A recovering addict’s story of success

Christabella George has put her life back on track
Christabella George has put her life back on track

Christabella George’s life has not been an easy one.

She was abused as a child, forced to the streets at 13 and is recovering from crack-cocaine addiction.

George, from Portsmouth, has slept in garbage, ate garbage and served time in prison.

She lived in several Caribbean islands and was neglected when she returned to Dominica.

“I ended up in jail and when I came out from jail I still end up back on the road,” the mother of five said.

But now George has successfully put her life back on the track and her story is one of persistence, hard work and determination.

Putting her life back on track began one day when she went to smoke crack at the bayside in Portsmouth.

“I used to go and smoke by the bay,” George recalled. “And I was watching the bayside, like something telling me you have to clean that bay, something telling me that is the work I have to do.”

She told her peers of the idea of finding a job to clean the bay and she immediately sprang into action.

She began asking for a job to make her dream of a clean bayside a reality.

However, with her background as a crack-cocaine addict landing the job was not easy.

According to her, she was told she was “not ready.”

After a month of asking, she finally got what she was looking for.

Now a street cleaner, George is working hard to stay clear from drugs and to earn her own living.

“I love it, I love it dearly…” she said of her job.

The video below by Drinnon Nyerere tells the story of Christabella George.

God is able. I’m in tears. This lady really needs love. Let’s hope that she stays strong and remains clean. She needs counselling. This program is touching. Please relatives embrace and help her. Someone please befriend her. May God continue to strengthen her and let her fully surrender to the Lord.

It is true she needs gloves to do the work, she may have them but not comfortable wearing them. She is far better staying away from the drugs than wearing gloves.

Cristabel, God is truly turning things around for you, the best is yet to come just continue to trust him and he will do great and mighty things with and for you. You have inspired me with your story and I was in tears at the end. I prayed and will continue to remember you and especially your daughter Tricia in prayer.

    1 Samuel 2:8
He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the LORD’S, and he hath set the world upon them.

This woman is more than an encouragement to me. she once stopped my vehicle to tell me that she was fighting temptation and going in an area where she would possibly spend the last 50$ she had. ” would you hold on to it for me please?” she asked. i reluctantly agreed knowing very little about her then. she came by the following day for her money and thanked me immensely. today she is a friend and i’m always encouraged listening to her. i only pray that she is equally encouraged by me.

Thank you for inspiring my final project. Hopefully it can be implemented in D/ca when I return home from my studies in the next few months, to help you and others facing similar challenges. I would also like to be part of your support system (as you requested) when you feel the need to talk to someone to give you insight and advice, which is a small but useful step towards a long-term and happy sobriety. May God bless you in abundance.

We need more people with Christabella’s attitude all over Dominica. We would really be worthy of the name “Nature Island of the Caribbean.”

Just giving God praise for this story… You are an awesome God and I thank you for the life of Christabella.. You are always in the business of working miracles and allowing a strong message to get to your people so we can change. Father I pray that the many of us who are touched by this story will make a concise decision to turn to you as our Lord and Savior and to allow you to use us like you did Christabella to bring out your message..

This lady will meet and touch more people in this job than most of us will do at our desks. Inspirational indeed!! I internalized her passion for the job, her openness to everything she experienced, she looked forward to meeting people on the streets and took notice when not too many were present on the day of the video. She is humorous too and well loved by the few shown.

Appreciate her Portsmouth, she has a good heart and truly loves her job. A pay raise can be a good incentive for her, She wanted the job and walked after it, and was told to come back several times and went back. God had it for you Christabel you were persistent. Blessings to you, you touched me seriously

I thank God for this wonderful soul. A heart that God transformed in the midst of a storm. Your children should be so, so, proud of you. You have made me questioned my obedience to God…when you said, ” I love my job dearly, that’s the job God gave to me and he wants me to do a good job”. I was in tears…hence I reflected back on the word of God , which said, we will be surprise who we see in heaven. May God bless you richly, may he continue to be your strength…your strong tower in time of trouble. God has lifted you up, without you even realizing that’s He is promoting you.

“Cleanliness is next to Godliness,” and lady you are up there with the stars. It doesn’t matter that you’re a street cleaner, the fact that you recognize that you can be the BEST at whatever it is you do, is in fact, what God requires of each of us. Your strengh and determination is refreshing. Be encouraged, your reward will not always come from where you think it will. The mere fact that I’m thousands of miles away from Dominica and I’m reading this story and I’m moved, it’s the same way someone else reading this story wherever they may be can moved as well and be the answer to your prayers.

