we are suffering in the area of prostate cancer as it appears to be getting worse, sadly and it should not be so,” he said. “Unfortunately Dominica’s prostate cancer mortality rates remain high in comparison to many of the islands and the other countries in the sub-region.”

He continued, “This is a matter of tremendous concern and I firmly believe that we must act immediately to deal with this tremendous challenge that we are being faced with.

He added, “If we can reduce the mortality rates of prostate cancer by a 1/3 we can ensure that cancer-related deaths are no longer among the top 10 causes of death in our beloved Dominica.”

According to Laville, achieving this would be a monumental accomplishment that all should strive for. Meanwhile, President of the Dominica Cancer Society Yvonne Alexander has called on the public to take responsibility for their health.

“We are still very concerned about the numerous individuals who are diagnosed late and who succumb,” she said. “There are still many individuals who are affected by Cancer who still rely on us and the work that we do. The mobilizing of financial resources to assist them in paying for treatment.”

She encouraged those who may be diagnosed with cancer to come to the Dominica Cancer Society.

“Please help us, tell those who are diagnosed please do not stay home with a diagnosis of Cancer,” Alexander encouraged. “Come to the Dominica Cancer Society, reach out to one of our members. We are here to support you and assist.”

She also encouraged the general public to get screened.

“Early intervention saves lives,” Alexander stated.

“— Dominica’s prostate cancer mortality rates remain high in comparison to many of the islands and other countries in the sub-region —”
The first question is, WHY are the death rates are so high? Is it due to late diagnosis? Is it lack of effective treatment? Is it prohibitively high treatment costs? Is it lack of knowledge of the disease itself? Is it due to men’s fear of the hated digital test? How can the situation be rectified if the causes are not fully understood?
In the meantime, what do men do to reduce their chances of death?

Having waited about 3 months to see a urologist at the DCFH this week, I received a phone call informing me that the urologist is not available and will not be able to see one until March 2024 . So if someone knows a urologist anywhere on the island please let me know.

Let us just say I am not a practicing medical doctor, nevertheless, one who majored in Health Science. To become a medical doctor one must major in Health science.
I did not stay long enough to graduate; I dropped out before I could graduate!
And trust me it was not because I couldn’t pay my tuition, it all boiled down to my health issues, and burnout.
You perhaps read on DNO I’ve had three heart surgeries!
In any event if you believe any medical information I submit on DNO is false, you had better consult with someone in medicine perhaps your doctor if you have one to see if I am only farting from my mouth: any thing I write in regards to medicine are all textbook material, out of the textbooks I used in school.
Believe it when I say to some scumbags calling me out of my name I can save their life I mean it.
One night I was at a place where someone drank something poisonous: before it took effect I suggested what to’ they laughed and called the poison center, which told as…

Yes, let me be a jacka..!
I am however, happy to be a rich and happy ole Jackass who doesn’t have to be a lapdog and or a Roosevelt Skerritt yard foul kissing up for my survival.
I am retired, but if I desire I can return to medical school and complete my medical degree.
      Can you do that scker?
I doubt it, judging from the crap you write, I know you have not been to secondary school never mind college or university. One time you heard someone said they were in the military, conveniently the next day you wrote “I am military.” Remember nobody asked you about your profession. But you see a lair must exposed themselves, especially when they are a compulsory lairs!
You sit your behind in Dominica sucking Roosevelt salt he sprinkle in dirt for you to lick making believe you live in Canada or America, unable to say where.
I can tell you I live and reside in more than one place in California, besides Los Angeles, there are Dominicans who visit me!
      From California to Canada people…

Meanwhile we continue to ignore that cannabis has been recognised as a viable treatment option for early stage cancer detection. I am begining to believe that people the the cancer society dont want to cure cancer. The longer its around the more funding they can get. the more doctors can charge for treatments and medication.

” Jonathan,Francisco and Zandoli are prodigal sons.”

Yes, indeed; but I bet you anything that we are much better informed about what is going on in Dominica; and the reason we are better informed than you is that all you can see is the face of the master thief, and the father of corruption; I will not name the master thief, because if I do that corrupted thief might haunt me down and string me up oui!
      Hahahahahahahahahahahahahha!
If in fact there is a urologists in the hospital in Dominica, and an unimaginable amount of men are coming down dying from prostate cancer, that means he/she are not doing their job!
In the first prior to a patient been treated: based on the symptoms; blood should be drawn, and analyzed, any good doctor knows unless a patients shows up with broken bones, or lacerations over their body, the alternative is blood analysis. and so, in the blood work they would check PSA, and if the man has prostate cancer, treatment should get started.

I think we are missing the point. The Minister is stating an important point but you people are putting politics at the forefront.Prostate cancer has been around for a long long time but us men are not heeding the warnings. When you detractors come up with criticism of the message and do not take heed later will be too late. Stop the idle talk and go ahead and encourage the males to check themselves, early intervention saves lives. Take heed all you males and reject the negative comments of the few detractors

@Survivor, don’t you understand what you read? The minister is being criticized for not advocating for men to go and get screened and for other things to be done. Also you say that the men to check themselves. I know that women as an example are encouraged to do self examination, check themselves in addition to going to a clinician to be checked for breast cancer possible symptoms. Are you now advocating for men to check themselves by self examination for signs of prostate cancer? If yes what is your game changing procedure? There isn’t any prescribed method for what you are advocating for. The minister has teams of people to advise him on the matter at hand yet he comes up with an empty political talk telling us how bad things are, yet can’t give any ideas and point the way forward. His job isn’t only to be a bearer of bad news but to offer paths for the way forward. He’s the person in the government responsible for health and this is a major health problem.

