Obesity high among Dominica’s urban female population – study

obeseTwo-thirds of the females in the urban population of Dominica is obese.

That’s according to the results of a study which was conducted to determine the trans fatty acid content of common processed foods among people living in Dominica’s urban areas.

The study was done by the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Caribbean Food and Nutrition Institute and the findings were made public on Friday morning.

Dominica’s Chief Medical Officer, David Johnson, said the study has shown that the amount of trans fat consumed by the Dominican public is alarming.

“The finding of trans fatty acid on selected foods that we like to consume in Dominica, clearly indicate that we are consuming a high level of these trans fatty acids which are dangerous to our health,” he pointed out.

Trans fat adds hydrogen to liquid vegetable oils to make them more solid and according to National Epidemiologist,Dr Paul Ricketts, the consumption of trans fatty acids causes increase in coronary heart disease which leads to heart attacks.

He pointed out that other illnesses associated with the consumption of trans fatty acids include Alzheimer’s disease, cancer and diabetes.

High levels of trans fatty acids can be found mainly in fired or baked food. It is also produced naturally in beef, lamb and dairy.

Johnson noted that bread produced by various bakeries across the island were tested and was proven to have too much salt.

Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) representative, Dr Audrey Morris, warned the public that trans fat in any amount is not recommended. She indicated that although these foods may contain trans fat, it was not detected in three food samples; peanut butter, raisin bun and one bread sample

101 persons participated in the study. 51.5 percetnt of the participants were female and 48.5 were male, while the majority of them were from the 35 – 44 and 45 – 55 age groups.

24.7 percent had a normal body mass index, 39.8 percent were overweight and 35. 5 percent were obese. However, Dr Morris indicated that this is not a representative sample.

Paula Trotter, Jacqueline Prevost, Marynese Titre, Dr Paul Ricketts, Renelle Aaron-Morgan and Dr Audrey Morris made up the team.

Cooking oil, margarine, pre-packaged snacks including potato chips, pre-packaged popcorn and cheese sticks, biscuits and cookies, bread, pastries and fast foods including pizza, fries and fried chicken were the main foods studied during the survey.

The study was done between 2011 and 2012.

In 2011, a World Bank-funded study revealed that Dominica has the highest obesity prevalence in the Eastern Caribbean and in 2010 the island was ranked 11 of the 20 most obese countries on earth by the World Health Organization.

It aint surprising. Ever standing in a queue at the supermarket and glance into the pushcarts? Pure koshoni! When mothers giving kids Chubby and Busta in their snack and lunch packs, what what do you expect? Everything for us Dominicans now is baked food with loads of cheese; lasagna, scalloped potatoes, Mac n cheese…these things have their time, some of us just don’t know how to consume with moderation! We are killing our own generations by the lifestyles we choose. SMH

stupes…stop deceiving yourself with that nonsense about what men go for. Persons who have slow metabolic rates are lazy, they should get active and speed up their metabolic rates. Two things that can be determined when you see a fat person, 1, that person is LAZY and 2, GREEDY.

Too much trans fat? Since before kfc every carnival i used to see those big carnival bands of huge fat women with fat spilling everywhere on the road. And in the rivers, always had huge topless women spread out on stones washing clothes. Urban what? Its not just the oil and margarine, its the huge plates of so called healthy, natural foods filled with STARCH. DASHEEN, TANIA, PLANTIAN, POTATO, SWEET POTATO, YAM, BREADFRUIT, CUSH CUSH, CASSAVA/FARINE, GREEN BANANA. When people wake up in the morning and the first thing they eating is piece of dasheen, what they expect? And when all you make your braf and put 10 pieces of food in one plate, what all you expect? i not saying to keep on eating the kfc, but those starchy foods have always had a lot to do with overweight people in DA

Not at all surprise, in my days, mid to late 70’s it was walk to mopo (garden) and walk down to lalay with the donkey carrying most of the load and your jola on your side with the mangoes and avocados you did not want to crush as you had plans for super and snack. Now if transport not going up to mopo, mopo wont be visited. Imagine, i see women going on transport to garden with a full head of curlers and cutex on their toe and fingernails. I know times have changed but heath remains the same PLEASE LOOK AFTER YOUR HEALTH. Lets get back the milk and honey and let us include more natural and less process foods in our diet and we only have one life.

