Miss Dominica dispels talks of non action

Nadira Lando

Dominica’s reigning carnival queen Nadira Lando has said despite the common misconception that she isn’t up to “anything much”, several plans are in the pipeline for projects even after her reign.

Lando, who captured two regional titles after she was crowned Miss Dominica last year, said she will also work with the new Miss Dominica next year.

“People may think that I have not done anything, but everything is in the works. I am not putting it out in public unless it’s finalized,” she insisted on Monday.

Lando says a reading program for her indigenous people, the Kalinagos, will be launched soon.

“I plan on working on a reading program with the Kalinago children.  I am focusing on them because I love reading and I am hoping to share my passion with them,” she added.

She said she has also done work at schools on the outskirts of the island and visited the Grotto Home and the Princess Margaret Hospital.

Lando currently holds the Miss Dominica, Miss Caribbean World and Miss Jaycees titles.

My sweet Dominican people please may we love, support and encourage one another? obviously, if Miss Dominica of which we should all be proud of regardless of who holds the tittle says,in this case,Miss Lando that she has some works in the pipeline; can we please be patient and probably reach out to her to so whether we can be of any help to her? Factually, she has won three tittles that should alert us all that she is a young lady with her head on her shoulders. therefore, she is not stupid in my opinion. It would be extremely nice and Dominican of us all if we treat and consider her as we would our own daughters. Please remember there is no expiration date on the wishes abilities and plans of an individual to do good.Peace and love to you my people.Miss Dominica truly my pride is with you. Please continue to represent your self, your family, the people of Dominica and the country of Dominica well.May god bless and guide you and all your efforts.Should there be any-thing you think that could be done by me to help your plans do not hesitate to post it as a comment on this message board.D.N.O. IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE PLACE TO BE. THE MESSAGE THEREFORE,WILL BE GOTTEN BY ME.

ADMIN you didn’t like the fact i said that Ms. Dominica needs to have better public speaking skills or if you all trying to help her grow as a public figure of that nature u all need to exude discretion in your reporting skills where you don’t just dictate things but proof read and modify so it can be indicative proper speaking skills. DNO i don’t know if you all read the stuff you all post but as a reporting entity its a shame. And i don’t fault Ms. Dominica for not being able to speak clear and concise at this stage of her reign. To put it out there, she is a Queen BUT she doesn’t have to limit herself to being a beauty Queen. She may have the beauty thing on lock down but it takes more than that to be a true Queen.
Why can’t we go the extra mile, somebody said she not getting paid, to do it but if she only does something for her country because she getting paid then she isn’t the best option for a Queen(not bashing her here).
Queens from around world undergo many projects during their reign such as charity fund raisers, walks(as Marcia did) Charity shows and others.
On a third point, why does the reading program have to be for Kalinago children only, isn’t it only fair as Miss DOMINICA to have the program for DOMINICANS and not only Kalinago youths
All in all she has done a good job as a Beauty Queen and i congratulate her on all her titles, she made us proud.and i am awaiting to see the projects she has coming up,.

This is just racist. Dno where u got that info.I have not heard any past queens done anything for the country. All they do is take part in contest. At Critical thinker……have you been following her to all the places she has been? and all the Charity work she has done? yes i agree that one must be able to accept criticism… indeed that’s true leadership! But how can one accept criticism that is unfounded its a fallacy concocted by jealousy and greed.Miss Lando has been a hard working young woman, who had been very involved in the community even before being crowned! most of us don’t know about her work cause she is not one to brag…..her work has directly impacted many individuals at all levels!!

    • Peeping Tom
      December 11, 2012

Then, Anonymous, the criticisms are a time for her to list her involvement. For example, «In September 2012, i helped bake bread at the XYZ bakery for 2 weeks.» Facts, Anonymous. Facts. let us leave out all this vague talk of «community involvement» and all this emotional mumbo jumbo of «she nice» and blah, blah, blah that has been spewed here and elsewhere. Fact we need!

The public should be better educated about the role of a reigning Carnival queen. As far as most of us are concerned, her role is to be an ambassador. Has she represented us well ? of course. She won two regional titles. she carries herself beautifully wherever she goes.I haven’t heard much about queens doing anything except taking part in regional pageants. So my dear Nadira, judging from the performance of other reigning queens, you have done well so accept your criticms gracefully but cut yourself some slacks girl.

me myself, i never hear nothing like that anywhere besides reading it here. so where did it come from? Everytime someone wants to bring out a talk, they say is people saying.
If the queen has to do a certain number of events, why isnt that implemented by the carnival association to ensure that the queen does something. Take a peek at The Trump and see a list of things the reigning queen has to do. If the association just crown them and send them around the caribbean to compete, then let it be. Or let them get to work with some projects that they wish the queens to participate in, otherwise, after the show, they can go at their home.

why pick on Miss Lando, because she is of kaliango decent? How comes this sentiment was not expressed for those before her? Shew has worked well and hard to achieve those crowns not fore herslef but to make D/ca nose get longer. Those in authority give her the support and the funds to see she dreams / wishes come true. Please don’t pick on her. Some of us Domcans too bias.Give her a break in her life. Miss Dominica keep your head high and keep reaching for the sky. All your future is ahead of you.

    • Peeping Tom
      December 11, 2012

Well, being Kalinago does not give her an exempt ticket from criticism, either. And, screaming «kalinago« does not answer the legitimate question of «what has she done for us lately.»

