Portable toilets to be placed in Roseau during carnival

What do you do when you are in the middle of a carnival band and nature calls?

The Roseau City Council has come up with an initiative that will put that problem to rest.

On carnival Monday and Tuesday revelers will be able to use portable toilets placed strategically around the city when things get a little ticklish.

And it will cost a small donation of one dollar.

It is part of a drive to keep the city clean during the street jump up.

“We have taken the decision to have toilets set up in strategic areas in the city,” Mayor Irene John said on Wednesday. “And we are appealing to the people out there to make good use of the toilets and use it in a very responsible manner. In some cases, we may or may not ask the users of the toilets to just donate a dollar, because we have to pay persons to man the toilets and to make sure that they are clean.”

She said there might be instances when patrons will not be able donate, however they will be facilitated. “That’s what it is there for,” she noted.

She said the council is passionate about seeing the city clean and appealed to revelers to utilize garbage bins placed around the city.

“I am asking persons to make good use of the bins that are put out there by Solid Waste,” he said. “I am not saying that we will not get some garbage, but again try to do it in responsible manner.”

She urged the public to treat garbage collecter “as one of us.”

“They are performing a very important task,” the mayor noted, adding that vendors and revelers should avoid breaking bottles and use Styrofoam instead.

Meanwhile, Public Relations Officer of Solid Waste Management Corporation, Jeno Jacob, said vandalism of garbage bins in Roseau is a huge problem.

“Problems we have been facing is that persons have been setting the bins ablaze, people have been slashing the top of those bins, destroying the bins and a number of vagrants are going around the city lifting up the tops of those bins and destroying those bins,” he lamented.

He said the introduction of CCTV during the street jump up could assist “in identifying those culprits who continue to destroy those bins.”

Good move, one small step at a time and we will do it together. This mayor is awake while the other one was looking for liquor in places the sun don’t shine. Great move and keep up the good job.

Is this really worth putting up here so that the entire world can see. Some of the comments up here ….
I’m just saying. Don’t get offended when we’re called backward or third world or anything to that nature because honestly, sometimes we bring these on ourselves.

We must consider our public image when making comments up here.

Dominica – Roseau has come a long way. It is moving on. Toilets during carnival is a great idea. Having someone supervise it to clean up after it is used is a wise idea. Some people are not careful when using the toilets especially if they are intoxicated.
By the way, liquor is not allowed during the Toronto Caribana parade. If they are caught drinking, the police will arrest them. This should be the next move for the mayor to establish. You know, when people are tipsy or drunk how they could misbehave and fights ensue.
A few words of advice. Ladies of all keep some Kleenex – tissues in your purse/pocket in the event the toilet paper runs out. This could occur. If it occurs in restaurants and stores in Toronto, it could occur in Dominica, given the number of revelers who might use them.
It is not like those days when some people would run to a family or a friends’ house. The more people drink, the more frequent they will need to use the toilets; not washrooms as they are called in buildings.
Have an enjoyable and peaceful Carnival. Have fun, clean fun!

This is only a stop-gap measure. The Council should consider at least two paid permanent public latrines for the city, where people congregate most. I suggest the Roseau Market and near the corner of Old Street and Kennedy Avenue.

I think that they should also install cameras in the most crowded places, not to charge or arrest people, but to see how the public handle the move and what improvement needs to be made, maybe the locations just saying, however the PORTA-POTTY is a very good idea GOOD MOVE..

Great idea. The side streets really smell of urine, during those days.

  24. February 27, 2014

That is a good move because at the end of the day Roseau stinks. There are not enough public toilets in Roseau so having the portable toilets placed in various points during the carnival season and asking for a small contribution is a wise idea. Good going Madam Mayor and you should tell your fellow Mayor of Portsmouth to do the same on carnival day. Domincans utilize the toilets wisely and give the small donation when requested to do so.
