Classroom reunion for Dominican siblings

Amy and Daryl Durand

A brother and sister from Dominica, who are both serving in the Royal Navy, have been reunited in the classroom at HMS Raleigh, Cornwall, UK.

Leading Logisticians (LLogs) Daryl and Amy Durand hail from Bath Estate.  With one foot on the promotion ladder, the siblings were selected for a five-week training course at the Defence Maritime Logistics School to prepare them for their advanced role.

Daryl and Amy serve in the Royal Navy as supply chain specialists and as such are responsible for ordering and storing millions of pounds worth of equipment, from engineering parts to stationery, to ensure that their ship or unit has everything it needs to operate.

Daryl, aged 27, said:  “It’s good to have each other here to support and help prepare for the exams. The course is really challenging, but we are coping.   She is my baby sister so I feel like I’m looking after her.”

Amy, aged 24, disagrees. “It’s more like I’m looking after him.  We both live in Portsmouth, but during the week we are working and at weekends we are busy doing our own things, so it’s nice to have some time together here, particularly as when we finish the course Daryl will be deploying for about seven months,” she said.

Daryl was first to join the Royal Navy in 2005.  He previously worked as a quantity and land surveyor and as a hardware store salesman.  He says he joined the Service to travel, gain experience and further his qualifications.  He is currently enrolled on an Open University course studying accounting and book-keeping.  Since joining the Royal Navy, Daryl has served on two warships and ashore in Portsmouth and Yeovil.  He is currently serving on HMS Dragon, one of the Royal Navy’s new Type 45 destroyers, which recently left Portsmouth for her first operational deployment to the Middle East.

Inspired by her brother, Amy joined the Royal Navy in 2008 and is a keen sportswoman having represented the Royal Navy at basketball.  She also plays rugby, netball and swimming.  Prior to joining the Service, Amy worked as a receptionist.  Like her brother, she has also signed up for an Open University course and is currently studying law.  Amy has an ambitions to transfer to the Royal Navy Officer Corps and become a logistics officer, working in the Naval legal department.  She is currently serving at the Royal Navy Air Station, Yeovilton, and has previously served at sea on board HMS Kent and ashore in Portsmouth.

Daryl is married to Tracy and has a son, Jayden, aged 2.  Amy has a long-term partner, David, who is also serving in the Royal Navy.  Despite making their home in Portsmouth, UK, the siblings try to get back to their home country as often as possible to see their parents, Celina and Robertson, and brother Jamal, aged 18, who is interested in joining the Royal Navy.

When they deport those criminals and send them back alyou complaining. when our people stay on the positive track and our young people do good things alyou still complaining. Don’t know how to please DOMINICANS. You people are just a nation full of ENVY. Sometimes I feel ashame to be a Dominican when I read all these negative comments.

    April 2, 2013

Why won’t we Dominicans learn to appreciate and encourage our fellow brothers and sisters when they do something worthwhile? Why are we so quick to cast some sarcastic remark? ooooohhhhh
    CONGRATS to Brother and Sister!!!
I join with the PROUD Commenter and so I am DOUBLE PROUD.

It is all because of the “crabs in a barrel” syndrome. This is one reason i stay far from Dominicans when i travel.

This younger generation does not cherrish their privacy. The have no compunction to expose every facet of their lives to the world. Their pictures are all over the internet and the moment they do anything, they feel the need to tell the world. In short this generation is very narcissistic.

      To each his/her own.

    • April 3, 2013

Hello don’t be confused rather open your mind. Now it’s news to us because we a proud to hear that two of our citizens are doing things to better themselves. Maybe one day they can return and used their expertise to help our country . Thanks.

I would agree if they did not post your story. We need a few stories of people with class. That comment was totally not necessary. Sometimes we just need to know when to STFU. SMH @ we Dominicans.
