Gov’t breaks silence on Tommy Lee Sparta

The government on Monday afternoon broke its silence concerning Jamaican dancehall artiste, Tommy Lee Sparta, and the denial of entry into Dominica.

Since the artiste was denied entry and arrested on Sunday afternoon many Dominicans had been left to wonder what was the real reason for such actions.

In a brief statement on Monday afternoon, the ministry of national security said this was done because of security concerns.

“Pursuant to advice received, government had concerns for public safety,” the statement said. “The decision to deny entry was intended as a preemptive action and also to provide an opportunity to exhaust all efforts to clarify information received.”

The artiste, whose real name is Leroy Russel, was stopped at the Melville Hall Airport on Sunday afternoon.

He was set to perform at a concert in Portsmouth on Sunday night.

He was subsequently arrested and taken to the Marigot Police Station.

On Monday, at around 1:30 pm, he was taken to the Marigot Hospital suffering from blood clots and spasms to his legs.

Main organizer of the concert, Cabral Douglas, told DNO on Monday afternoon that Tommy Lee will be deported from Dominica at around 6:30 pm on a LIAT flight.

The flight will take him to Barbados, then to Trinidad and onwards to Jamaica.

He described the entire matter as “disturbing to all civilized people.”

Did our people really restricted this man entry because he worships the devil? If so, then this is ridiculous, childish, and very STUPID. I’ve notice from our own people, it’s a “let me do and you cannot do”. So many of our people worship the devil. From cult days, when students were afraid to walk the streets after 6pm. PLEASE! GROW UP!!!….I hope when som of our people are deported from OTHER COUNTRIES, they handle it this way,and make sure it is posted. Let this guy do his concert. He wouldn’t influence the youth anymore than he already has since you cannot control what they watch and listen. If their parents allow them LET IT BE. Shoot!!!! What are you all going to turn into NORTH KOREA SOON??? HYPOCRITES!!!!!!

      You are right.
Like another past Jamaican artist sang… “emancipate yourselves from mental slavery, only ourselves can free our minds…” I’m not comparing the two, it just reminded me. Religion used as chains for the brain, -again. That shouldn’t happen anymore.
Why did he have bloodclots and spasms anyway?

Mi evil so till Satan seh fi build
You run to di pastor mi shoot up di church

U too sot! the man land, they tell him go back on his plane, his first mistake, he refused… so they arrested him, obviously the intention was not to arrest him, their were no facilities to house him so he spent the night in lovely Marigot, he visited the police station, then the hospital and then airport… simple. what’s your problem?

The Authority had the right to deport him. If he was given the all clear they would see Dominica as usual a small country that’s not able to to nothing to this country people.

I am extremely proud of Nasio Fountaine and his achievement and I am absolutely certain that we all would be extremely upset if it our beloved Nassio Fountaine who had been treated the way Tommy Lee was treated.
Can we imagine another Caribbean government deporting Nassio because they are concerned about security simply because Nassio sings – RISE UP PEOPLE RISE UP DONT LET THEM FOOL YOU NO MORE” or ” GOVERNMENT ARMED AND DANGEROUS”

I said that we have open up a can of worms and in fact we’ve encroached on human right violation and I must add that the UN takes this seriously. It was only recently that St Lucia had been subjected to some sanctions because of police brutality and human right violations in St Lucia.

There is also the tale of betrayal – betrayal of the Portsmouth people by an administration that refuse to take into consideration the economic benefit and survival of the people of Portsmouth . In addition there is the sad betrayal of the Douglas family by another Douglas family member who sat in on a cabinet decision and did not even have the balls to apprise the family of the cabinet decision to kaiybwosh the Tommy Lee show.
Now does it make sense that insiders of Labor government were claiming that the promoters knew before hand that Tommy Lee would have been denied entry. Could it be that the cabal was expecting that Ian would honor his obligation to his family and constituency and inform them of the cabinet’s decision?