While you made me laugh at your comment, pray that you do not gain that much weight. Some people are born with a glandular problem. Others develop it as they grow older and some others develop it from eating too much, unhealthy foods, drinking pop, eating icecream, sugary and fattening products including not exercising as walking.
Another reason, as we grow older, if we are not as active as we were previously, we could gain weight. Weight gain is not always deliberate, eating too much and non-nutritious foods.
I have a health book with a worse picture. If only I could copy it and post it on DNO. :) I would not do that. :) It is a real scandal. Of course it is a picture but it sends a message loud and care about obesity and its health hazards. It appears this is the same problem world-wide.

Some how I find that survey missing in substance in that, when one raises such issues, which in Dominica`s case has become a national epidemic obesity is rampant in Dominica, with both men and women. What we should be doing is use our media houses more often to educate the population. Have massive workshops in our schools, at our Hospitals, clinics ect, We do have persons who are qualified to lecture on this subject, utilize them. I am aware it starts with self discipline and the onus is on the individual but we have those who are stronger than other and are able to resist all those junk foods we have become so accustom too. Some persons use their junk in their trunk as a badge of honor while some can hardly breath because they wearing all those tights under their clothe. Now their is so much wire on a Bra enough to tie a cow, so much fake hairs you think you are walking with a Horse, so much padding makes one think they are going to face Michael Holding and afraid to get bounced. There is no way for our cool welcoming Dominican breeze to keep the engine cool. Its a dam shame and we should call out those guilty of weighing down our resources. WE ARE WHAT WE EAT! OR DRINK.

This is no apologist for KFC and the other fast food vendors locally, but please be aware that this acceleration to fatty-land was in full gear a few years before most of these franchises set up shop. What one can say, is that they made it easier, by creating more accessible options to fat accumulation.

Dominicans females just eat a lot, period! They don’t exercise either, and many believe that wearing the latest tight clothing will make up for their gross expansions.

Furthermore the COMBINATION of these lax consumption patterns and no execise with the generous use of potent chemical contraceptives, creates an explosive cocktail. As a result You’ll see the women shapes morphing into masculine-like proportions, as excessive fatty matter is deposited in their waistline and upper back area.

One thing for sure, when it come’s to physical ‘progress’ Dominica has a HEAVY ‘advantage’ over its OECS sisters. Wake up people! WAKE UP!

The processed foods game is stacked against the average person. Cut out the hormone chicken from the U.S. and the feed with hormones in them that are fed to livestock. Add to that the GMO foods and high fructose added to so many foods and drinks and you have a recipe for disaster. It doesn’t matter how much you exercise if you are eating this junk. This should be an organic island but it is not. People love the herbicides and pesticides to put on the food. Those also add to the cancer problem. Doesn’t seem like people here want to change to wake up. The life span is already reversing. No more 100 yr. old people.

We invite the Dominican people to Islam. Islam means submission to do the will of God. Allah is the Arabic name for God. The message of Islam is the same as all the prophets and messengers such as Moses, David, Jesus, Abraham (peace be upon them). Muhammad who was the seal and final prophet (p) taught the same message as all the other prophets (p), worship Allah alone without mediators, the worship to Allah must be free from images and beings between Allah and man, in other words to go directly to Allah (Glory to Him the Most High).

Chapter 2:183 of the Holy Qur’an reads:

O you who believe! Observing As-Saum (the fasting) is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqoon (the pious)

Fasting would be a good remedy for these women as it would remove lots of toxins from their bodies as well as it would discipline and strengthen their minds to curb their desires. This is the root of the problem, these people do not have the WILL POWER to resist these dangerous foods for their health.

