A health journal dubbed “Rosies and Thorns” has been launched to assist individuals in making wiser choices about their health.
The journal is the brain child of licensed registered nurse and certified midwife, Rosie Felix, who is also the publication’s chief editor.
Felix, who holds a master’s degree in midwifrey and lectures at the Dominica State College, said a the launching ceremony on Friday evening that she aims, through the publication, to provide the general public with relevant health information that will assist them in making informed and timely decisions and choices about their life.
She said her journal, which is being published in conjunction with her husband Rany, will expose women and their families to information which she taught her nursing students.
“I had discovered both old and new but very relevant evidence based information about natural normal child birth and medicalised birth which I wanted to share with child bearing women and their families. I also wanted to share with hem in a manner to empower them to defend themselves against unnecessary physical and physcological trauma commonly experienced during childbirth” she stated.
The publication, she pointed out, is not only for childbearing women but is also intended to meet the health education needs of the Dominican public and to complement what is already being done by the Health Promotion Unit and Health Professionals across the world.
Felix noted further that the title of the journal “Rosies and Thorns” though unusual, was deliberate, in order to draw the attention of the public to information meant to assist them in making critical decisions concerning the roses which make them blossom and the thorns which make them sick or threaten their life.
“The scope of the journal will include themes within the context of health and health care and health problems and interventions across all disciplines and settings. It shall also publish articles within the context of health professionals’ roles and responsibilities, patients, clients and family rights, responsibilities and experiences as well as health care ethics and policy” she stated.
The expected outcome of the journal, as Felix explained, is that more people will become better educated on more matters of health and more empowered to make sound decisions concerning their health.
She said it is also expected to help people better prevent and manage diseases, defend their rights to autonomy and dignified and respectful care and be more respectful and appreciative of health care providers.
Another of its functions she added, will be to serve as a medium through which health care professionals can share research findings with the general public.
Rosies and Thorns will be published quarterly and this first issue features an exclusive interview with Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) director, Dr Carissa Ettienne.
Each issue of the journal is expected to focus on men’s and children’s health as well as environmental, maternal, mental, occupational and spiritual health issues. There will also be features on health professioanals and centenarians.
Copies of the publication can be obtained at the Art Gallery on Hillsborough Street, next to the Government Headquarters.

The magazine costs oly $20.00 per copy and will be available at Everybodys Gallery …. On Hilsborough Street (At the back of the ministerial building)
No, it’s not available there. They have not got any copies in there since launching the magazine last week. And nobody seems to know when they will get the copies in. This is terrible marketing and a terrible way to start off – Just My Opinion!!
Congratulations nurse Felix, thanks for for your guidance and encouragement.
good going Nurse
Roses & Thorns? Love the name; do not forget the diet & exercise part; Put in a word search too. I love that. Put in pictures so that it will attract all genre of people. Put a little humour at the end of each article. Put a famous quote relevant to our health-mentally & physically. Make it a journal one can carry with them all over. A never put-down piece of literature. Almost like Reader’s Digest.
