Two students from a high school located on the eastern side of the Dominica have become the first recipients of a scholarship sponsored by a Castle Bruce born doctor who feels the need to give back to his community.

The Dr. Augustus Valmond Scholarship was presented to first formers of the Castle Bruce Secondary School, Joyan Edwards and Joyella Challenger, on Monday.

The scholarships will be for five years  and every year, two additional students will receive scholarships.

Valmond, a kidney specialist based in the US, said the gesture is part of giving back to his community. “I feel a strong connection to my community and I would like to help in any way I can,” he said.

He also said he would also like to help in whatever way he can from a health standpoint to improve the lives and conditions of patients suffering from kidney diseases in Dominica and is presently exploring ways of doing so.

The scholarships are awarded based on merit and need and will be given to children who did not receive a Government Scholarship or bursary.

Valmond was born in Castle Bruce and attended the Castle Bruce Primary School.  He obtained a Government Scholarship (5th place) and then went on to attend the Dominica Grammar School, where he excelled academically.

He received a Doctor of Medicine Degree at Howard University and studied internal Medicine and Nephrology the Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New York. Nephrology is a branch of internal medicine and pediatrics, dealing with the study of the function and diseases of the kidney.

Today, he practices General Internal Medicine and Nephrology in Manhattan, New York.

The scholarship process was orchestrated by Loreen Bannis Roberts and is implemented by a scholarship committee based in Castle Bruce.

ThaTS what the so call lawyers and so call doctors should be doing. giving back to their communities. Not staying on social media and cause trouble. Or getting involve in Dominica’s politics. while they putting problems amongst people in Dominica, they are enjoying the luxurious life in the united states. I wish, you know who you are, would use your time and do something constructive and give back to your community like this Doctor is doing.

This same Doctor,if he makes a contribution on something, that will not be in the government’s favour, you would knock Him too.
Some of all YOU too want to have your CAKE and EAT IT.That” what you are accusing people of,is THAT what you are doing right now.GO Figure.

Thank you so much, Dr Valmond, and well done to Joyan and Joyella. I know Joyan, and she is a lovely, smart and helpful girl, and I am so pleased for her, and her family.
Last October, when I asked Joyan whether she was enjoying her new secondary school, she said “it’s really great, we are learning a lot”.

What does that have to do with anything? In her capacity as Liason Officer in the Diaspora and a community woman she secured these scholarships for her people. So your point is just irrelevant and is of bad taste!!!

      March 21, 2013

Just to point out- Loreen was not the one who wrote the article. Her name is mentioned because of the role she played at securing that scholarship. More to come……

I commend you on this move Doc. but we need a Nephrologist and Internist at the PMH. We need these 2 specialties more than any, we have no Nephrologist in Dominica. The best thing you can do for your people is stay and contribute as a doble specialist in Dominica. PLEASE STAY, WE HAVE NO KIDNEY SPECIALIST AND MY SISTER IS DYING.

Maybe if you leave your email address (or other contact info) on here, the doc. might be able to contact you and offer some form of assistance in what ever way possible to help you sister. you never know….

Most Doctors practice medicine because of their passion to help and make a positive difference.

I just wish to say thanks for the opportunity that you have provided these children and their families with. Too often we are quicker to criticize a man’s efforts than to show gratitude.
