Sherwin James poses with his awards

Pichelin-born Sherwin E. James, has been recognized at the 2013 Annual Awards Program for Academic Advising at the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) Annual Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah for outstanding service and leadership.

At the function he was presented with the 2013 Commission and Interest Group (CIG) Service Award.

The CIG Service Award is presented to a NACADA member who has provided outstanding service, leadership, and commitment to a specific commission, interest group, cluster or the CIG Division.

James was also presented with a Certificate of Appreciation for his leadership and service to NACADA for his role as chair of the Advising Student Athletes Commission from 2011 through 2013.

He is employed as the College of Business professional academic advisor and major mentor coordinator at Clayton State University.

The NACADA Annual Awards Program honors individuals and institutions making significant contributions to the field of academic advising. The program has grown to honor recipients on an international level.

James was born in the village of Pichelin and lived there until moving to the US in 1999.

He is a recognized and highly decorated Grand Bay Secondary School (now known as Pierre Charles Secondary School) track and field athlete.

After high school, he attended the Clifton Dupigny Community College (Technical Division). He then spent a year at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri but left when the University of Idaho offered him a track and field scholarship.

While at Idaho, he represented Dominica in the 200-meters at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.

James has a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Management and Human Resources and a Master’s Degree in Education, with a concentration in Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Idaho.

He is currently the Vice President of the Dominica Atlanta Cultural Association (DACA), in Georgia.

James, his wife Tawanna, and their four (4) year old son, Tashern, live in Stone Mountain, Georgia.
