Abused pregnant woman tells her story

abused womanA pregnant 24-year-old  ex girlfriend of a member of the Special Service Unit (SSU) of the Commonwealth of Dominica Police Force, said she has had enough of his abuse and a public confrontation at her work place on Friday afternoon was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

Speaking to DNO in an exclusive interview on Monday the woman, still apparently traumatized by Friday’s event, said she had a miserable weekend and is afraid for her unborn child.

The woman told DNO that on the day in question she and fellow workers were in a conversation which involved the officer.

While they were talking one of them pointed out that he was outside the establishment speaking to his mother, who also works at the same company.

She said one of her male coworkers, involved in the conversation, was behind the counter at the business place and as soon as he pushed back by his chair “the officer just come inside,” pointed at his own head and started saying “that’s the policeman, that’s the policeman all you talking about.”

She said the policeman then grabbed her coworker’s hand and started twisting it. “I see he serious and seeing I am the supervisor inside there, I tell him, ‘stop that go outside!'” the woman related.

She said it was then that her ex boyfriend turned his attention towards her. “He just hold me in my mouth and he start squeezing my mouth,” she stated. “When I try to defend myself, he gave me a back hand. I felt it. And then he hold me again and I was feeling the bone of his hands.”

She said after more ‘back hands’ the officer attempted to kick her in the stomach. “But when he raised his foot, I trip myself with my shoes in a way so that I wouldn’t all on my stomach but on my back,” she stated.

She alleged that when he policeman was leaving,  he said, “I am the law; police versus police.”

She said after the policeman left she went to police headquarters but she was so traumatized that she could not make a complaint and she passed out. “I passed out because I thought I lose my baby…I wasn’t thinking of myself honestly, I was thinking of my baby,” she noted.

She said she was given a medical form by the police which she brought to the hospital on Friday and Saturday night.

She stated that her ex-boyfriend knows that she is pregnant and he knows it is not his child.  “He always telling me ‘I will never leave him, I obsessed over him and whatever,’” she noted.

She went on to say that this is not the first time her ex boyfriend has abused her physically and they have been in court because of it.

“He would disrespect me all the time, call me names and every time we broke up he would put on Facebook and Whatsapp, ‘I use you and I dump you,'” she noted. “And every time he hits me, it is in my head alone.”

She said she is now seeking advice with a view to taking further action.

I am not condoning what happened but some of us too bias. Look at situation is it conincidence that she happened to be speaking ill about her ex boyfriend and he appeared? Wasn’t it intentional that the co worker yelled out loud and pointed to the officer in question so he the officer can know he was bring talked about? When we antagonize someone it is human nature for them to retaliate. Now least we forget when a woman raises her hand to a man she forfeits her right to be s woman and she is clearly stating by actions she wants to be treated equally. How convince that after the embarrassment if having her mouth squeezed she wants to speak out no she should have speaked out during the relationship. And I one being a psychology major and an a female attorney chooses the side of the officer although he didn’t handle himself properly he has a clear cut case. Enough is enough . Men go through abuse they are just to ashamed to report it. Clearly she has been taught a lesson and him while his reputation is being damage has seen that it is not worth it to let small minded inferior people to get the best of us. So young man hold your head high as soon as Dominicans get something else so sit and talk about your name will no longer be in their mouths. Cause this too shall pass. In closing this is just another Rhianna and Chris brown episode. Exaggerated by the media

Despite the fact he was provoked, I am sure part of his training included exercising judgement and tolerance. A well trained personal at all times must demonstrate a high level of professionalism in and out of uniform. It is clear that this individual suffered or may have been exposed to some sort of abuse in his childhood days, and it seems it was over looked during his training. So I am calling on the appropriate authorities to conduct the necessary test on individuals before they are handed su ch powers.