What really eating out my inside is these hypocrite pedophile, bisexual, gays you have in these churches pretending to be christian like and the are more dark than anybody else, it did not surprise me that government make this move, the public safety was never compromised people, don’t let them fool you, if it was not that close to election they would never make that move, its just another stint of trying to win support from the so called hypocrite christian community they have in Dominica, i am not a fan of that Tommy guy, i don’t even go to those shows, but this government and these so called Christians sicken me man.

I think the people to be blame for this guy entering Dominica only to be denied entry should be on his promoters. They knew the controversy surrounding sparta doing a show and he was still asked to come! I am not a supporter of the artiste and care less about his music, and would not have his music played in my home. My children have enough sense to realize that his music is satanic, demonic however you want to call it, but a country has a right to refuse entry to any individual if they chose too. And let’s not make this about a hate thing against Jamaican because it is not…and it isn’t a hate against tommy lee ‘sparta’ it’s against the lyrics in his song< the message that he is bringing out that a few people and the religious council decide to protest against him having a show in Dominica based on that. Jamaican artists preform every year in Dominica's World Creole festivals and there isn't a problem. We can agree to disagree and in the same way the religious council let their voice be heard against this guy in protest, then people could have also set a protest for him to perform his show….it's a for and against…we cannot all want the same things and there is rights and wrongs in everything.

    February 25, 2014

Feb 21, 2013: Tommy Lee was interviewed and denied Canadian visa at the Canadian High Commission in Kingston, Jamaica, just days before being scheduled to headline a three-show tour in Montreal, Toronto and Niagara Falls

Mar 23, 2013: Tommy Lee show in Trinidad reportedly flops as nine people show up to concert.

Aug 29, 2013: Tommy Lee Sparta was detained in Costa Rica.

Tommy Lee Sparta himself stated in an interview “Na really Costa Rica I ha problem you know, ina Jamaica me a get de fight from you know, an me know who a do it ya seen, me na know wa reason ya seen, but betta dem who know wa reason ya seen, cause dem mash up me life”. He claims that it was only after the Costa Rican Immigration Officers scanned his passport they had to deny him entry as a result of what the scan revealed.

What a shame – I am disgusted by the fact that the government took a decision and didn’t even have the courtesy to consult with the promoters. I got it from credible source that this was a cabinet decision. Now one would wonder that if this is a cabinet decision then how does Ian Douglas sit there and not even demand that his family /the promoters be notified and that the people in Portsmouth who were awaiting the event in order to sell a few BBQ , peanuts , beers etc.
I cannot say that I hope the people of Portsmouth remember that cause the people of Portsmouth will vote the way they do for the last 55 years – sad but true. The incurable broom stick disease is well, alive and spreading in Portsmouth.

Do not allow casino gambling in Dominica, the people will loose their lands, they will become ignorant and dangerous. It is currently happening in other parts of the Caribbean, the people are loosing their homes and families due to lack of self control. Let Dominica be preserved as it is, it’s growth is that of intellect, chase the ignorance out of Dominica, not in. I have travelled the globe and can tell you, let CASINO’S into Dominica and Most of you shall reap hardache and pain, misery shall be your full cup to drink and joy will forget you in the morning. Eventually you will become a slave to someone else’s will and shall not be able to live a fruitful life. Come to St. Thomas Virgin Islands and witness for your selves the misery people sufferring here as a result of the ignorance brought upon the community by selfish, ignorant and neglectful leadership. A government that is raping it’s people and whose doors are gradually being diminished. You want to die, let the world into Dominica and you shall see it consumed before your eyes. The water springs you so love shall become piss holes, the rivers shall be filled with viruses, your livestocks will suffer and the natural beauty of the island shall Diminish. Ohhhh Adonai how I love to climb Morne Trois Pitons and Diablotin, how I love the Waitikubuli, and even Kubuli Beer, and Lubier Water spring, preserve that precious and blessed Islands, the last remaining landscape which is worth anything in this world. Don’t let Dominica become a barren and wasteful place like other Islands in the caribbean.