I hope those wicked people that sexually abuse children see what they does cause! Those of us who doh end up in similar position is simply by the grace of God. Leave children alone bastards! It is take whole lifetime to recover from that shit if you are ever lucky to.

    • April 16, 2014

You have used some bad language but there are those who will say it is the only language some people understand and sadly this may be true.

It is time law enforcement got real tough on those who hurt children and especially on those who abuse them sexually. I I have zero tolerance for this @#%&*, and I only hope I am never left alone with one of these *.?%#@?#@ When I was counseling I would leave the office door ajar. My secretary knew she could rap once and barge in at any time.

I had to remind myself that but for the grace of God … … … Only the power of God can heal their minds and transform their lives. But I want to assure you that God can change them.

They need to be born again as in St. John 3:3, and become a new creation as promised in 2 Corinthians 5:17. Some may require help from a true Bible based deliverance ministry followed by in-depth pastoral counselling. Much depends on the individual. A person must be honest, want to change, and accept the help that is offered and available to them.

Pastoral counseling is a valid profession and not in any way secondary to psychological practice. When I was counseling I had certification (CPC) recognized by the federal government that enabled those who had it to carry malpractice insurance.

I believe there is a place for psychology in the right hands. But the idea put forth that we should be teaching psych in our elementary and high schools to stabilize the minds of our children is garbage. Within the past week here in Canada a young university grad (a man) attending an orderly house party with between 20-30 of his fellow students suddenly for no apparent reason went an got a knife (he did not bring it with him) and in a matter of minutes stabbed to death five of the students. This man had just graduated with psychology major.

What our schools need here in Canada and the USA is to bring back the Bible and prayer. I remember when a school day would open with a Scripture reading and prayer. At least once a week there was a class on religion that often was based on a Bible story. This was a public – not a religious – school. In those days there were no school shootings. Schools did not have to have guards patrolling
      the halls.

Because sexual child abuse often does not stop with the first victim and because the results are so far reaching more work needs to be done. In some places the laws should be tightened. Enforcement should be reviewed. It is encouraging to read of organized efforts to address child abuse. I know there are people in Dominica and the Caribbean working in this field and I congratulate them. We need more in Canada and everywhere.

Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. International Evangelist.

You too fast. Yo don’t have no reason to go after this woman like that. If she didn’t care she wouldn’t try to find her. I pray that you never have anyone you love in that situation, but if you do then you will understand the dynamics of this disease. People usually have to hit rock bottom before they can be helped.
Next time do your home work. Until then zip it.

  47. Simply the Truth
    April 15, 2014

I cannot believe that someone would wickedly give thumbs down to this wonderful story.
Thanks be to God, one who was lost has come back to life. Good timing. What a great story during Holy Week, a reminder that Our Lord Jesus Christ died for each one of us to save us that we might live with him in His (our) Heavenly Father’s Glorious Kingdom forever.
God is always calling the lost sheep. Some as Christabella heard him, paid heed and changed. Is it a coincidence that her name commence with Christ…? He surely had his eyes on you and looking down on you pitifully from your youth to your adulthood. God speaks to us regardless of our status. With God, there is no distinction and in Heaven. In this case, we are one and the same not as it is on earth. This is why we pray, The Our Father …May Thy Will be done on earth as it is in Heaven…
Christabella you have done well. Hopefully, if the Good Lord wills, someday when I visit D/ca I will pay a visit to Portsmouth. This town is no stranger to me. I have visited it a few times.
I am thinking, what is her size? Some of us have clothing, barely used, in excellent, clean condition and could send them or a few to her.
We give away a lot in this country, Catholics to St. Vincent de Paul Society, twice annually, the others, Salvation Army and other non-profit organizations.
Personally, I like giving directly to people whom I know will make good use of them.
What about her children? How old are they? They, too, may be in need of help.
God bless you Christabella, continue keeping up the godly spirit and of working. Once you keep busy there will be no time to be idle. We hope that you achieve your aspirations. Your story has gone out to the world, to all Dominicans who, in time, will do their utmost to help in whatever manner they possibly could. You will be OK in the future. Again, God bless you and also your children.
Thanks be to God. All praise, honor and glory be to Him. God is so good!

Wow, what the spirit and strength of one person can achieve in a community. As the word says “it only takes a spark to set a fire burning” that’s God love and he has given Christabelle the opportunity to heal in the simpliest way. She is the perfect example of a good Samaritian who has made her past struggles known to the public even though she has been condemned by others in her community. The plight of drugs in Dominica is staggering and becoming an epidemic within the population. Our youths and adults are been attacked by this monster; the personal testimony of this lady can be used as a stepping stone for grassroot organizations to develop groups throughout the island that target this social issue. God is the essence of all things and he is the reason why we breathe. More power to Christabelle.

