Colihaut student excels at UWI

Baptiste is no stranger to excellence

Melvyn Baptiste, a son of the community of Colihaut has shown his dedication and commitment to his personal development and by extension his family and country.

In October, Baptiste graduated as one of the top students at the Universty of the West Indies, St Augustine Campus with a final GAP of 4.02.

He graduated with First Class Honors with a BSc in Economics and a minor in Finance Economics. He also received prizes for being the most outstanding student in Industral Economics and achieving the highest grades in all level two and three courses in his program.

He was nominated to be a recipient of the Charles M. Kennedy Prize, one of the most sought after awards at UWI. Only one student out of the thousands from all three major campuses of UWI is chosen for this prize.

Baptiste is no stranger to excellence.

He graduated from the Dominica State College in 2009 as Top Agriculture Student, Top Student of the Faculty of Applied Arts and Technology, Most Outstanding Student of the Faculty of Arts & Technology and recipient of the National Performance Award from the Government of Dominica. He went on to receive Distinctions in Principals of Tropical Agriculture, Crop Husbandry and Animal Husbandry from City and Guilds.

Baptiste is not all about work and no play and he continued to demonstrate his love for country when he accepted the post of Association President of the Dominican Students Association of Trinidad & Tobago.

Together with the committee and members, he led the association to grab, for the first time ever, the prize of Island Association of the Year for Academic Year 2013/2014.

Baptiste is currently pursuing a Masters in Economics at the UWI St. Augustine Campus and is interested in specializing in Agricultural Economics. His ultimate goal is to contribute actively and in a meaningful way to achieving high levels of food safety and security in Dominica and the Caribbean Region by extension.

He thanks God and to all who have invested in his educational endeavors including family, friends and sponsors.

He said hard work and perseverance are instrumental in realizing one’s goals.

You deserve congratulations for your excellent achievement. You have projected that, “Yes you can do it, study and graduate with honors.” This means, above all you took your studies seriously.
I hope especially Dominican youths take note. The saying, “Anything we want to do, once we make up our mind, we can do it.” Determination wins in the end.
Your general family must be elated. Hope after you have completed your studies, you return to Dominica. I state this only, “if you so wish.” The choice is yours. Nevertheless, Dominica is need of her intelligent and progressive young graduates to help build it further.
God bless you as you continue to study and give your all to your future undertakings! Keep well and safe!

‘ hard work and perseverance are instrumental in realizing one’s goals”. this is so true my brother. such a simple and innocuous piece of truth that it could well slip many of us especially in the period in which live now..everybody wants it now. we like to live in the fast lane not realizing that he who put in the time and the effort is he /she who will succeed…. congratulations and much more success in your future endeavors !

Well done, however get some work experience under your belt before a masters will allow you to contribute more to your masters and apply it in a better way. There is a risk that you may become too academic (book smart)

Too many academics in DA struggle to apply what they have learnt because of the way in which our education system and culture doesn’t encourage lateral thinking.

When our people does well we do not always have to dabble it with our political connotations…. Let’s be objective in our thinking and beliefs…… Come on Man…
Dominica is ours to build Irrespective of Which Government is in Power…

In light of this let me congratulate Mr. Baptiste on His achievements.. Well Done and YAHWEH Bless you

I never mentioned anything about Government in Power or politics.. You see how we think and reason. Where does that stem from?? Education? hmmmmm Our Culture needs to be saved.

Academia is only one aspect of education and i say yes I applaud the young man but I also hope he is equipped with all the skills required to be a leader and progress through life.. We need that in DA more than academia right now!