Hello. This Officer is not above the Law and I will tell you what to do. Go to the Police Precinct and file an Assault Report against him. Don’t bring any witness with you rather give them the witnesses name including his mother in that way they can’t say you spoke to the witnesses after the assault . They should arrest and prosecute him . Then get a Civil Attorney and sue the Police Department and the Government who hired him because they should have conducted a proper background investigation before they hired him. The only downside is that my family tax money will be used to settle your claim against the Police Department . We all have must respect and abide by the Laws of the land and if you don’t then you should be prosecuted because none of us are above the Law.

even if he was provokes this gives him no right to touch the woman..there re two sides to the story but it seems he was quite comfortable hitting her and is used to that is why he did not ignore her.

i thought officers are trained to avoid trouble but some re just creating and thinks they re above the law.

    June 18, 2013

It’s clear that the woman provoked him, even when she knew he was right there listening to there discussion, the police officer can win this case with a good defense of temp. Insanity. What he did was wrong but she provoked him… Get the both sides of the story, she even call his work and provoke him the records are there to prove it.

    • Lawyer too
      June 18, 2013

It seems that you are the one that is temporarily insane. Okay records prove that she provoked him but does that give him the right to raise his hands on her? That is the million dollar question. He physically abused her. He has no self control and therefore has no business being a police officer. He MUST be brought to justice!!!

    • June 18, 2013

Hello. You aren’t a Lawyer because you don’t understand basic Criminal Procedure. If he was provoke that don’t give him any right to Assault her. Also for an Insanity Defense the burden of proof is on him. He will tell the Court that he is insane and where does that leave the Police Department who hired him. If she Harassed him on the phone at work then he can file an Aggravated Harassment complaint against her but he still should not assault her.

Whatever the sides, the mistake he made was to go to her work place and beat her up. They were not out in public. As a policeman he should have known better and also disgraced the police force.

Just want to say here, when you young and strong and you feel that you are part of the law.
There is no reason to abuse anyone, and think that will not come back and hunt you.Example #1., is befor the court right now, that was the same attitude that ‘alcapone’ had towards all his women.Woman you have to do what all ‘fed up women do,take heart, plan a course of action, one that will prevent him from comming back after you and the next time he attack, give ‘IT’ to him.Once he start to abuse you he will never stop, unless YOU stop him.So if you love yourself and your unborn child, which is not his,you must take the law in your hand.Act Or You Will Be Killed,by this Monster.

As a women who studied and works with abuse women and children am so disgusted as this is not the first time this has happened, when are women and children going to get the protection they need from these cowards, when is there going to be stiffer penalties to make sure they pay for this crimes and assaults no matter who the hell you are, when??? when will the law makers step up? please someone tell me why our country is so backward, am embarrassed and ashamed.

    • Justice and Truth
      June 18, 2013

In Canada too. Right after he beat her up, she should have telephoned the police who should have gone to her work place to take evidence from her and others who witnessed it. She should not have waited to go to the police station to lodge a complaint against him. There are strong grounds for a law suit and Court case. I hope she does not lose the baby.

      • Justice and Truth
        June 19, 2013

In fact, her co-workers should have telephoned the police. They should not have stood idle viewing the scene and seeing her being beaten up or they should not walk away. If they did, they should have telephoned the police especially if the situation is grave. Too often some people stand by and scrutinize the situation. They either do not consider it or fail to telephone the police. In the meantime the person could be badly injured or killed.
You must do your part as good citizens. Whenever you notice a fight and someone is being beaten up, the first thing you should do is to telephone the police. Do not just stand around. Some will jeer at those involved in the fracas.
I reside in a city where people do not hesitate to telephone the police. In less than no time they will be on the scene. That is their job, to serve and protect. Make use of your rights and obligation as nationals.