My blessings to the evangelist who stepped up to the plate to avoid a potential treat to the economy. The living word has power to conceive Death and Life. Glory be to the Most High Abba Adonai Elohim in the name of Yahoshua for putting it in the hearts of the Evangelist in Dominica for stepping up to defend even those whom cannot fathom in their minds the danger their lives were in. Dominica is a blessing to the Caribbean, Dominica shall be blessed among’st all our fellow islands. I stand strong as a big supporter of Dominica and Dominican’s abroad. This was not an act of ignorance nor neglect, it is a blessing to all Dominicans and an example to the world. Glory be to the Most High may he continue to fill up Dominica, for Dominica shall not lack. The integrity of the people increases everyday, the children are morally sound, I love Dominican’s for their potential of being the leading island a pearl to all throughout our communities. Great job Evangelist. The people will say all manner of things against you and what you have done, only because they themselves have lost the battle to fulfill their lust. You have defended your nation well. I am proud to have my children raised in Dominica, by Dominican’s. I am proud to have invested so much in your country, Glory be to the Most High this day, the Kingdom of Heaven is Rejoicing, Rejoice Dominica, Rejoice Dominica, Rejoice.

I pray that the Most High prepare Skerrit and his administration for the Battle at hand from the forces which shall try. They shall not succeed, this man is but a pebble in comparison to all that the Minister has had to face. I pray that the Ministry receives the support needed to advance to a successful stage. Should the Ministry need my own support, we are here and we shall fight to preserve Dominica and it’s people, the meek, the over-comers, the triumphant business owners, and even the ignorant minded who cannot understand the things of the Spirit. Receive your blessing Dominica, Receive your Blessing Dominican’s, stop complaining before you end up in the wilderness wondering how you got there. My soul, it rejoicing tonight, we shall support the Evangelist and the Government for standing up and taking part in this what is considered ignorant battle by most. Many shall be call, only few shall be chosen. Receive your reward, receive your reward Dominican’s, and rejoice.

Uwp supporters have been calling for a long time for the church and religious leaders in the country to speak out and take a stand against what they viewed as immorality, corruption and injustice in Dominica. Calypsoes were composed complaining about the silence of the church. I guess the church finally took their advice so the government had to take action to try to diffuse a potentially explosive situation. Now it seems that their actions have left us with a problem.

This is the reason why church and state do not mix in The USA. Dominica should take that as a lesson and should never try to mix church and state. I hope we learn something from this experience and never allow this to take place again.

    • Simply the Truth
      February 25, 2014

UWP’s motives are not that of God, of the Church. They know the UWP tricks which are not sincere and who they are directed at.
The Church has absolutely nothing to do with it. It is not their position to interfere in such that they know nothing about and cannot prove. They are the Church; not investigators.
You live a godly life and never deceive anyone or lie to them which I hope you have never done, for all your words.
Leave Church and State out of it for you know nothing about that except to quote them, giving the wrong impression to gullible readers.
There is a reason dating back to some years ago why Church and State are separated in the US. Read relevant information and listen to genuine religious programs. You will learn much about that.

For those people who think differently, where would you be without your values… do you not stand up for what you believe? For example, many ignorant Labour supporters would never invite a Workers into their house – bad example as it opens another can of worms, but it helps most to understand why as a sovereign state Dominica has to protect itself from influences deemed to be extreme and perilous.

