STORY OF INTEREST: 92-year-old works out at gym

Ruby Lawrence, 92, proves that age is just a number as she demonstrates her ability to pump weights at the Hilton hotel in New Kingston yesterday. - Rudolph Brown/Photographer

When Ruby Lawrence walks into the gym, she gets all the stares.

Of course, that’s not uncommon for busty 20-somethings with butt-hugging tights. But for the bespectacled fitness buff, who is quite a looker in her own right, eyes turn for a completely different reason.

Lawrence is 92 years old, and while that’s impressive enough, she’s also an active member of the Gymkhana fitness centre in New Kingston.

“I work out twice every week, for an hour each time,” she said.

Lawrence is the eldest and perhaps most popular member of the gym, which partnered with the Caribbean Community of Retired Persons Limited (CCRP) to host a chat session with the great-grandmother at the gym yesterday.

The sprightly retired nurse spoke to members of the CCRP about her love for working out and her commitment to eating healthy.

“I don’t eat junk food or drink sodas. I love fruits and drink five glasses of water each day,” she said.

That should motivate all the Dominicans who have purposefully stopped eating their fruits and vegetables and have adopted a lifestyle of death and destruction to their cells. Instead of drinking water many taken to the soft drinks which are loaded with sugar and preservatives. Age is really a number and the mind is capable of achieving whatever it conceives.

@Crystal Brown: I totally agree with you. Dominicans have just changed their eating habits, since fast food come on the scene. I even get caught up but I really try my best to do the fast food thing, twice a month. That is stuff like pizza and kfc, but I am still trying my best to leave the sodas alone. The best way I think to restrict the sodas, is not to have any at home but when you work in town, it can be a bit tempting. But we should follow in Ruby’s footsteps.
