Castle Bruce native gives back

Dr. Augustus Valmond

From a very early age he dreamt of becoming a doctor and after migrating to the US and fulfilling that dream, Dr. Augustus Valmond has resolved that it is his civic responsibility to give back to his community of Castle Bruce.

With that in mind he decided to launch the Dr. Augustus Valmond Scholarship which will be awarded annually to two deserving students from the Castle Bruce Primary School entering the Castle Bruce Secondary School.

The scholarship will be granted on the basis of exceptional academic performance and financial need.

It will continue throughout the students’ five years of high school providing that they maintain satisfactory academic performance and general deportment.

Dr. Valmond was born in Castle Bruce and attended the Castle Bruce Primary School.  He obtained a Government Scholarship (5th place) and then went on to attend the Dominica Grammar School, where he excelled academically.

He migrated to the United States and graduated from Howard University with a Doctor of Medicine Degree.

His training in internal Medicine and Nephrology was completed at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New York. Nephrology is a branch of internal medicine and pediatrics dealing with the study of the function and diseases of the kidney.

Today, he practices General Internal Medicine and Nephrology in Manhattan, New York.

The value of the scholarships will be equivalent to that awarded by the government of Dominica and will take effect in January 2013 at the beginning of the second term.

The following five persons will serve on the Dr. Augustus Valmond Scholarship Committee:

Jacqueline Roberts  –  Chairperson (Manager – Castle Bruce Credit Union)
Austelle Lockhart – Vice Chair (Projects Officer – RCP Program
Cleve Edwards – Member (Teacher – Castle Bruce Secondary School)
Lorna Prevost-Stephens – Member (Economist – Government of Dominica)
Loreen Bannis-Roberts – Member (Liason Officer, Diaspora Affairs)
Augustus Valmond – Nephrologist/Sponsor

The application forms will be available at the Castle Bruce Credit Union and the Castle Bruce Village Council Office.

Sometimes am confused about the posture taken by ROSEAU VALLEY. It seems that s/he sounds much better when there is no bashing of the government or involvement in seriously flawed legalities and subjective politics.

I do hope that this new approach continues.

Its great to see that you can so politely applaud progressive moves. We expect the same to be done on the many projects by this administration ; yet we expect you to provide an ojective critique of them where necessary.

Great initiative Dr. Valmond. May Jah continue to guide and bless you as embark on your career.

Your family and community should be very proud of you. While many continue to sit on the side and complain, you have stepped up to the plate unlike so many C/Brucians in foreign who have actually become very successful. I sincerely hope that those in places with a large C/Brice population like Houston, Texas and Boston, Mass who have and continue to live the American dream will stop all the talk and politicking and do a little more. C/Bruce is crying out for their help.

    Assertive, NOT Agressive!

    • November 21, 2012

you self need help, and not castle bruce alone that need help, all over the world need help right now.

  13. A very good deed
    November 21, 2012

    Congratulations Dr.Valmond!
Giving back sure is a good thing. Those who are on the ground handling the affairs must be sure that the students who receive these gifts MUST come from families that financially need the help for their children and NOT to those who can afford to send their children to high school with no financial strain. I’m sure they will do the right thing. What a wonderful thing to do. May God reachly bless the Doctor and his family.

I hope this bold move opens the door to other able community members in the diaspora to contributed towards the development of our lovely community. congratulations again and thank you. on the other hand though, i do hope that the person on the committee will be subjective in their selection of children to be awarded. FIRST OFF CONGRATULATION!IT IS VERY NICE THAT U GAVE BACK TO UR COMMUNITY, BUT MY OPINION IS THAT U SHOULD GIVE BACK TO ALL OF DOMINICA. AFTER RECEIVING UR DOCTORATE U SHOULD HAVE RETURN TO DOMINICA AND GIVE UR SERVICE. AMERICA HAVE ENOUGH DOCTORS WHO DOES THE SAME THING THAT U DO.DOMINICA NEEDS DOCTORS LIKE U. BUT MY OPINION AGAIN I THINK IS A MONEY THING

@ Proud Dominican Oh is a Doctorate aka Phd he has? I thought he was an MD!!

2>What does he OWE all of Dominica? He should have returned did you and all of Dominica finance his studies? will you be paying off his loans? Is he under any obligation to do this or should you and every single one of us be thankful he is touching the lives of people from his community?

I have major issues with some of you Dominicans who feel that people owe you something after they toil and build a life for themselves, whereas those who milked the cow, and feasted on wine and cheese of Dominica are not being forced to return to give back what they OWE Dominica.

I”m 1000% behind you on that one. This person has the unmitigated gall and brazen balls of an ox to want to chastise the man as if he owes them and Dominica something. Sometimes our people are just too out of place.

Boy god give yu, you find you can give back to your community, do that eh. We went out there on our own, we never asked for any kind of handouts, we worked hard and achieved our degrees on our own, while others were asleep we were working, now god give us, we giving back…. we doh want no medals.

how can u tell the man what to do? it’s his choice where he wants to practice and I’m sure he has his personal convictions as to why. At least, he is gving back. It may not be what u want, but he has taken a step in efforts to be grateful to his country. what are u doing or what have u done lately. negative, pessimistic ppl. always take a good situation and try to find bad in it.

Though i am not in full support of this committee because in my OPINION a lack of heterogeneity may exist given their predilection to be biased in certain aspects where choice may be concerned. However the efforts of Mr.Valmond must be commend and as a village we hope that this grows into a solid foundation as we seek to move this village forward and gain back the respect we once had as a community. This is also a call to the many people from castle Bruce who have moved on to become successful professionals in life to turn back and stretch a hand in anyway possible to help the community that cultured them in one way or the other. As a community lets be grateful to Mr.Valmond as well as the other persons who are there with us everyday silently working hard to ensure that in all aspects our community is propelled in the right direction. Word of caution to Mr. Valmond,do your best for people and don’t mix your charity with politics.

LOL hold on, am I the only one who properly read Mr. Alfred’s comment. He obviously stated that this was his OPINION, then he commended Dr. Valmond for the good gesture and asked others to follow suit, then he cautioned Dr. Valmond about political influence. Yall should know better by now that for many years, certain projects undertaken by the government, regardless of which government it was, has had a certain degree of political influence. The man was simply cautioning the good doctor against that

      November 21, 2012

my brother I am in full agreement with you. Let me say hats off to Dr. Valmond. I am also wondering where the heck did they come up with this committee from ? We know who these people are and we know the things they have done and the things they are capable of doing. we know of the way some of these people on this committee have silently and some actively perpetuated the culture of victimising people and their children who do not support the RED PARTY. Dr. Valmond may not know of this but we do. And may i ask why is Loreen Bannis Roberts on the committee when she doesn’t live in dominica? Is she going to return home every time the occasion comes to select a student? But we are watching you guys very closely and make no mistakes about it we will be calling evil by its name every time it raises its ugly head enuff is enuff and it is time the people of God stand and speak out against any evil or wickedness in this village. Jah Bless u Augustus! Thought provoking comment Mr Hilroy alfred. Never stop speaking the things God has ordered you to speak.