What a government of ‘Boys with toys!’ Is that how they operate? No one felt responsible enough to call a press conference to clear the air? Since I did not see the signature of anyone on the statement are we to conclude that it was anonymous? Who is going to buy this foolish excuse? “Pursuant to advice received, government had concerns for public safety,” the statement said. “The decision to deny entry was intended as a preemptive action and also to provide an opportunity to exhaust all efforts to clarify information received.”
How do you as a government deny entry to a person on the basis of advice received and public safety? Did Tommy threaten to hurt anyone? If he made threats to anyone then why not charge him? Did someone make threats to Tommy? Why not charge that person? Pure foolishness. You all just succeeded in embarrassing the church by using them to play their usual partisan politics and you succeeded in embarrassing the people of Dominica. This is just pure nonsense and discrimination. All along the government knew very well what they were going to do but they just had to use the church to play their usual spiritual game. Ian Douglas, who is the parl rep of Portsmouth, the town where the boycott took place and where Tommy was supposed to perform should be fire! Ian is in the center of it no matter how one looks at it. He is the minister of tourism and it is his ministry that caused that embarrassment. Furthermore, this show was organized by the Douglas blood of which Ian is part of and Tommy local attorney is also 1st cousin of Ian. When stars and celebrity with a much better image than him are denied entry in Europe are there any law suits? are there even any questions being ask ?all they do is deport them. So pls y must we accept another country reject. If we stand for nothing we fall for everything. So come with a better case pls. I think the issue is that he is a CARICOM citizen and Dominica as part of Caricom is supposed to follow the rules of entry for Caricom citizens. I am sure there are exceptions for convicted criminals and such. If Tommy did not meet any of the exception criteria, the gov’t is not supposed to deny him entry. As for performing, thats another story, maybe thats where the law could have intervened appropriately.

If we sanction the gov’t to bend every rule as they see fit, then we may as well consider our country non-Democratic Police State.

The Governments explanation is lame and vacuous.

    – There was plenty of notice of this concert and if the Govt. were that concerned about public safety they should have advised the artiste and the organisers beforehand that his presence in Dominica was not welcome and that he would be refused entry.
    – They could have refused permission for his plane to land at Melville Hall, especially if it was a private flight. Why did they not do this?
    – I am not aware that arriving at an airport is an arrestable offence. Why then confine the man and his entourage to a police cell like common criminals? They could have put them up in more comfortable accommodation with security provided.
    – The delay in providing an explanation for this detention speaks volumes in that it creates the notion that, whoever gave the orders for this action was neither prepared nor foresaw the consequences and scrambled for most of the day to deliver a statement that, as it turns out, hardly fits the circumstances.

For better or worse the impression has been created that religious zealotry prevailed and that the Govt. crafted this tenuous explanation only as a result of the unexpected public outcry over its high-handed action.

They could try to stall GON Emanuel case of fraud against the other lawyer, or refuse to tell us about all those millionaires who bought diplomatic immunity, in exchange for plenty $$$$$$$$$$$$, or those criminals who now possess our diplomatic passport.

But they will have to explain why the Caricom national was denied entry and arrested. What exactly was the Security threat? What action did the artist display on arrival to deem him a security threat in Dominica?

I remember the Pastor and “Christians” who claimed that the names of Morne Diablotin and Morne Aux Diable should be changed, because they revere the devil. Govt listened and officially changed the names to Morne La Paix and Morne ….. Is now we have crime, violence, abuse, corruption, quick enrichment, greed, selfishness, injustice, name them

This government is really out of its depth. They pay no regard to established norms, legal or other wise. The manner in which they treated this man is simply not right. It was crude, vulgar, uncivilized and without any regard to the man’s human rights under the various conventions to which Dominica has committed. No regards to CSME. No regard to the precedents of the CCJ. The government was simply bowing to pressure from religious groups. Now, they-the government and the religious groups- have given Tommy Lee Sparta a bigger profile in the Caribbean and internationally. Now, more young persons will listen to his music-exactly what the pastors and weaklings in government did not want! And more: expect a case to be filed at the CCJ and for tens of thousands of dollars to be paid by the taxpayers of Dominica as compensation for the lack of wisdom, subtlety and sophistication of this government.

