Multi-sex partners can lead to cervical cancer in women, gynecologist warns

cancerMen and women in Dominica have been told that having one sexual partner could help in the fight against cervical cancer among the country’s women.

A female gynecologist on the island is pointing to the fact that having multi-sex partners is a cause of cervical cancer; a situation that is worrying health officials.

Consultant Gynecologist Dr. Bianca Roberts, said at the start of a cervical cancer workshop on Tuesday that both women and men need to be vigilant in their lifestyles.

“If you have more than one simultaneously, more than one in your history, your risk is increased. If you have male partners who have a lot of partners at that same time, or men who have sex with men, this is also high risk. If you start having sex early, you are at risk,” she said.

She said women in particular need to be vigilant in the protecting themselves from cervical cancer. “The only person with the cervix is the females and they need to protect themselves,” she added.

Meantime women in Dominica are being urged to get screened with the aim of preventing cervical cancer.

Consultant Gynaecologist and Obstetrician, Dr. Ruby Blanc, said with advanced methods to detect all types of abnormalities, one death from cervical cancer among women is one case too many.

According to statistics, approximately 80,000 new cases of cervical cancer occur annually with about 15 percent accounting for cases in the Caribbean and 35,000 deaths yearly with 12 percent accounting for deaths in the Caribbean.

So much for early detection!!! Especially with this back log, who is to tell that all those pending tests will be done properly!!!

It’s all about chance: you can have one partner, first time, ang get pregnant, HIV, or HPV.
Yet others can make sex their profession, and never get caught.

Look at some smokers who smoke all their lives, and are healthier than you and me. Others smoke a couple of months, or inhale a little second hand smoke, and BAm, they dead.
    All about chance.

    just read my people read!!

Dr roberts states that it INCREASES your risk.

The person who wrote the article is the one misleading by stating that promiscuity CAUSES the Cerv CA.

In addition, the vaccine is effective for certain serotypes which are more prevalent in the US where the research was done and must be given before the individual becomes sexually active.

Dominicans u all know it all with u all comments.. Do the research:

Promiscuity is one of the causes

These factors may increase your risk of cervical cancer:

Many sexual partners. The greater your number of sexual partners — and the greater your partner’s number of sexual partners — the greater your chance of acquiring HPV.
Early sexual activity. Having sex at an early age increases your risk of HPV.
Other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). If you have other STIs — such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis or HIV/AIDS — you have an increased risk of having HPV.
A weak immune system. Most women who are infected with HPV never develop cervical cancer. However, if you have an HPV infection and your immune system is weakened by another health condition, you may be more likely to develop cervical cancer.
Cigarette smoking. Smoking and an HPV infection may work together to cause cervical cancer.

Dominica is a place where we probably have the best of everything, or the worst of all things, and among the worst seems to be the people who servers in the medical profession, as doctors, and medical advisors.

If we are not careful with the use of the English language, we can use it in a way which will cause us to lose our credibility, and what we say though it may have some value it may seem like hogwash!

First of all “promiscuity” simply means a mixture, or mingling of persons, or things, promiscuous sexual behavior falls into this category.

However, I have never learnt that having sexual intercourse with multiple partners cause cervical cancer.

What is common knowledge is that young girls who tends to indulge in sexual intercourse at an early age are likely to become victims of cervical cancer: that has been proven scientifically! Now Cancer of the cervix is common among women between the ages of 30 and 50 years old.

Risk factors include frequent cervical inflammation, sexually transmitted diseases including genital warts, and multiple pregnancies.

The cancer cells arise from the epithelium covering the cervical tip. In a papanicolaou (Pap) smear, or cervical smear test, some of these epithelial cells are scraped away, and then examined for abnormalities.

A Pap smear is the most effective way to detect this slow-growing cancer; women are advised to have one every year.

One of the first warning signs of cervical cancer is vaginal bleeding between menstrual periods, after coitus (sexual intercourse), or after menopause is established. Note: the appendicle test should be done routinely every year in women over 40 years old to rule out the possibility of cervical malignancy.

The Doctor has spoken. What she stated is correct. Having many sexual partners and utilizing contraceptives do lead to cervical cancer.
Practice self-restraint. God meant the sexual act for only married people. Some of you love to experiment before marriage, using each other as if they are a doormat. All this accounts for personal unhappiness.
It is common sense. If not most, love sex more than they love God. Can one imagine that? Because God gave you a body with a sexual organ does not mean you have to overdo it. Many do. In the end some do pay the price. If they are not married and are not making love to their wives at that time think of where their souls might end up in eternity.
There is also prostate cancer. Has any doctor informed us of what is the cause of it? I do think I have an idea. People must also think of what causes all those illnesses which reduce the health to nothing and kill people.

Justice And Truth, there you go again, believing some crap!

That is why so many people die in Dominica, all due to malpractice, and the so called doctors get away with it. Sexual promiscuity has nothing to do with cervical cancer, as she conveyed it.

The risk factors are as simple as I stated, wether a woman have coitus with a single man, or a thousand men, the risk factor is the same!

The name consultant gynecologist does not mean anything, especially when one disseminates bad and unfounded information. If DNO would allow it, I could comment, and elaborate more on the subject in a that I could put this so called doctor to shame, I could detail the disease in a way perhaps in which she has never heard before, and even get into the treatment of cervical cancer.

Because some of us does not possess the title “M.D.” and walk around with a stethoscope around our neck, or in a white jacket pocket, does not mean we are all dumb, some of us majored, and are involved into health science, and when people write crap, those of us who knows we recognize we recognize the crap you see!

People like you are too gullible, there was a time when I keenly read your comments, but these days I have my reservation on reading what you write, you make too many unfounded comments, as in this case, how can you condone this person comments when she is off base, and you do not know any better?