The Holy month of ramadan begins on the 10th of July in sha Allah (If Allah wills), there are medical doctors who are non Muslims who fast as well.

Here is an Islamic website for you, one can order books to read for free as well as download pdf files and can have an idea about Islam. May Allah guide you O son/daughter of Adam. Ameen.

Be careful what you state for you will be challenged. Your submission and the Christian submission are totally different. Coincidentally, I heard it over the weekend on the US Catholic Radio. I usually make notes but I was busy and did not stop to do so, now, to my regret for I could have stated it word for word – verbatim.
Those who submit to God do not wage war and do not kill others sayng their god told them to do so.
I heard your Islam founder, prior to his death he said “Kill the infidels until all of them say, Allah.” The same is occurring in Africa. Therefore, I am unable to comprehend what you mean by saying submission to God.
We do not want your books. We have highly, spiritually enlightening, uplifting and fulfilling Christian books. We also have our Christian faith and would not trade it for nothing else. This is The Only Way, The Truth, The Light of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
Something tells me you are a Dominican and were once a Catholic Christian. Correct me if I erred. Anyway Mohammed was a Catholic Christian and so were your ancestors before he formed the Islam religion. In the ancient days, you were called “Moslems.”

Well I a slim women who walks every morning and people watch me like u slim already why are u exercising. I do it to keep fit. I see some of my girlfriends and for them the fat on them is thickness and I always try to encourage them to come walk with me in the morning but never happens. All those kfc chicken etc have hormones and the chinese foods have MSG. I indulge once in a while but there is something called eating in moderation. Not only do these foods cause obesity but many other diseases attacking women such as fibroids, cyst, lump in breast etc. Young women time to wake up and practice healthy eating habits and activities.

    • Justice and Truth
      June 24, 2013

MSG is dangerous. It is not recommended by health experts. I have a bottle which I will be throwing out. I have a lot of seasoning. When they are used up I will not be purchasing more. Onion, garlic and a little salt are much better and are tasty.
I make my own salad dressing; tomato ketchup. I have made mayonnaise and some others that we can make. I make my own bread. I plan to make my doughnuts, snacks – anything that I can possibly bake. Back to homemade as it were in Dominica  I love homemade. At least I know what I am eating. I have practically ceased purchasing tin stuffs, only if absolutely necessary.
There is a lot to share. I recently received an email about imported foods, as fish etc. I will not mention the name of the country where they originate from but you may have an idea. This email is upsetting. All those who have read it stated that they will be careful in future and watch the labeling of the product prior to purchasing it.
My plan is to telephone the customer service of at least two grocery stores that I shop in, in the area where I reside and inform them about it. I will ask why are they importing foods, etc., from that country?
I will also send a copy to the health minister, my MP, MPP and the favorite TV Station I view the News. I do not know what they will do but I will make them aware that this information is circulating and it will go far also overseas.
A man who visited there observed the manner in which the products are prepared and he spoke about it on TV. Those who heard commenced forwarding the information. I am pleased to read it and I will not be purchasing certain items. Let Dominicans be aware of what they purchase and read the labels of the originator(s).

And the thing is, some gorgeous young women still want to be taking Periactin! Good luck ladies. Dominicans in general have no reason to be out of shape. The weather is perfect for exercise, no gym needed, and the food (home grown) is arguably the healthiest in the world. People want to leave good food for rubbish food. And young girls taking supplements to put on weight, while the rest of the world looking to get smaller in size.

    • Justice and Truth
      June 24, 2013

They do the same in those big countries; not smart at all. Some of those products will make them sick and kill them.
When you see the advertisements on TV, as I read in a health book and also heard on TV, the people are highly paid actors. They never used the products and know nothing about them.

    June 22, 2013

We Dominicans don’t know what we want. Some Dominicans look down and say ‘nasty’ things about those who are slim and in shape, yet we are hearing on a daily basis the dangers of being obese.
Many Dominican men love those thick women. Some of them (the women) try 1000 000 000% to get thick, because Dominican men like women with big backside.. Some of the women are saying that they don’t want any small man. At schools some children make fun of the slim ones, but at the same schools, they are taught, how vulnerable big/obese people are.
WE ARE A CONFUSED NATION! GOD ALONE CAN HELP US IN DOMINICA!