There are some situations that could be prevented. As we will say and how often, if only I knew I would have avoided that situation.
To begin with she was discussing him with co-workers, in their place of employ. This is not an appropriate place to discuss such personal matters. What type of business enterprise is this that they were discussing such a matter rather than working? Where was the boss?
Yes! Considering how some people could speak loudly, do not care what they say and who is listening, the mother may have heard and telephoned her son who came to the establishment (speculating).
When one of the co-workers saw him, he exclaimed, “This is the man they were talking about.” What a thing to say? He was not discreet to hold his tongue and pretend he did not hear or know anything. What type of person is he? This got the Cop angrier that he was being discussed.
The ex-boyfriend who is a Cop commenced beating on her. He was totally wrong to hit her which, today as Dominicans have adopted the word from specifically those progressive countries, refer to it as abuse. This is more than and worst than abuse. It is hitting and beating her up in order to injure her, if not kill her. Then saying it is Cop VS Cop. What a statement to make, as a Cop. He could be suspended from work or dismissed. He used his police power to attack the woman and to make such a statement.
Does he mean because he is a Cop he cannot be arrested and charged and even imprisoned if found guilty, which he is for going on the premises and attacking her? He also trespassed. If he had no official police reasons to be on the premises, he had no right to be there. I do think he jeopardized his position.
It is left to her if she wishes to lay charges. Some women lay charges and then withdraw them. Let us see what she will do.
One more thing, she should have no affiliation with him. He should be given a restraining order. Some do not adhere to it. The result of which could end up sadly, if you know what I mean.
This woman should pray to God for protection. I hope she does not lose the baby. When women are carrying an unborn baby, this is the time they should live a happy and peaceful life. If the baby is born healthily, who knows, this incident while in the mother’s womb could affect the child’s mentality. I hoped that she saw a doctor and that the doctor examined the condition of the baby in her womb and continues to monitor it as well as her health. Good luck mother-to-be.

Technically, he fought and beat-up two people. The woman and the un-born Child. Serious that. If that guy doesn’t spend some time in jail and lose his job; they may as well close down the court house, and let these “Margistrate” find some construction work to do. We all have heard and witnessed that children grow up into adults living what they learn. As a child growing up this poor man must have seen that abuse in his very home. The story says his mother works at the same establishment, who knows, it may just be her that called him to come over if she overheard the group talking. You have to be a ruthless to attack a pregnant woman.
Remember, in life what goes around, comes around.

You need to know when enough is enough. You say “every time we broke up he would ……….”
The man has no right to abuse you but I think he was deliberately provoked by your co-worker pointing a finger at him and saying this is the man you all were talking about. I think you should see a lawyer for further court action instead of going to the media. You have witnesses. The media and public only makes the matter worst. When the court rules it must be exposed. If things have been that bad you should be taking serious action instead of seeking advice. Some times people take their domestic matters public and later is back together again. I hope that does not happen to you.

We must get the courage to say no to these men because after all is said and done, they are very selfish and care about no one but themselves. Ladies, there are good men out there. Get out of these one way relationships and give the genuine gentlemen a chance. You are worth much more than that.

It is interesting how we all are so quick to condem. If the guy did as the young lady said he should feel the full arm of the law.

However, she doesn’t want an investigation because she is so scared but has spoken to the media. There is to sides to a story and I am sure the young man has his and must be given the oportunity before we condem him.

Ladies do abuse men also and this is now prevalent in our society.

He is a man who happens to be a police officer. The alleged incident if it turns out to be true like all the other men who abused their woman and the woman who abused their men should all face the full force of the Law. Dominicans there are always three sides to any story.{Wait smarty I am not saying he had a right to assault his Ex: girlfriend} before some of you go ballistic.} All I am saying he is not above the Law and should be dealt with if the evidence support the alleged victim`s claim. Let me see if there is some who do not understand that simple way of understanding things.

Hello folks, it’s obvious that you want to comment on this issue with compassion, but please take your time to write proper constructive sentences. We are not the only nationality to view this site and this looks bad for us. Thank you folks.
On the flip side I’m altogether against women abuse by men. I’m a former SSU member and its a shame on the Discipline that we have worked so hard to maintain let alone the integrity of the entire police force. The officer in question should be suspended without pay and a mandatory anger management rehab should be enforced. As to how long the suspension, should be to the discretion of the investigation process. Make an example of this situation. Men please respect a woman’s right to choose whom ever she likes.

A man has NO rights to use his hands or feet or head in a manner to bring unwarranted pain on a woman!!!!!!! Enough is Enough. Sisters keep silence No more

I will stand by you in This fight against abuse

Lets petition the government to build a special holding facility for all woman abusers

Now is the time to speak out!!!!!!!

If you remain tight lipped the abuse will continue until your last breath

The abuse started somewhere and so the Silence must end somewhere and that somewhere is NOW!!!!!!!

