Former House Speaker Ossie Symes has died.
According to reports he died at Princess Magaret Hospital last night after a brief illness.
He served as House Speaker from 1995-2000 during the reign of the Edison James-led United Workers Party Government.

Ossie was a good man…he allowed me to use his gym in Emlshall and tought me to be proud as human being…I speak of him all the time, the man that allowed to walk into his gym and use it thank you and all the best to family you will be missed.

Although best known for his stint as speaker of the house, Outside of politics, Ossie (known affectionately to many of his friends as “Sam Bass” a famous movie character), was a diligent civil servant and also excelled at sports, particularly cricket.
He also provided cricket and football commentaries in the late sixties and early seventies.
So sorry to hear of his passing…sympathies to his family.