Yes, we shouldn’t need studies to act on the obvious. I cried when KFC opened a few years ago, but it’s easy to finger-point. Lots of fresh or lightly cooked vegetables (spinach, broccoli, kale, carrots pumpkin…) and fruit needs to be the foundation of any health diet.
A minor correction: the hydrogenation process does add hydrogen to oils, making the molecules more “saturated” (with hydrogen) and semi-solid (as in soft-spread margarine). Although beef, lamb and dairy may have higher levels of saturated fat, it is NEVER trans-fat. More recent studies are showing what we already know, that our bodies know how to deal with naturally occurring saturated fats as in coconut oil, but NOT with industrial produced trans-fats.

The entire world has obese people. The discussion this week in Toronto or on the News about obesity, it is now classified as an illness. Trust them. They will always come up with an excuse for this problem, rather than address the issue, why so many children and adults are obese.
I disagree with them. This does not pertain to every one. As some people get older, they gain weight. It may be due to inactivity, overeating including eating sugary substances.
There is a price to pay for progress. A survey was conducted. Were those who participated informed about proper nutrition? Were they given relevant information?
As some people get older, they do not walk as much as they used to. Walking is an excellent form of exercise. Most people drive rather than walk. If residing far away, it is not possible to walk to work, to church and to shop.
Home cooking is the best but not with too much salt and sugar. If possible, use honey rather than sugar. Watch your portions. Eat fruits and vegetables. Drink ample water and tea – 6 to 8 medium glasses.
Natural resources all the way. Eat very little processed foods as also meats. Drink very little pop, if none at all.
I am not against treating oneself to fast foods just as long they are not eaten frequently. Once in a while is acceptable, in moderation.
Practice makes perfect. A certain degree of discipline is necessary.
The norm today is eating healthily, staying healthy and looking young enough. For those who love cooking, there are many health recipes in books and also on recipe Websites. Just Google your choice of recipe. You can prepare your menu, bake your own eats as cakes, snacks also pizza. You can also purchase plain popcorn and prepare it healthily. Those Websites have many such recipes.
A turn around of eating and drinking habits is necessary to eating and drinking healthily. Most of all, teach the young children healthy eating. Be an example and model for them and they will not yearn for fast foods and pop and certain snacks. Good luck Dominican residents.
I, too, do my utmost to practice what I preach.

We are ingesting too many toxins in our system. Dominica has such rich fertile soil, yet many fail to utilize the land. Our culture is dying because we embrace others instead. If more people would cherish their culture, and partake in our food, music etc, then this will be brought under control. I love my local dishes and so no matter where i go, i embrace who i am, a Caribbean woman who will never lose her identity to please others. GARBAGE IN, GARBAGE OUT. We know no matter how well we eat, some of us still get diabetes, high blood pressure, etc., due to the fall of human which is SIN. But we know about 90% of diseases are from what we eat and our environment. Generally we are what we eat.

If we don’t sweat, we are not burning any calories, and our bodies pays for that. Nothing in life is easy, but in Dominica, it seems the young people want everything easy and fast, but the long term consequences are pain full and deadly. I don’t know why they don’t take their health seriously.

I have left Dominica for a while, but come home two or three times a year. I still eat all my Dominica food in New York. I have to be extremely busy or hungry to buy the Mc Donald, Wendy, Burger King, Pizza etc. These foods are empty calories, and have no nutritional values. We try to follow the crowd, but we cannot afford it financially, and health wise. Please Dominicans, leave the fast food alone, because these fast foods, will give us fast disease and death.

