Health officials have reported that there are more than a dozen confirmed cases of Dengue Fever on the island.

National epidemiologist in the Ministry of Health Dr. Paul Ricketts said Dengue type one is currently in circulation in the country and the Caribbean Epidemiology Centre (CAREC) confirmed that preliminary tests are positive.

“We are experiencing and increase in the number of cases of Dengue throughout the country. We had seven in the week before last and nine or 10 in the past weeks,” he said.

He said while most of the cases are being experienced in Roseau and environs, there have been reports in Portsmouth and other areas.

“Everyone needs to continue to be on the alert and try to destroy any potential breeding sites for mosquitoes. They should wear long sleeves and long pants in the evening and mornings which is when the mosquitoes tend to bite most. Use mosquitoes repellents if available and to seek medical attention if anyone is experiencing any fever, abnormal bleeding and pains in the joints,” Dr. Ricketts explained.

… I would like the authourities to shock Dominica into the truth.

The reality is that there are more persons with confirmed dengue-the LaFalaise Clinic does the test. And not only that but there are both strains of dengue here…one will give you a terrible fever and body pain, the other will literally burst blood vessels and cause you to bleed to death if you are not given treatment and your platelet count goes down too low.

Let every home take precaution and clean all the debris and garbage from around the homes, old cans and containers; old vehicles and parts, tall grasses and drains, guttering, coconut shells and natural items which hold water…etc. So many homes and public places have debrie in and around that people think dont concern them as it is not theirs…get rid of them I say. Solid waste has been doing a wonderful job going around and collecting the trash and junk…Kudos to them. And MoH has been doing a lot in terms of sensitization .

Dominicans need to be more clean-friendly, and it must begin with the very young…bus drivers need to stop sending items out of windows…the port and bus stand areas are like cess pools…This is the place EHO should be visiting to give tickets…mind you even the hospital area while sitting in the waiting room the mosquitos were playing havoc with my ankles. The landfill must be monitored also…

On another note, the pigeons that hang out in the rafters of PMH dropping poop everywhere may look cute for tourists but dangerous and unsitely as they carry stuff we dont want. What is being done about that?

Give the Dr. a break let him smile and look professional, it takes more than him to get rid of Dengue…it takes all of us, he only needs to make sure he gives honest and timely news.

You have mis understood my point. My point is that” There were already people suffering with the disease, while they were saying there were no cause for alarm. Now they are saying the number of persons who has it, they knew it all along “LADY” what they are saying now they should have said it weeks ago. If what they are saying now is not cause for alarm why did’t they say it before. No one makes Mosquitos bite any one. But , these … health officials needs to act more professional, it should not be all about politics. strike while the iron is hot. Several weeks ago Puerto Rico gave the warning with people there suffering from the Disease, Some of the same peoples that was turned away from the PMS dismissing that they did not have the disease, are some of the same health officials count now. ” Wake up lady”

Was wondering how many persons had to get sick before they come out with the truth. Persons who came on holiday even got infected. Maybe the health officials from the other countries gave them a ‘wake up call.’

“Although we recognize that there is an increase in the number of persons who are reporting to be suffering with fever and pains, there is no diagnosis with dengue cases. Three of the persons who reported with fever and pains, there samples were sent for testing and it indicated that they were screened positive for a virus but we don’t know if its dengue,” he said.

hahahaha!!!! ” we don’t know if its dengue”

    What test was that?

A few weeks a go these same health officials was saying “there was no cause of alarn” now they are singing a different song, they knew it all along while people was complaining of the symptons. When will these educated liars stop playing politics with Dominicans. Just because someone has a six grade education it does not meant that they are wise. Stop playing politics when the lives and welfare of dominicans are at stake.