  48. April 15, 2014

“I love it, I love it dearly…” she said of her job–News article

Many people are born into a state of emptiness–but Life is not meant to empty, for this Life is from God–the God who is full of joy and peace and the blessings of Life in Love.

Christabella was one of those people–born into an existence of emptiness–but she was luckier than most people like her. She had a mind that would eventually reject that lifestyle she was living, that mind would show her that she did not have to live that lifestyle of emptiness.

Christabella saw her way out of emptiness and into an existence of fulfillment–she was willing, and her mind did not give up on her. Christabella had a hope and she did her best to fulfill that hope.

Christabella believed that she could overcome her existence of emptiness by doing a job most people would look down to–being a street cleaner. She went after that job and got it. Now she says “I love it” “I love it dearly”

I did not see the video–but I will watch it later. Everyone says that the story is inspiring; but is that enough? I just hope that Christabella’s story has influence us in Dominica–especially the young people–to stop saying the government should do this, that, and the other thing–that is not possible if they do not have the willing mind and the manpower of us–the people of Dominica.

Isn’t Christabella getting paid? Yes but job was her own idea–she just needed the financial support; and she got it.

Christabella found herself a job, that will do two things for her. She will find fulfillment in her work–for she has said “I Love it”; and she will overcome her desire to do drugs and others things she did–by which she thought she could fill up that void of her daily existence.

Christabella will survived because of her willingness–how great our country would be if the majority of us would have that determination the Christabella have. But to God be the glory!

Christabella, may God bless you with the energy that you need to do the job He assigned you to. Always keep in your mind, that He was the one who delivered you from you turmoil of existence. I know that you will come to know Him in all His Love and majesty–that is His plan for your Life. Blessings to you dear lady!

I wonder if DNO or the producers of the story could open/set up an account at a local bank or Credit Union in the name of Christabel that would allow people like myself to contribute funds to. There is nothing else I would love to do now and on a regular basis than to show how much I have been touched and moved by her story. Let’s do something!

Your addiction is not over yet lady , actually you are in recovery for life, you really need a network to stay of the drug, a network of crack users in recovery, some one to call while you crave, for which you will. Please remember that your cravings will last for fifteen minutes for quite a few times a day, so please call a user in recovery , or eat something or suck a sweet. Remember don’t get angry, lonely, hungry, and bored. Stay away from places, people and things, that can lead you back to use.. And don’t drink alcohol that will certainly bring you back to crack… wish you the best..

Wow! The strength and determination of a woman. I am so touched by this story. I wanna help this lady in some way. She is an inspiration to all women. I love her work attitude, her sense of humor, her courage and her faith.

Some times we see people on the streets but all we see is the smile on their faces and not the scars on their hearts. I feel the pain she suffered from being abused by her own father and step father. God, I hope those bastards are suffering for all the hurt and pain they caused their own child.

Christabella I pray you Jah’ richest blessings and guidance always. I’m not Dominica and I am all the way in New York reading your story and feeling so empowered.

DNO you have done the reading public a great favor by posting this inspiring story.

There are readers who need to know our past does not have to dictate our future. It is possible to change.

Christabella decided to change. She saw an opportunity and seized it. I like the way she went after the job instead of waiting for it to come to her. Now she is a contributing member of society.

Christabella, if you are not a Christian your chance of being successful is much greater if you have Jesus Christ in your corner! None of us can make it it alone. We need HIM to forgive the sins we have committed which stand between us and HIM. Then HE gives us peace with God and an unfailing hope for the future by being with us every step of the way.

You have a lot to offer. There are many young people who have drug problems. I hope you will have opportunities to share your story with them. And I am praying that JESUS will be part of your story!

DNO thank you for writing and posting this inspiring report.

Great story BUT, she has to stay vigilant. Staying clean is going to be the most difficult task he has to endure. I know of people who fell off the wagon 10 years or more after they cleaned up.

My brother was an addict and I had to arrange to get him into rehab and I saw people who were on their 3rd. or 4th round of rehab.

I hope she stays clean, but as I said, she has to recognize the forks in the road and make sure to take the right path.

Don’t worry God has a plan for you, Bella, right in those gutters. He knows why you are there. Stay there until he tells you to move. I know what I’m talking about.

