Trinidadian born Justice, with Dominican roots, Geoffrey Henderson, has been elected to serve as a judge on the International Criminal Court (ICC) based in the Hague.

Although Henderson was not born in Dominica, he considers himself a Dominican.

He is the third son of Dominicans, Doctor and Professor Thomas H. Henderson and Malachai Eugene Henderson, both now deceased.

Justice Henderson’s father hailed from Grand Bay, was an old boy of the Dominica Grammar School and was the former Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension at the University of the West Indies in Trinidad, spending his retirement years in Dominica.

His mother was from Pottersville.

Henderson has served as Director of Public Prosecutions in Trinidad and at the time of his election, was a judge of the Supreme Court of Trinidad and Tobago.

A statement from the foreign ministry in Trinidad said Henderson, who has 24 years experience in the criminal justice system, was the island’s candidate at the ICC’s 12th session of the assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute.

“Mr Justice Henderson’s candidacy was approved by the Assembly of States Parties in the first and only round of voting, and he secured 98 votes out of a maximum 99 votes (with 1 abstention), easily surpassing the two-thirds majority required for election whilst drawing support from all regions of the world,” the statement said.

His candidacy for the post was supported by Caribbean Community (CARICOM) member states of Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, St Lucia and Suriname.

Justice Henderson was elected to the ICC on Nov 23 this year. His term of office will expire on March 10, 2021.

I am connected to Dominica by marriage. I am very proud of this young man. Whatever his achievements are, he is mindful to remember his Dominica roots. Be proud of him because he does not have to mention Dominica.

With all the negative press out there, it is good to see a young person achieving and achieving well.

Hello and good morning my people. Well I would like to congratulate Mr Henderson on his appointment to the International Criminal Court. Now I hope he used this position to go after Former President Bush and Cheney for their illegal war and lies against the Iraq people. We know the ICC has a history of going after African leader but they don’t go after western leaders so I hope Mr Henderson will bring a change on the Court.

congrats to Mr. Justice Henderson – wonder if as a boy he ever worked in a car rental and sold bread – moral of the story no matter where you start of from you can achieve much – next is Ron Charles and Josha Francis – they have the potential the zeal and the intelligence to reach that far and they are just as handsome –

Dominica has been blessed with talent and resources.
Why do we have to be the least developed in the Caribbean? Dominicans wake up.

      Pedro.

Good morning to you. Well we are the lease developed because five families holds proprietors contract for goods coming into Dominica. I inquired about opening a supermarket but I was surprised that I would have to do business with those five families who do not want any competition.

Because institutional factors matter. We are very intelligent talented people (must be the water :-D ) but our local institutional factors – like legal system, market system, innovation systems, etc are very weak. Out true potential can only come out when we combine talent with good institutions. And that happens mostly in overseas location.

His father, Tom was an intelligent man. He left Dominica to work at UWI, T & T with some other Dominicans.
It is not surprising that his son has achieved such a high position. He is obviously intelligent which he inherited from his parents.
Dominica is not strange to him since he must have visited there a few times and has strong sentiments for his parents’ country and roots including having relatives who still reside there. He looks like a regular person as we say, :) who would enjoy visiting and residing in D/ca.
He has a first cousin who resides in Toronto whom he probably never met. Sad to say, this cousin is not well.
Congratulations Geoffrey Henderson and good luck to you in your new position. Your parents have done well for you and you have done well for yourself.
You are a model to also the youths of Dominica who should emulate you and to try at least to be diligent in their studies in order to obtain whatever job of their choice when they have completed their studies.
You are a good candidate, if ever you have the time someday to visit Dominica and to give a few talks in the Dominica schools.
God bless you. May He always be with you, guiding you and protecting you.

      Justice and Truth.

Good morning to you. Well I agree with what you say but does Mr Henderson has dual citizenship since his parents are Dominicans. We have to do like the Jews in America who has duel citizenship so we can truly claim people like Mr Henderson otherwise he will visit Dominica but he won’t have any true attachment to Dominica.

He is not staying in Trinidad. Even that too small for him. He is going to be located in the Hague (Holland). This is a very important, international position to judge international crime against humanity. You remember Charles Taylor? All his wealth did not help him. Some big shots better watch out!

I do not think so because he told me he loves Dominica and Skerrit, and likes what he hears about Dominca’s progress. His father also loved Labour. He will be in DA for a few days in 2014.
