Health challenges teachers face

A trade union leader in Dominica has warned teachers who remain in the profession for several years that they could face serious health challenges, including voice loss.

“Voice loss, is something that teachers may be very cognizant of. You may not be suffering from it now, but according to statistics, many teachers suffer from it at some time,” General Secretary of the Dominica Trade Unions Bernard Nicholas told teachers at the 11th Biennial Conference of the Dominica Association of Teachers.

According to Nicholas, teachers will also suffer from Carpal tunnel syndrome-an illness caused by pressure on the median nerve — the nerve in the wrist that supplies feeling and movement to parts of the hand.

It can lead to numbness, tingling, weakness, or muscle damage in the hand and fingers, he said.

“These things are going to come because we live in an age of technology. The machines that we use, the computers, the keyboards, eventually you will find that you will get this pain in your hands that will affect you for the rest of your life,” he said.

The conference was held under the theme “Teachers, confronting the scourge of non-communicable diseases”.

u people must get serious in that country. look on the positive side. some teachers dedicate most of their lives to teaching while their own children suffer. stop thinking about all u self alone. teachers have to be doctors, nurses, counsellors, parents and yet wat do they get in return. nothing. please be considerate

yeah right..no wonder all you loading those children with project project? all you want de money and not want to teach de children, no longer teaches teach, all they want to do is give those children project upon project and those children getting frustrated and so they put there frustration on sex, drugs violence etc. all of a sudden all you talking bout lossing voice. what about de chilren,, some children doh have computer and they have to go at somebody hom and then those that are so innocent they become corrupted in the process with other children sharing porn from their pc which they never see.. and also teachers that encourage children to com at their home to do thier project having sex with them.. si not everyone that own a computer. maybe having a center with computers in every village will help curb this problem..think about our children and ot just about all you losing all you voices. shait! our inncoent children are becoming victims. hoping to see change.

Well you have seen things papa! You are sounding like a person who has serious problems.Have you ever gone to Doctor Benjamin? He can inject you in your big head to drive all your problems and MAL TAY away we. Not to pass those problems on teachers. The teachers (many) are working very hard we. I can attest to that. By the way you can always go the Red Clinic on your knees and beg PAPA SKERRIT for a computer we. Tell him ‘Daddy i will vote for you we’ and he will first of all BAY GAY YEAH and give you the computer we.
So you will start loving the teachers now we,since all your problems and MAL TAY will be over. BAR BYE! I LOVE TEACHERS !

When a child is sent home with a project is not because the teachers don’t want to teach is for parent and children to interact with each other seeing that most parents don’t.

observant you dont make any sense. who taught you at school if there were teachers maybe u wouldn’t type tht shit than again you are entitled to ur opinion. if all teachers decide they not teaching again who will teach our children i believe there should be an early retiring age for teachers.

Woe unto those of us who love the profession. I really believe we know that but seeing it in black and white brings on a whole new meaning.

As much as I respect Mr. Nicholas, I think this should have come from someone who is trained in that field, like a medical practitioner. I think we all should speak on the things we are trained or qualified to do!
