Community advocate tells of trials, successes

Gloria Walsh

Community advocate from Silver lake and Bath Estate, Gloria Walsh has shared her struggles and triumphs with women from all walks of life in an effort to strengthen them and to put greater faith in God.

She told the story her life at the fourth Phenomenal Women Symposium on Saturday.

Walsh, a CIBC Unsung Hero (2011), is from Newtown but is now living in Bath Estate with her four children.

She is also one of the founding members and Director of the ‘Love one Teach one Foundation Inc.’ a registered non-profit voluntary organization which consists of a youth support program, an after school program, annual summer school and an annual etiquette dinner.

She is a host of a kid’s radio program and along with others are catering for over 40 young people enrolled in her foundation’s program.

Walsh described her journey as one of‘trials and tribulations’ and said faith without passion is like “soda water without the sparkle.”

She said one of the major projects she had undertaken was a clean-up campaign in 2008 in her community. “It was a joy to see every one working together to get this going,” he said.

She described 2011 was described as a year of ‘a mixture of laughter and tears’.

“The year 2011 I lost my grandmother who was ailing with cancer, around the Christmas season, and I had a Christmas party for over a hundred children; so I had to energize and keep focused. And I had to deal with the murder of the children’s father as well,” Walsh recalled.

According to her she has plans to extend her foundation’s programs into “a few other areas.”

“At the moment works are on the way in the Kalinago Territory for a group 47 children in an after school program by month end…there is help for the elderly … we are putting together a mentorship program with a young Christian group from around Dominica,” she stated.

Walsh said daily devotions and faith are her only ways of surviving with the knowledge that “I am doing this for a purpose despite having no steady monthly salary to rely on.”

You are indeed a blessing Gloria, not many persons in Dominica have that passion you share and serve your community, it no surprise that your name is Gloria, the Glory belongs to God, but he needs hands and feet to fulfill his plan and his purpose in the earth, and you are certainly chosen in this regard.
I cannot help but to encourage you to persevere in that vain, knowing that whatever you do, you do it all in the name of the Lord. I speak a blessing on you that you trod new territories and what will come from you will be unprecedented and as I SAID EARLIER THE GLORY IS HIS, BUT A I an indeed proud to learn and read of your efforts in helping people especially the underpriviledge and the down trodden.

God bless you and all your efforts. The things done for Christ alone will last!!!

Praise and blessings to Miss Walsh. I am a Dominican living overseas. Anything to uplift Dominica I am there to support. I support DADA, when they had the group that Fitzroy was in, I supported. When I come to Dominica, I support all locally grown food and I buy a lot of Dominica’s products to back to friends who do not know about Dominica.

If all the ministers in Government would take a portion of their salary, and contribute to this young women’s project, Dominica will be surely blessed. The Bible said, “It is more profitable to give than to receive”. Not how much u give, but if u give a little with a pure heart, the Lord will add the blessing. I am personally coming to look for this extraordinary human being, who has very little, and is making so much impact in human being lives, especially the less fortunate, when I come to Dominica this year.

God has blessed me in the USA, and I think I definitely will make a contribution. These are the stories we love and should take a page from her book. Dominica belong to all of us. We have to try to leave a good foundation, and example for our children. We have to have fun, but after the fun is all over, what next? All the people in Government should take a page from he book too.

God bless you young lady and all Dominicans. I am definitely putting some extra in my barrel for this young lady. We all have to lead by example. The future of Dominica is in our hands take it or leave it. BLESSINGS!!!

Imagine what she could accomplish of she knew that at the end of the month she would have helped so many people and still able to help herself with a salary. To survive here without a staedy salary is xxxxxxxxxxxx. To assist your community the way she has is more than a passion. It is a vocation. Will she be Dominica’s own “Mother Theresa”. Somebody from the business community please listen to her and help her stay alive to continue doing what she knows to do best – helping the less fortunate among us.
