“Small bite, big threats” is the theme of a continuing campaign by the Castle Bruce Health Team (CBHT) to combat the Chikungunya virus.

The team conducted a comprehensive community session with a view to take the discussion on Chikungunya to the streets and in so doing put Chikungunya on the chopping block.

The team, lead by Environment Health Officer, Jermal Mingo of the CBHT, collaborated with the rest of the Environmental Health Team, Nation Pest and Termite Control, the district schools and the Castle Bruce Village Council.

Teachers and students from the San Sauveur, Mahaut River and Castle Bruce Primary School were addressed by District Medical Officer, Dr Velda Wade, EHO Mingo, Chair Person of the Castle Bruce Village Council, Angelina Gasper, and EHO Clara Charles who called on all present to help in the prevention of Chikungunya.

Prevention was high on agenda as reflected in a presentation by Dr Wade who talked about the ills of the long term effects of the Chikungunya Virus.

During the chronic stage of the illness, clients suffer with intermittent mild to moderate joint pains, swelling of joints of the upper and lower limbs among others, Dr. Wade said.

Concern was raised about the absenteeism from school and work due to Chikungunya and it was pointed out that each person needs to take personal responsibility to do what is necessary to prevent Chikungunya.

There were interactive sessions conducted by Mingo and his team through easy to learn demonstrations about the Aedes Aegypti Mosquito, which spreads the Chikungunya Virus and how these mosquitoes can be controlled.

Mingo stressed that keeping the environment clean will not only stop the breeding of mosquitoes but help to control other vectors like, cockroaches, rats and flies which can spread other diseases.

Organizers say the session met it goals as at the end, the students could answer all the questions directed at them by some facilitators including Nurse Portia Burton and Lenny Thomas.

The students also successfully completed educational games and learned that the vectors can be controlled by mechanical, biological and chemical measures and were eager to go back home and implement these measures.

Blood pressure, Blood Sugar and Body Mass Index checks were conducted by Nurses Shanon Seraphine and Asha Peltier.

All present were treated with wholesome snacks which included fresh fruits, all sponsored by community persons and businesses such as United brothers, Sandra and Edo’s Bakery, Editha Cornelius, Melinda Florent and Ulina George.

Great effort, Castle Bruce Health Team. This is just the beginning of greater things to come. Continue to empower and get the public on board. The fight remains a team effort with the public alongside. Only then will there be real results.

Perhaps they should send the sick patients to Dr. Sam Christian so he can give them some bush medicine parading as a cure.

They are now reporting the presence of that disease in the US. I am surprised CNN has not descended on the good doctor to interview him an his team.

Since that article, I had lost all respect for that guy.

Grand Bay Health district should follow suit and that should be extended to the entire district spanning from Petite Savanne to Pichelin.

Excellent initiative by the Castle Bruce Health Team. This is really what primary health care is about. I like the idea that sponsorship came from the community. People must own what is important to them. That is true community development. The efforts of the people combined with national, regional and international resources.