This is very shameful. I consider this as malpractice to the nth degree. I learnt as a very young child that a stitch in time saves nine. This Square peg in a round hole minister of health didn’t exhort men to go and get screened so the disease can be diagnosed early and treated which would greatly reduce the incidents and subsequent deaths from prostrate cancer. Healthcare in Dominica in the hands of this minister is in bad shape. Also why doesn’t he seek international help to determine what is causing the high incidence of the disease with a view to mitigation. What about setting up a support group for men with prostrate cancer so the disease can be discussed among victims and help dissemination of helpful information. The cabal believes that giving fancy long and complicated names to ministries will solve the problems and make them more efficient. Hogwash.

You cunning devil, what is wrong with asking the name of who the hell is the urologist!
In a modern country such as the United States any and all practitioners of medicine name are public information.
If I need see a doctor: general practitioner, or Specialist all I have to do is simple get on my IPhone or any of my PC’s and assuming I want the service of urologist; all I have to do is go into search and write ‘urologist in Loos Angeles.” As long as they are licensed by the state, and listed, their names and office address will pop up.
Stay in Dominica and do a search as I said see what happens.
A doctor is not a god, they are not God, medicine is simply their profession, if people don’t visit they’re only doctors in name. Only in Dominica these so called doctors walked with their nose in sky believing they are better than them.
Just as you clown are talking as if this China man doctor is sacred!

Health Minister Cassanni Laville has said that Dominica’s prostate cancer mortality rates remain high in comparison to many of the islands and other countries in the sub-region, and this is of grave concern.
So tell us Hon. Cassanni Laville what is the cause of this? The French has done their research in Guadeloupe and Martinique and linked theirs to the high use of pesticides which has over the years ended up in their water supply. Could Dominica water be contaminated by overuse of Gramaxone scientifically know as Paraquat?
Health Minister Cassanni Laville here are some facts for you to look at https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19650582/ and also The Caribbean islands poisoned by a carcinogenic pesticide https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/stories-54992051
Your job is to tell us what is causing this increase in prostate cancer in Dominica and what is the solution. But apart from highlighting the issue you have given no proposed solution or exploration of the problem towards finding the cause.

In typical DLP fashion, Cassanni makes his speech and moves on and nothing happens.
I must have said it a thousand times, our people love making speeches and doing obsoletely nothing.
How is that speech going to assist anyone who is suffering from cancer of any type?
What campaign is there to raise awareness about early screening to establish a baseline for comparing PSA tests later?
Where is the campaign to encourage people to visit their doctors for annual checks to determine if they are diabetic or have high blood pressure or high cholesterol or to visit the dentist before their teeth are too far gone to save them?

This might be asking too much from a bunch of guys who are only in it for themselves.

These speeches by themselves will accomplish absolutely nothing if they are not backed up by real sustained action.

Another thing: why doesn’t the ministry of health delve into why the rate of prostate cancer and its mortality so much higher in Dominica than elsewhere in the region?
Perhaps, if we knew the why, we could take steps to reverse the trend. But I guess that requires too much thinking and actual work.

I often wonder if these guys do and planning. From what I have seen, they just react to the latest fire that they ignited.

I think I need to complete the information I decimated regarding PSA!
PSA stands for prostate-specific antigen, a protein produced by the prostate gland. PSA levels can indicate the risk of prostate cancer, but there is no definitive normal range for any man.  However, some general guidelines are:
0 to 4 ng/mL: safe for most men, but other risk factors should be considered
4 to 10 ng/mL: slightly elevated, with a 25% chance of prostate cancer
10 to 20 ng/mL: moderately elevated, with a higher chance of prostate cancer
20 ng/mL and above: highly elevated, with a very high chance of prostate cancer
I think 10-20 was omitted when first submitted.

In Dominica, everything is a show; the things to be marching about, you all are happy about it: i.e; the march should be abut getting Roosevelt and all the thieves out of Dominica politics.
In the first place women do not have prostate, so it is a joke for the march, if I saw a hand full of men marching that would be impressive:
Every man at lease over forty ( 40) years old should take the PSA test which is a blood test used primarily to screen for prostate cancer. The test measures the amount of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in your blood. PSA is a protein produced by both cancerous and noncancerous tissue.

Has the health minister mentioned or warn people concerning the KFC menu? He is the “health minister” and he should start educating people about the oils and the other carcinogenic ingredients that is used in the artificial chicken 🐔 which has a high potential for several types of cancers. As far as I can recall, there are 50 different types of cancers. So you could walk to the Moon and back, unless you walk past the KFC without eating this junk you are not ready to reduce the risk of this disease. Unfortunately, your minister of health wants to keep his job; so his not going to mention any of these three letters to you. They are wicked hypocrites. Also, that local smoked meat 🍖 they selling is a deadly high carcinogenic (cancer causing) meat. Stay away from that smoke meat. Lastly, the healthiest fish 🐟 you could eat is cou-leew and anything smaller. Omega 3 is found in these smaller fishes like Sardines. You don’t have to pay me for the information. It is one thing for someone to pretend they know about certain issues, and because they have an opportunity to write in a forum, they spew these nonsense, to impress those who are gullible, and believe every bit of nonsensical crap they read.

This fake person without a name does not know anything about cancer, the cause or anything! Anyone can get cancer; either by hereditary, or other means, what one eat may have very little to do with it.
You see every human alive regardless of ethnicity are born with cancer cells in their body, medical science has not yet discovered why it grows in some people: So here is an easy way to view it: Metastatic cancer is is cancer that has spread from parts of the body where it started (I would suggest in the tissue people are born with).
When cancer cells break away from a tumor they can travel to parts of the body through bloodstream, or the lymph system.
All of the bull you wrote is simple bull, no source of information to support that!