Have you ever majored in health science, nobody can become a medical doctor without majoring in health science, entering college as a premed student, and then going into some medical program. unless you know what she is talking about do not condone it okay!

I said the Doctor is correct. I have reasons to state this. These are my views and not yours based on many factors and also what I have heard and read.

Then sir you do not know the consultant gynecologist you are talking about. You know so much why don’t you take her to shame as you would like to but make sure you are also infallible.

What you should do when you recognize the crap that some of these M.D.write you should write positive and constructive comments and not run your mouth as if you want to bring the doctor in question down.

Yes, I know her quite well, for your information she does not walk with a white coat and a stethoscope around her neck nor does she give off the wrong information.

Why don’t you go to PMH ask for the doctor in question, approach and consult with her or better still send your mother or sister to her then feedback to the public the result of the so called consultant gynecologist.
Next time you write make sure it is positive, sounds like you have an xe to grind and have real issues. DNO is not the place for that.

I wonder sometimes how many of these doctor’s quotes actually come from real M.D.s.

It is a fact that smoking cigarettes causes cancer. It is not the ONLY cause of cancer but it increases the chances of cancer . The more cigarettes a person smokes the GREATER their chances are of getting cancer.

By the same token it is established that cervical cancer is a sexually transmitted disease. Sexual intercourse may not be the only cause. But the fact remains the more partners a woman has the greater her chance is of contacting the disease.

Becoming sexually active at a young age increases
a woman’s chances of cervical cancer. This is simply because she will likely have more partners. Health care professionals are not doing young women any favor by instructing them on how to violate God’s moral code and avoid the negative consequences. The Consequences are often more than physical.

Doctors who counsel single girls on sexual matters should be honest and tell then the only 100% protection against HPV or HIV is abstinence, not condoms and not a vaccination. Also, a sexually transmitted disease is not the only thing they should be concerned about. There is unwanted pregnancy that should that should be considered in a nation that has 40 % – 50 % of its babies born to unwed mothers. Besides, not enough thought is given to the scared lives and psychological problems that are created by premarital sexual relations. One only has to read BELLA’S columns to have a window on this.

Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill, D.D., International Evangelist.

Please don’t bite my head off if you don’t like what I say, but do you know how men get these infections under the foreskin? Some of them did not learn how to wash themselves properly. If this is infected with a virus, bruising the cervix can definitely deliver this virus to the small wound and cause cancer after some time. The woman may have one partner, and it still happens. But it is a fact that several partners will increase the risk.

Ladies,it is time to smarten up and have your men and husbands wash themselves before ‘meals’

It is not promiscuity that causes it…but exposure HPV,etc….you can have sex with one person and still be exposed to cervical cancer if your partner is infected. People must be very careful with their choice of words, making sure it reflects exactly what they mean to convey.

@ Anonymous….Before u get defensive, Dr. Roberts stated that promiscuity is “a” cause of cervical cancer. Quite rightly so, one partner can infect u with HPV, but where does it stem from? A history of multiple sexual partners NOT necessarily simultaneously.
She also indicated that one partner “could” help fight against cervical cancer.
In essence, promiscuity increases the risk!
So ladies please get regular pap smears and stay safe.

She did not say condoms reduce risk because then don’t. Female condoms are better than those worn by males, but they still don’t eliminate skin to skin contact.

The surest way to prevent HPV transmission is through abstenance or vacination before one is exposed to the strains of the virus that cause not just cervial but virginal, penile or head and throat cancers.

Dr. Kupt this is a clip from google “It has been known for many years that cervical cancer is extremely rare among nuns.
The chance of it developing rises with the number of sexual partners a woman has, and the younger she is when she starts sexual activities.
Any woman can decrease her risk of developing cervical cancer by delaying sexual activity until she is older and then having a smear test once every three to five years.
The value of the smear test is to detect any pre-cancerous changes that precede cancer – by many years in most cases. The cervical smear test is a routine way of checking the health of the cervix”.

Cervical cancer IS a sexually transmitted disease. I am not telling you sexual activity is the ONLY way cervical cancer can develop because my very limited medical knowledge does not allow me to go that far. I am working on this.

I am speaking to the ladies…

You cannot be infected by a partner who does NOT have the disease. You will not be infected by a partner who does not carry the disease regardless of how many partners you have but you will be INCREASING your chances of being caught because one of them may be infected.

The EARLIER a woman BECOMES sexually active and the MORE sexual partners she has the GREATER her chances are of being in contact with one who IS infected.

This is the reason multiple sex partners increases your chances of bring infected. It is not how MANY partners you have. It is the fact that ONE of them was a carrier! The same principle applies to ANY sexually transmitted disease.

Promiscuity increases the chances of cervical cancer in women the same of buggery increases the chances of AIDS in men. Obviously a man is not going to get cervical cancer.
But if he has been with a woman who is infected he can be a carrier.

Some have commented on what filthy and vile creatures these men are. There is nothing I can say in their defence.
But it takes two to tango! We attract to us the kind of person we are ourselves. Since this story is about cervical cancer we are talking about women. Women can lessen their chances of this disease by becoming the kind of woman a good and respectable man will want for a wife and remaining pure until she is married to such a man

I refuse to believe that there are no decent men left who still live by the moral code God has given us in the Holy Scriptures. The problem is so many women do not find them because they do not go to – or hang our – where they are. They meet and mingle with the wrong people in the wrong places because they want to be with their own kind! They date serial fornicators and eventually hit on one who is infected with something.

The people who are tangled up in this world system have created their own problems now they struggle to come up with their own solutions which never seem to work well.

Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. International Evangelist.