I would not call this information garbage. People need to be informed so that those who are affected and others who are not will change their lifestyle before it is too late for them.
Granted, not everyone will have the identical type of illness. If we are not already sick, we do not know when we will get sick. Are you aware that those illnesses could be avoided even from a very young age?
There are some people who lived to a ripe old age who did not have diabetes or high blood pressure.
More often than not, these ailments have something to do with the lifestyle, types of food and how much is eaten. The personality may also have something to do with it. What is occurring in our life and how much stress, anger and the like exist. Employment and domestic problems could contribute to illness.
Take for instance, a place like Dominica, a tropical country, how many people drink water? If they do, how much water do they drink daily? Water is good for the blood which pumps the heart. The blood travels to the brain. If only people would drink the maximum amount of water daily in addition to nutritious Dominican foods and fish and also get a certain amount of rest/sleep, do you not think that some people may not get a heart attack, aneurism or stroke? These include diabetes and high blood pressure and probably other ailments. Ask your doctor.

i must say that we need help other than dieting reports from surveys to control obesity in Dominica.we need sidewalks ,parks , cheaper health products ,exercise facility and safety on the roads , many times women want to go and walk and jog , but are afraid some mad man will try to or will rape them or dogs on the roads . these are some of the things i have face trying to keep my weight down. so the same people who did the survey should recommend these things to who ever is responsible for health and security in Dominica , and if they correct these things i guaranty you that the next survey report will be different .

Cooking at home by itself is not a solution cause one can cook the same junk at home.We are encouraged to eat more of veggies and fruits but with all the chemicals being used in these foods are they healthier or more detrimental to our health? The provision of today is not what our parents ate. You buy the same veggies that are supposed to be healthy and before 2 days they rot on the refrigerator.

KFC (fast food) is not the ones making people fat.
People are the ones making ‘people’ fat.
Understanding that everything needs to be in moderation.

People need to be held accountable for their own health behavior. Do ‘I’ exercise. Am ‘I ‘eating healthy.

I am surrounded my fast foods and on some days it is convenient. But what do ‘I’ order when I am there? Do I order the healthy salad or some fatty food.

At the end of the day, ‘I’ am responsible for the choices I make.

I remember when green mango, ripe papaya (pawpaw), cashima, soursop, bwateh, passion fruit, guava and others were our daily snacks. Chocolate and other sugary snacks were a once-a-year “treat”-Usually during Christmas. Now, all that is gone as people crave to live up to the American standard, they gravitate toward what they see on T.V. and are ensnared by eye-catching labels on all these fatty, chemically processed foods.

Even the juices filled with chemicals sitting on shelves for months they can’t resist, while birds are happily pecking at all the ripe fruits and shaking their feathery bottoms in gratitude. What the birds can’t have, go to waste while our people who boast of a nature isle, eat what is not natural – irony at best!

I also remember tablet, coconut cheese, peppermint, all kinds of cakes, pear-drops, ice cream. As someone pointed out. We ate all these sweets and carbohydrates but we burnt them out.

Children played outside; not on the computer or cellphones or other sit down inside games. We used to visit friends instead we call them on our cell phones or email them. We are too busy.

Days gone by, we walked to church, walked to dances, walked to the beach and walked to the cinema – your date didn’t mind if you had no transport – because everyone walked everywhere.

Now we drive our children to school and we drive ourselves to work and even if the shop is close by and we hardly have anything to carry we still drive to the shops.

So in addition to what we eat we walk less, so we exercise less. Even the skinny ones are less healthy that those we call obese. Because for want of being skinny we starve ourselves and eat rabbit foods that cannot be healthy either. We eat a big meal and we sit down and watch TV after, instead of going for a stroll. We are too busy and too tired – when we get home all we want to do is relax with our feet up in front of the TV and fall asleep. Reading DNO or other internet sites are our new form of relaxation!! I am relaxing right now when I could be outside walking or running but the sun is too hot and it may rain later and besides it is cooler inside. Right?

Gosh I must do something! Maybe tomorrow, no, tomorrow is Sunday, my day of rest. Maybe Next week?

I agree with the bloggers who say that our life style and diet have changed for the worse. Physical activity and proper nutrition consisting of fruits and vegetables have gone out the window – for most.

