It appears that certain remarks made by Evangelist Peter R. Augustine about Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, recently are not going down well with another man of cloth.
Using his ‘Kingdom Connection’ radio program, Pastor Randy Rodney, took a shot at Augustine, who during the handing over ceremony of 300 Petrocasas by the Venezulean President to Dominica last week, described Skerrit as Dominica’s best Prime Minister so far.
“I believe I said it once, and the press took me to task. And I repeat it here that I believe that God knew and God knows exactly why he allowed us to have this Prime Minister for such a time as this,” Augustine said at the ceremony. “And I still believe that he is the best that we have had in this country so far. I thank God for you sir, and not only that I believe that in no uncertain terms you have shown the level of leadership that you are capable of demonstrating.”
But according to Rodney such statements do not come from a seasoned or spiritual theological mind.
“It does not come from a mature mind,” Rodney stated, adding it came from the mind of someone who tries to win favors.
“And if you don’t agree, drink some Loubiere Water,” he stated.
Rodney also had strong words for the media where Augustine was referred to as a ‘pastor,’ saying that not everyone who preaches is a pastor.
“A pastor is one who leads a flock of people. Ok? They have a congregation. That is a pastor,” he noted. “A preacher is different from a pastor. A drunk man on the side of the road can preach and he is not a pastor. There are people in our churches who get up and they preach, they are not pastors.”
Rodney said, as a pastor he felt insulted when “you call other people pastors because the responsibilities I carry, they don’t carry it.”
He stated a pastor is responsible to a flock and must be “careful” with what comes out of his mouth, while an evangelist is not accountable to anyone but himself.
“Now, having given you that piece of education, Peter Augustine is not a pastor,” Rodney noted. “He is an evangelist he is not a pastor. He may want to be a pastor one of those days but to this date he is not a pastor. We call him, in theological terms, a man who comes and throw scatter shots and go about his business, that’s what an evangelist is. Peter R Augustine is not a pastor, so when he makes his declarations and proclamations, he is speaking on his own behalf.”
Rodney continued, “So guess what, it doesn’t matter if the queen takes him to pray for them, he is praying on his own behalf. So when he goes to pray everywhere on the behalf of the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) he is not praying on the behalf of the evangelical community. In other words, what Peter Augustine said does not represent me, and many other pastors who have congregations that they are responsible for. Do not make that representation about us in the media because you make us look stupid, you make us look foolish, you make us look like we don’t know what we about.”
He went on to outline the responsbilities of a pastor saying they are not party hacks, nor do they receive “favor” and do “things,” rather they understand that they function by the grace of God.
“Pastors declare the word of God without fear of who it hurts, you hear me?” Rodney said. “So pastors don’t make dumb statements …”
He said Augustine’s statement about Skeritt was dumb and cannot be ascribed to a pastor.
“That’s a dumb statement, that’s a very dumb statement, in fact that’s an extremely dumb statement for anybody in their right minds…” he remarked.
