Below are photos and profiles of all the 2012 contestants.
Vilma Lewis – North
Vilma Lewis is a Dental Surgery Assistant employed with the Ministry of Health. She is stationed at the Portsmouth Health Centre, and occasionally works at the Roseau Health Centre.
She aspires to be a dental surgeon one day. Vilma enjoys reading and dancing and loves being on stage. She is thrilled to be a participant in this year’s National Wob Dwiyet pageant since it gives her the opportunity to proudly show off our beautiful National Wear in all its elegance, to residents and visitors alike.
Cortella Defoe – South
Cortella is born under the sign of Capricon and hails from the cultural capital of Dominica, Grand Bay. She is very ambitious and attends the Dominica state college where she is pursuing studies in primary education. She aims to be a teacher of excellence. Cortella enjoys reading, traditional dancing and socialising. Her excitement at being in the Pageant this year is rooted in the Spectacular wear segment. It offers her the opportunity to be “over the top creative” and to share the results with a great audience.
Jewelle Browne –South West
Jewelle Browne is a part time employee at Krazy Koconuts and the Laughing Lobster. She graduated from the State College with an Associate’s Degree in tourism and Hospitality. Jewelle has set her sights on becoming an executive chef with her own show on the Food Network. Eventually she hopes to open and run her family- owned, Culinary Institution. It will be no surprise to discover that the aspect of our culture which most inspires her is the area of Cuisine. When she is off work Jewelle enjoys creative dance; she is currently a member of the Waitukubuli Dance Theatre Company. Jewelle’s greatest mentor is her Mom who is the assistant Sous chef at Fort Young waterfront. Our South West representative is looking forward to treating the National Wob Dwiyet Pageant audience with a feast of the best of Dominica’s Culture.
Danielle Cuffy – South East
Danielle Cuffy is a graduate of the Castle Bruce Secondary school and currently works as an assistant teacher at the Grand Fond Pre- school. She also is a care giver with the Roving Care Givers program. Danielle plans to study child psychology and utilise her skills to uplift her community and to play her part in the country’s drive to raise the standard of pre-school Education in Dominica. Danielle enjoys dancing, reading, interacting with community people, making new friends, but most of all she enjoys singing. Singing her Dominican folk repertoire is pure joy for Danielle which is why she is a dedicated member of the Upheavals Cultural Group, one of the top folk choirs in Dominica and one which has enjoyed a long, successful history of Kwéyòl singing. National Wob Dwiyet pageant audience….. Danielle is preparing to make your hearts sing on the night of October 25th!!
Sharmel Elizee – West
Sharmel is a proud employee at Clear Harbour. She is deeply concerned about the security of the vulnerable of our society- the young and the old, consequently she dreams of becoming a police officer one day. Sharmel loves dancing, playing netball and having fun with social networking. While she has never been actively involved with Dominica’s traditional dance, she feels a sense of great pride when watching performances of these dances. October 25th is going to be a very special night for Sharmel. She considers her participation in this year’s National Wob Dwiyet Pageant, as a public declaration of her support of all efforts to preserve the traditional culture of Dominica.
Kelicia Bedminister – North East
Kelicia is a graduate of the North East Comprehensive School with a passion for community development. She is planning to pursue a career in nursing with a view to utilising her skills to bring physical and social health to her community. Kelicia’s favourite aspect of Dominica’s Traditional Culture is Dance. This love has galvanised her into accepting the presidency of Calibishie’s leading folkloric group–the Trend Setters -a group which received the LeBlanc Trophy in 2011 for excellence in the area of the Preservation of Dominica’s Traditional Dance. Kelicia is no stranger to the stage which is why she can promise her 2012 Wob Dwiyet Pageant audience a show that will keep your feet tapping with joy.
Ashma Auguiste – East
Ashma is Kalinago and a very proud participant in the 2012 National Wob Dwiyet Pageant. She is a student at the Dominica State College, registered in the faculty of Arts and Science. She plans to be a Flight Attendant; one who will be an ambassador for her country as she interacts with travellers moving throughout the Caribbean Region. Ashma enjoys singing and dancing. The sound of the Kalinago Drummers all through the year conjures up strong feelings of national pride within her and their heightened activity during Dominica’s Independence season contributes to making it a favourite time of year for her. It is a time when she can savour her community’s cultural activities. When she stands on stage on October 25th before the National Wob Dwiyet audience, she will stand with pride, confident in the knowledge that the rich variety and beauty of Dominica’s culture is partly a result of the resilience of the Indigenous people of Dominica – The Kalinago!
