Registration is officially open for this year’s 2nd annual ‘Walk & Smile’ fitness initiative, a collaborative venture between Kairi FM, the Ministry of Health and the Waitukubuli National Trail Project and is intended to promote healthier lifestyles.
The event is scheduled for Oct. 10, 2010. Registration can be done any time at Kairi FM offices: 8 am to 4 p.m. Mondays to Fridays and 9 am to 1 pm on Saturdays.
Speaking at yesterday morning’s launch, Heston Charles, sales and marketing representative at Kairi FM said this year participants will have their adventurous sides ignited through exercise and “a fascinating discovery of the new trail to Valley of Desolation through Morne Prosper”.
“This event has already received a high level of interest,” the radio station representative said.
The National Bank of Dominica is the headline sponsor of what is likely to be considered one of the biggest physical activities in the island. The bank handed over $2,000 in sponsorship funds to the event’s organizers.
“The National Bank of Dominica will participate in an even bigger way this year than we did last year,” said bank representative Amanda Scotland.
The activity, which is also intended to create more awareness of the new trail to the Valley of Desolation, will commence from7: 30 am from the Morne Prosper Primary School. Registration costs $25 and participants will be provided with an official event T-shirt.
Part of the proceeds from the walk will be donated to the Cancer Society.
The event was endorsed by the Discover Dominica Authority, which called for continued promotion of the National Trail, and the Minster of Tourism Ian Douglas who lauded the efforts “on behalf of Cabinet” and encouraged the population to take full advantage of the opportunity to explore the beauty of their island.
Also present at the launch was Health Promotions Officer in the Ministry of Health, Anthelia James.
althought this is a great initiative in terms of heath and fitness, we need to seriously the road situation in dominica in order to make them safer for pedestrians. If we want to promote this seriously, we need to make the facilites to enjoy this initiative to the fullest available. In short, i dont want to be exercising/ walking and having to worry about being hit by vehicles because there are no sidewalks, or the sidewalks are used for parking…causing me to walk in the road. Minister of Public Works….we need these issues addressed, not just for locals…but for visitors alike who are’nt just health conscious but who may just want to walk around our “lovely” city.