What a shame! Is this the way a government behaves? This is gross disrespect to a human being, a Caribbean artist, to the organizers of the concert and the patrons who paid their money to see the artist.
The government sat in silence like a bunch of cowards, humiliating the young man in jail, said nothing and at this late hour they say they say “The decision to deny entry was intended as a preemptive action and also to provide an opportunity to exhaust all efforts to clarify information received.”
The Government did not have the testicular fortitude to inform the organizers that the artist will not be welcome in Dominica to avoid this embarrassment? They thought that immigration and customs would shoulder the blame for their cowardly act? What type of leaders are these. That’s why they are all over the place selling Dominican passports all over the world, secretly.
    Shame on this government!

  80. February 24, 2014

Minister of national security you said pursuant to advice received tell us what Tommy Lee Sparta was going to do that would cause a security breach for Dominica and Dominicans especially in Portsmouth, you may say you haven got to explain your actions but think of all the individuals who haven got a job but would have made some money at the concert especially the other artiste who had to play, this sound more like conspiracy and I’m sure their will be consequence because this is bad for D”ica.

First and foremost……what kind of country we live in when an artist or performer gets arrested at the airport for coming to do a show that the people from the country paid him to do…..and what exactly is a security threat when he had a port of departure wouldn’t they have arrested him there instead…..I love dance hall music……wasn’t really a fan of Tommy Lee but he has his fans…….the cabinet level decisions they should be talking about is the firebombing and the millions that the PM just accumulate Mysteriously without any prior business……THE WORST GOVERNMENT EVER THEY DON”T WANT US TO DO IT FOR OURSELVES>>>>LABOR PARTY is a bunch of communists……but to every rope there is an END…the END of the labor Party is near.

    • February 24, 2014

Yeah, I know artists get arrested all the time in other Countries because they are in possession of narcotics/drugs or guns. What did this artist have in his possession? MUSIC. STHU.

  84. Seriously?
    February 24, 2014

And in so doing, those citizens of Dominica who could normally care less about Tommy Lee or would actually support banning his performance, are pushed into supporting his case of being denied entry into a Caricom territory. Once again we ask, what are the purpose of laws in Dominica, if the gov’t can modify them if/when they feel? Agree with this man’s music or not, agree that it may be a security hazard or not, either way Caricom nationals are allowed free access into all Caricom states and thats that. If there are exceptions the gov’t should reference that code.

This situation should be no different than if it were a Dominican singing craziness, or considered a security threat. The Gov’t should inform the organizers of their concern and if anything hazardous occurs shut the show down…but to deny him entry…access to at least a hotel room…is ridiculous.

I guess now other Caricom gov’ts can come up with equal concerns to keep Dominicans out of their country??

    • Anonymous

Blaze, ou byen fèt! I have long supported this administration, not in everything. The only thing I have the most serious complain about is the airport, it’s an embarrassment. The runway is fine, but the terminal building is no bigger than most houses in Dominica. This is another to the list. However, the country been surpassing many other countries within the Caribbean when it comes to economic output. The only thing lacking in our government is their IL regard to farmers. All that said, people should be free to do whatever they want as long as they are not hurting anyone. This is what means to be free. Not because a group think something is wrong.

Come on people it’s 2014 and we can’t handle things better than that.Years ago I came to Dominica and I had an encounter with the cops and let me tell you this is one of the reasons I am a US citizen .It’s sad to say but there is no law in Dominica and as far as I’m concern If I didn’t have more family in Dominica I would not even come back there. There are more places to visit and don’t have to face some of our people with their ignorance and lack of knowledge of a lot of things.People @ home needs to understand that some many people are reading their comments and it’s a shame they don’t think before they write. Come better than that government, carbinet, minister whoever. i dont condone satanic lyrics, whether tommy lee has such lyrics i do not know because i have never heard his songs. but this business of the government saying about security reasons is hog wash.