So, destroy the race card. It is not helping your argument. It surely is not helping Ms. Lando.

      • Critical Thinker
        December 13, 2012

Peeping Tom I would shake your big toe. Some people equate constructive criticism with racism, hate, jealousy.

None of us is free from error and if Nadira views critics she has to take that as a pinch of salt.

    • Suki
      December 12, 2012

I’ve heard other complains from other queens… and they weren’t kalinagos :/

  17. Critical Thinker
    December 11, 2012

Oh Dominicans, people must learn to welcome criticism well.

It is true that Nadira Lando has done exceptionally well in her performance, however, it’s almost an entire year, tell us, what has she done during her reign? All I saw were pictures taken off her on facebook and her “fans” commenting on them.

Take Marcia from Portsmouth for example, she had this walk-a-ton campaign for diabetes, now that’s a real queen. She did something for her people, she worked to sensitize the people regarding diabetes.

We acknowledge once again that Nadira has performed well, however, she could have been more involved with the people of Dominica who supported her. If she embarks on a literacy campaign for the Kalinago people, all well and good but we must remember she is the Dominican Queen not simply Kalinago queen.

Nadira has to admit that a lot could have been done as a queen. Admitting wrong is a test of true leadership.

    • Formula 1
      December 11, 2012

Do i detect a note of jealousy here?

    • Tee
      December 11, 2012

I think at times we get in over our head about this queen show thing. Nadira is a ‘CARNIVAL QUEEN’ and not the queen of England nor a politician. We did not elect her to hold office to address Dominica’s social issues. Any Carnival queen who chooses to rally for a cause is doing so out of choice! I applaud Marcia for her choice and I applaud Nadira for her choice too.

If the young lady chooses to address literacy for Kalinagos what is wrong with that? If she had started a program in Roseau ‘some of us’ would be quick to say that she forgot ‘her’ people, right? Successful literacy programs usually start on a small scale and are replicated when positive, sustainable results are achieved. I am no Kalinago and I do not know her personally, but all hail Nadira for the little or the lot that she is doing. Charity begins at home (however we choose to define home. We all have to start somewhere.

      December 11, 2012

I’m in unison with you Critical Thinker. Everyone seems to think that giving your opinion means your bashing someone. It isn’t. Though Nadira has done well claiming several titles and marketing Dominica, she has not done anything of substancial significance for Dominicans in general. As she said she has projects on the way for the carib territory people. I do not believe that she has truly carried the true meaning of queen

    • hmm
      December 12, 2012

nonsense….this is not well meaning critique because it is not founded in fact.

your comment about facebook exposed your slant. did u take time to find out what she has done before running off at the mouth?

is there a mandate on a list of activities that the queens are supposed to undertake during their reign? who decides whether someone has been active or not? i am convinced that some persons sit idly by and look to shed negative criticism. the queen has done a wonderful job thus far in representing Dominica as our beauty. i am not Kalinago, but i am proud of Nadira and am satisfied that she has represented us well. A queen is a figure head. May be we should set up a charity so that the queens can work with during their tenure. in the absence of that she is there to represent and she has done that gracefully. Proceed with pride and tenacity in the direction of your dreams Nadira and do not allow anyone to pull you down. you’re a sweet and intelligent girl! i am sure that you will do well in your future career and contribute to your people’s economic and social development when you have completed your studies. Until such time keep on lighting the world with your wonderful smile. Much love :-D

As far as I am concerned the reigning queen of the year should be given a monthly stipend for the year since she has to look nice and pretty and appear at all kinds of public events. Put your money where your mouth is Dominica. All kidsa of people getting money for doing nothing but putting an x somewhere and some not even that. Leave the young lady alone.

Uhm… I thought she was a “beauty” queen contestant? She has represented Dominica very well in other beauty pageants and that alone should dispel the cries of non-action.

This young lady is going above and beyond to support social causes and we want to criticize her? Really? Why not support her cause to promote the literacy of our Kalinago people? Give books, give money, volunteer to tutor… do something positive for a change!

As usual, the natives becomes easy target for the media. I guess her heritage makes her the slave doesn’t it? man there are a ton load of government ministering lazying around on tax payers back not doing all. Go ask them what were their benchmarks in their ministries and what have they achieved so far. Go ask the minister of finance what increase has the revebue stream in Dominica witnessed over the last 3 years.
And for God sake go ask the minister of labour when will this lazy government give teachers a salary hike.
Leave my Kalinago queen alone. She has done the country proud in her representation oversees.
Cut her some slacks and leave her scholarship alone…Wicked people..dont even know your priorities you want to come judge my queen!!!!

    • Peeping Tom
      December 11, 2012

So, Larwi Deahyeah, the only persons to be held accountable are the government ministers? Teachers who sit at their desk all day with their BB and public figures like our carnival queen need not be answerable to us. We must simply pump scarce money into them. Your logic is somewhat «deahyeah» on this topic, i think.

peeping Tom, it seem to me you sign the budget document they gave to the queen to go save Dominica from the mess it is in. Maybe you should give out the figures to that budget. How much was it?
And yes, ther are teachers and other government workers who do not work efficiently in the jobs they hold. they are paid a salary and you have my permission to go after them. especially the Red square pegs in round holes…
but cut my queen some slacks.

Why try to the turn the position/title of Miss Dominica into something it isn’t. If she does good, then fine…but there should be none of that pressure to go out and make magic.

And for the record the girl has been all over the place doing what beauty queens do…making appearances and trying to represent well.