How could you be a former police officer and write such crap? you have already judged the young man. No wonder you said a former ssu member. If only you had gone to court prior to writing such nonsense, you would’ve known about “presumption of innocence” Stop jumping the gun and let’s hear what the other side has to say.

He is a police officer and his job is to ‘serve and protect’ and his is endangering you and your unborn child. Clearly, he is not doing that.

NO one is over the law. Governemnt and leader and the people of the land is to follow the laws.

He is to big for his breaches. I know there are good standing police officers in Dominica who take their job seriously. And I think the commissioner would be trying to reduce corruption in the force.

Most members of the police force are very abusive and Dominica is a classic example of the way people are being brutalized in some of the African Republics. This incident is just a tip of the iceberg.

  67. June 17, 2013

Please note, these types of situations are not the exception in Dominica, but the rule because it has been happening for a very long time without any form of support or encouragement for the victims. Many women suffered abuse and continue to suffer abuse from their husbands/boyfriends and are afraid to leave because it became a societal norm. In fact, many believe the fallacy that unless a man beat you, he doesn’t love you; as such, they continue to subject themselves to these abusive desperados. Also, in majority of the cases, the women relied heavily upon men for financial support and with no other source of income/sustenance, they latched on to these losers thinking they have no other option and that serves as an entrapment. Moreover, even if they had the courage to report or seek help, to who would they run seeing that those who are paid and took an oath to protect the people are abusers too?

Only recently some women have developed the courage to do something about these types of situations since they are becoming more and more independent and wiser as the world shrinks into a global village and technology advances. With more access to knowledge and information, Dominican women are speaking out more. Nevertheless, there is still much to be done to protect our women from these calamities and to foster self-esteem and value in our young women from a very early age- both at home and on a national level.

Since the laws of the land ignore such behavior, parents, especially mothers should take a more preventive approach by raising a generation of strong, self-confident and decent young women who will not adopt the mindset of their predecessors; but, will give themselves to education, and walk in integrity and dignity- A courageous generation who will reach for the skies, and not be enslaved with chains of despondency; thus breaking the pattern of being a prey to the losers who prowl around looking to share their misery.

I really hope the law will side with the woman and make this guy an example to all those little boys who refuse to grow out of their diapers and throw tantrums because their brain cells are not developed to civilly handle domestic situations.

  68. June 17, 2013

My Sister, I feel sorry for you. But why didn’t you give that statement to the police instead of DNO? If you say one wrong thing on DNO that may be self incriminatory. “I was feeling the bone of his hand.” The hand has many many bones. Which bone did you feel? People, people, people, I’m no Lawyer myself! but there are reasons why the guilty walk free. The evidence and statements from the victims are for the most part ‘very weak.’ We must seek counsel before we talk and over-talk.

You “passed out” when you got to the police station. Fine! but why did you continue by saying that you were thinking of the baby that’s why you “passed-out? what kind of passed-out is that? you were at the right place to give a statement about the abuser and you “passing out,” and the reason for your passing out was, you were thinking of the baby. So, you didn’t “pass-out” because you could no longer think, or you were badly beaten and could no longer bear yourself up. you are actually saying that you know what made you pass-out, and you knew when you “passed-out.” You are arming the the abuser’s counsel. I would love to see this guy locked-up for many years. Hope you have a lawyer. Cause, on your own you are a piece of cake.

From this story it appears as if this police officer has anger management problems. He should seek professional help before he kills someone or someone kills him. Love is not supposed to hurt. What were the other people doing while he allegedly atacked the oung lady? What if her brother, a male member of her family, or the person she is pregnant b came by about the same time? That is a conducive and volatile situation for world war 3.

Word to the wise people keep your hands to your sides and learn reasonable conflict resolution. There is too often the tendency to strike the weaker vessel. It is a question of power and only coward men fight women.

In that space of time someone should have called the police who should have responded promptly and arrested him on the spot. Hmmmmm something does not add up!!!

