Millicent Alfred, who comes from the village of Marigot, has received a Doctorate in Nursing Practice (DNP) from Pace University in New York.

The DNP is a three-year program and Dr. Alfred successfully completed her manuscript in “Cultural barriers to diet Adherence in the Latino population with obesity” and her research project on “The effectiveness of culturally – Focused Interventions in Increasing Satisfaction of Hospitalized Adult Asian Patients: A Systematic Review.”

The DNP at Pace University is grounded in three central elements that forms its foundation. These three elements are cultural sensitivity and competence, evidenced based practice and primary healthcare, which are all directed towards patient safety and positive outcome of care.

Dr. Alfred has successfully published a nursing article in the Clinical Advisor on “Preventing Teenage Pregnancy in the Underserved Communities” in April 2013, and co-authored a research protocol on “The Effectiveness of Culturally Focused Interventions in Increasing Satisfaction of Hospitalized Adult Asian Patient : A Systematic Review Protocol” which was published with the Joanna Briggs Institute in Australia.

As a former Princess Margaret Hospital trained nurse, she hopes that other Dominican nurses will aspire to attain their highest level of nursing education.

Alfred states, that the DNP journey was long, intense and difficult but well structured.

She said was guided by the quote from H. Longfellow, “The heights by great men reached and kept were not attained by sudden flight but they while their companions slept, were toiling upwards in the night.”

This, she states, was her motto for the past three years.

Dr. Alfred is the daughter of Mrs. Bowen Alfred. She attended primary school in Marigot, then the Convent High School.

She began her nursing career at Princess Margaret Hospital, and is very thankful for this, because this training was the foundation of her future career.

Upon migrating to the US, she obtained her Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Masters in Nursing Science and Family Nurse Practitioner from Pace University.

She was one of 19 graduates from the DNP programme at the Graduate Commencement Ceremony in May.

Congratulations! Another daughter of the soil excelled in her studies and of course graduated with honors. This time, obtaining a doctorate in nursing. You could work anywhere in the world. I cannot see you being out of a job for life.
I wish you all the best.
We need to read about their achievements. This should also motivate the youths to make good use of their student days and strive for higher heights.
I do think students should be informed of their achievements. This will encourage them and prod them on to be diligent students.
    Thank you DNO!

Congrats but it look like is only me that came to america , and excelled in my field of study, graduated with honors e.t.c and never broadcast it to dominicans. I am wondering if they are just trying to show off. No personal attack , but it’s just my observation. Again, i am not being ignorant or anything it’s just something to think about. Now i hope she gets the opportunity to stay here , because i don’t know where in da she is going to work, unless she opens her own office or hospital.

It depends how long ago you graduated. If it was prior to internet, few in the public arena would have known of your achievement. If so, you are not alone.
Consider today, we have DNO and probably other Media. They give Dominicans who graduated overseas the exposure that we read of. We are happy to know about them.
So far there is no indication that she (said) she will return to D/ca to work. If so, a new position may have to be established for her.
Most graduates decide not to return to work in D/ca and for some years. With her credentials, I wonder if she will return to work in D/ca. We do know there are many more job opportunities for them in those countries based on their qualifications.

Many of us nurses have DNP behind our names and are involved in the nursing education department. In most states a doctorate us required to teach. Some complete their doctorate for personal achievement. Most of all it’s the highest degree for us as nurses and quite an accomplishment.

Hater maybe if u read my comment , and was able to comprehend what i said, you won’t call me a hater. real facts should show you how to respond to a comment . It is not a personal attack. Lighten up! It’s not that serious. Don’t let your pressure reach the rock and roll point.

Although you have a point here, did she write this herself? It could have been done by someone else who was proud of her achievements. I think it is a good thing to accentuate the positive, especially when women can demonstrate they can challenge the odds stacked against them.

      Congrats Dr.

Couldn’t agree with you more. Some Dominicans are just too boaster especially with those part-time dime a dozen doctorates in nursing that qualifies them to be nothing more than a glorified nurse.