In some cases, this is not just laziness or prefering the western culture. It also has to do with access to reasonably prices healthy foods. Has anyone been to the Roseau market lately? Care to share how much a tiny bunch of carrot going for? Even things like lime to make a squash. For a country blessed with an abundance of natural resources, I don’t get why the costs of produce are so high. So … I am not defending or excusing obesity. But fixing the problem means looking at issues of access/cost as well.

        June 22, 2013

Well I never say ‘meg-zo’ doesn’t die from those diseases. It is just more likely for an overweight person to suffer from those diseases, because of the additional health risk that come with obesity, but I bet you know that already, so doh fraid to go on a healthy diet and exercise program you will feel much better ;)

    • June 21, 2013

Irie, slim girls get all of these diseases too. Yes, the big (fat) girls used to call the slim ones megzo. A person can be big and HEALTHY. Big do not always mean unhealthy nor obese. We, both men and women, really should take better care of ourselves.

Hey, when are they going to do a survey on the HUGE men?

      • Irie
        June 22, 2013

Itassi, you cannot be big and healthy awah. Unless your bigness is muscle mass it is impossible. Maybe you can be big and not showing signs of chronic illness yet, but any time your body fat percentage is too high, you cannot call yourself big and healthy. Obesity itself is a disease, that eventually leads to a host of other diseases. We need to tell our women that being overweight is absolutely nothing to be proud of. I never say slim people doesn’t get sick, it just is more likely to find an overweight person getting certain non-communicable diseases. All the medical studies and evidence points to that fact.

Our health situation in DA has changed at an alarming rate. Surely things were not that bad in the late 80s early 90s. Today we dont’t walk, and participate in physical activities (such as hiking, swimming in the rivers/sea, playing sports, farming) like we used to back then. And to make matters worse our diet has changed in a negative way. We adopt a western diet of fats and sugars and abandon our coconut oil, banana, plantain, breadfruit, yams, dasheen, tania, cassava, local juices – the list goes on – for white rice, white bleached flour, pasta, imported deaders. This is a serious problem in the making. If the UK and the US cannot figure out how to handle the health situation presented by this western diet how are we in DA going to handle it. We need to get back to our roots. In any case how can an Island like DA (the Nature Isle) with such a rugged terrain end up on the obesity least baffles me. It is clear our promotion of nature is just in words not in action.

    • Annonymous Reader
      June 21, 2013

I think i can give you some help there…have you counted the number of buses on the island lately? The supply is greater than the demand. Just look at Mahaut and Grandbay and the number of buses available against their population.

Secondly, I’m glad you threw your stats right back to the 80s and 90s…Can you remember it was in those days we had beach parties at “Aqua-Cade”, “Shipwreck”, and a blockorama after the basketball game on the hard-court? These were the days when people danced more. Life was less violent too, because people were too busy having fun.

Summer time was beach party at “Aqua-Cade” on a Wednesday. Young people had no time to get fat because we would be dancing every week…Hours of dancing kept us in shape, I can tell you.

Thumbs up if you can recall those days of Wednesday beach party?  Where have those sweet days gone??

I think there are times when one can have a feel for these foods, but to make it a habit is UNHEALTHY. You are so right. Now and then if time doesn’t permit me to cook I usually go to one of the fast food places to grab something quick to eat and it is surprising the number of school children who I meet waiting in line. Its as if parents don’t know what it is to cook for children anymore. Some of the parents are actually unemployed so that means they have all the time in the world to prepare a meal so that the children can get a warm plate of food after school. But it seems easier to give them $10 or $20 to buy fast food

      • Brathwait
        June 21, 2013

There seem to be a few irony in your story. First, saying that you are buying the same fast food that you accuse the school children of buying. Second, you are accusing an unemployed mother of preferring to give their kids $10 or $20 instead of cooking, and you say that you end up in the fast food place now and then if time doesn’t permit… what a laugh. You are just as guilty, fast food junky.