And I think one of those eyewitnesses should come out and reveal his name. If they do not -they are saying by their actions that he was right to do what he did. In fact this should have been reported and he should have already been behind bars. You mean from since last Friday? We are not yet serious about stopping abuse. Somebody should say something-reveal his name and have him arrested, stripped of his uniform and expelled from the force.

When people witness things like that, by now his name and all should be in the media and nobody should feel threatened if they talk. That is how it should. And by the way she even said that they had gone to court over this same abuse before?

What!!! something is definitely wrong with our system but here is a chance to make it right. To those in authority responsible -Please do something about this because it is bad publicity for law enforcement!!!

you are going to stand up for a man who hits women, including pregnant ones. it doesn’t matter what she does on Facebook, his actions could never be justified. but you are the typical women who would betray a sister in a time of instability. this could happen to you as well.

so even if she has facebook comments bout him doesn’t mean he has to back slap and kick her like a dog… he’a an officer of the law and he needs to act like it, the police force should suspend him for layin his hand on a woman.

Why do some people and most of them feel they must place comments on everything and everybody on Face Book for the entire world to read? What does this prove and rectify? Nothing! It just makes matters worse. When will those people learn a lesson? Keep your personal and private affairs from Face Book! They are solely gossip and malicious ones. Not everyone is interested in reading them.

Hi nnnnn. It is people like you that cause men to behave like that. I do not care whether there is hatred or friction between them. • June 17, 2013

You are deceived. There is no excuse for a man to treat a pregnant woman that way. In fact, he is a little, spineless boy who can’t express his emotions in any other way than to hit a woman.

Why didn’t he find his match? As an officer I am sure he can’t approach the “drug lords” in Dominica with such aggression because he is no match. In fact, I’m sure When he sees these aggressive men, he mills around like a little girl and pee in his pants. Only toward a woman can he behave so cowardly. He should be ashamed to call himself a man, let alone a police officer, to have allowed “words” to control his emotions. This makes me want to throw up.

I do think that it is creating a scandal, spreading propaganda about people and also tarnishing their names by writing about personal affairs on Face Book. This should not be allowed.
As I have stated, we reside in a scandalous age and some people do not possess the class and dignity to refrain from writing about such matters on Face Book. They should be considerate of the feelings of others and preserving their good names including their personal affairs from users of Face Book, most of whom they do not know. It is primarily a Christian act to practice. For Dominicans who are Christians, the majority of whom are practicing ones at that, it is primarily a Christian act to practice. God is taking note.

Brathwait, you re-post the story we, it said her EX-BOYFRIEND which part in that word you don’t understand? Ex or Boyfriend??

Okay here is the logic, they are not in a relationship any more hence the word EX, she has moved on and have a new boyfriend who got her pregnant….

It is time that EX Boyfriend move on and get himself a new girlfriend too…. If she was my Girl friend he could be big like a house i can tell you when i finish with him is mal they will say that do him…….. I making Crabs walk in his stomach……

DNO if there is truth in the story why are the names held back?? I want to know the man because if i see him around my sister i can take care of him once and for all!!!!!

This is an excellent question. Why did they give you thumbs down? I surmise since she refers to him as her ex-boyfriend, they may have broken up and she has another boyfriend by whom she got pregnant. I do not know why they should continue to have any interaction especially that she stated he abused her. Any man who could abuse a woman and consistently so does not love her. When will those women who are abused comprehend that and steer clear of such a relationship which, in the long run could get them killed?

Tell him carry on my girl. Tell him monitor the trend of the police officers who abuse people especially their mates. Nowadays some drinking rum only, some cannot walk properly, some of them losing skin on hands. A warning to the abusers. Girlfriend the last laugh will be yours, I am enjoying mine. I just pray that your baby is fine. I had a very similar experience.

What’s sad and scary is that he’ll probably get just a slap on the wrist by the justice system and he’ll go in to abuse the next woman and the next. Dominica NEEDS to adopt a zero-tolerance policy towards abuse. Don’t wait until someone is dead before stricter rules are put into place. I commend her for being brave enough to come forward. It’s DOES take courage, especially when you know the abuser can get to you again. Take that man OFF THE STREETS! Lock him up so he doesn’t hurt another female… or anyone else for that matter.