I always know her to be a clean person. There was never dirt on Christabelle’s floor. I saw her through her struggles. Helped her when I could even in the VI’s. I knew she would finally make it that’s why I never gave up on her even when others were pushing me to.

Such strong, true words from Bella. It does take a strong person to make certain admissions. My eyes are filled with tears especially knowing that you are in a better place. Keep reaching for the stars Bella…You will definitely take one and keep it …You wait and see.

All I can say is WOW! What a touching story. God is good. When I hear such stories I am reminded of the words of the apostle Paul. “Had it not been for the grace of God….” Sister do not take your story lightly it will bring hope to many. Kudos to the person who did this interview. I like the fact that you gave her the opportunity to tell her story with minimum questioning. It just send chills all over my body. I hope this get a lot of views. Wow!

Like she said things are going to get worse .I think we should take that to mean that we have alot of work to do .I suggest we take this clipping and show it at all schools to discourauge those who are already going down that road.We have a perfect example of one who got out,it think it is our duty to try to others!we may not be so lucky with our kids growing up to get out !thank God she did .I m so proud of her .

    Christabella George,

Your story is one that many can learn from. You’ve demonstrated that with determination and persistence one can really overcome his or her demons, even in times when you may think all is lost. Thanks for inspiring many and may the Almighty continue to guide and protect you.

Sometimes we as society force these ppl to remain in the life they live when we criticize and bad talk them. The past is the past if they going to change we always help and BE POSITIVE

Some of them are yearning for help but there is no one to help them. People fear them. This is where especially politicians, government officials come in. They leave these people to their own devices and they go from bad to worse. If they wish to help them they could do something about it.
There is also a tendency for some people to tease them and treat them as if they are nobodies. How could they ever change if they are treated in such a manner, disrespectfully?
This lady was fortunate that God directly put his hand on her and caused her to change her life around. She is a model for the youths who especially take drugs to emulate. Of course, others as well that they stay away from these dangerous and destructive drugs.

    April 15, 2014

I know her so well. I was so happy to see her off the drugs. And the town is certainly cleaner since she has been working. Such pride in her work. Well done christerbel

    • Simply the Truth
      April 15, 2014

I hope she is well-paid that she has enough to live on and to purchase food. I also hope that she is given a bonus at Christmas or at the end of the year in recognition of her diligent work by keeping the area clean. The townspeople should come together to honor her accordingly. This will also assist her to work the more and to continue staying away from drugs.
When they know they are loved, cared for and appreciated, it surely helps. We are important in the eyes of God. We, in turn, should make others feel they are important. Someone as her deserves it. In turn, they will do their utmost not to disappoint those who appreciate them, respect them and show them recognition. They will know that life is worth living and live a fruitful life.

WHAT A POWERFUL INSPIRING MESSAGE. What wonderful resolve, courage and determination inspite of adversity.

Churches, youth groups, drug prevention units fighting drugs can use this ladies experiences to help others. You heard her well – she needs a forum for dialogue, conversation, counsel and help.

AND REMEMBER TO HELP HER WITH HER NEEDS TOO. She wants to build her home – help her too !!!

Churches collect monies for “Missions” which is very noble and honorable and Godly – here is a mission to undertake.

I wish her and her children more success.

God bless those who had faith in her to trust her with the job. They too need our prayers of blessings.

it is a solid lesson to all of us to look out for one another and not scorn or look down on others but to uplift and strengthen and encourage.

More success to those who did such a splendid documentary.

Amazing! These are the stories that we need to share. Where there is life, there is hope. We all have a purpose, which we must seek, find and try our utmost best to fullfil the reason for our existence. I am very disappointed in some of the Church Leaders. Many have failed to reach out to these people because the Church has become a place of business. They are more concerned about acquiring wealth. Shame! Church leaders, please serve your purpose…win souls for the Messiah! He is not interested in riches, the Good Lord wants to save lives. Mam, thanks for answering the Almighty’s calling. Wishing you many blessings and rewards from the Almighty!

    So touching, you made me cry. My brother died a drug addict and I never wish that on anyone. So to you I say, The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face shine on you and be gracious to you;
the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace

    April 15, 2014

Wow this is powerful. I love this lady’s spirit, she is an inspiration and holds a wealth of experience. She has a lot to offer and would advise the youth officials to use Christabelle as an advocate for change in the lives of the youth. She also takes pride in her work. On reading this piece I look within and realize that I was no where close to Christabelle in her love for her job, her devotion and the pride she took. This is just remarkable. On a lighter note I think we need Christabelle in Roseau.
