Shane Shillingford returns home to hero’s welcome

Shillingford was welcomed home on Sunday night

“Just like a tree planted by the water
Shane shall not be moved.”

The atmosphere had the air of a religious ceremony and with shouts of “hooray,” fans of Dominican off spinner, Shane Shillingford, gave him a hero’s welcome back to his homeland on Sunday night at the Melville Hall Airport.

Shillingford was suspended for the second time last week by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for his bowling action base on, it said, independent biomechanical analysis.

But last night this was far from Shillingford’s mind and he appeared surprised that so many fans had turned out to greet him.

“I don’t even know how to explain it,” he said. “I wasn’t expecting all that people, just to see my family and fans and villagers, it is very overwhelming for me. I feel so happy, it is just explainable.”

The cricketer said he was not in a position to go into any details of the ICC’s action, only saying, “there are some plans coming ahead, as the coach told me.”

“It has not been the easiest,” Shillingford admitted of the ban. “It definitely is not going to get the better of me. I am a type of person, I know there is a cycle of life and that is how things happen. I am just waiting for plans on the way forward…”

He remarked that he has plans to make it back to the international cricket pitch. “The coach and I spoke … going through the report seems very surprising …nevertheless the damage has been done already and I am just looking forward to assisting anyway of whatever plan the coach has and moving forward,” he stated.

Shillingford, originally from Dublanc, was first suspended in December 2010 for bowling action in Sri Lanka and was cleared by the ICC in June 2011.

listen, this is ridiculuos! Some people are making sense on this topic others are not. Shane obviously has a problem. We want Dominica to be the best but don’t cheer on one of our sons and they are not playing a fair game. Do we really care about his career? Let us give him tough love, Shane go back and stop chuckling or what you are doing with the ball. No one is trying to keep you down it is your actions, it is obvious you are getting support, but it is preposterous to see others are cheering yodoing a violation. You need to work on your bowling, you have gone far, if that is how you can bowl, then you will remain suspended. It is obvious that you can do much better since you have reached thus far.
So I will encourage you for not giving up, and congratulate you for reaching so far, but I will not condone breaking the rules,, because we want you to move ahead, and breaking the rules will not get you to move ahead.

The common denominator in both of Shane’s suspensions in the umpire Kettleborough of England. The highest number of wickets he ever took in all of his cricketing career at any one time is two. Rauf and Davis umpired Shane’s appearance against South Africa and found nothing wrong with his bowling action. Yet the same umpires, when they teamed up with Kettleborough in Sri Lanka in 2010 found Shane’s action so-called suspect. Having done my research, I see Kettleborough’s name surfacing among other umpires who “find’ Shane’s action suspect. What does Kettleborough have against Shane? I certainly want to know.

Shane need to fix his action or find a new career.

A set of misguided people cheering him on wont change his current status.

I mean people cheer on gangsters and drug dealers too. Doesnt mean a thing other than they have low standards.

Of earthen clay you were built Dominican strong, that will not break you. I know you can’t imagine that people would brave wind and rain to welcome you, but you see you are loved and treasured more than you know, my brother from another mother. Stand tall always, that too shall pass. It can’t be easy on you, increasingly becoming the target of people too bitter to understand you are doing what has been naturally gifted to you. You Shane have to change the laws of cricket, without lifting a finger, you wait and see. You have already broken the code!

@ Anonymous short up and look on the brighter side and keep your negative energies to yourself.I am pretty sure that Shane felt really uplifted, knowing that in spite of the set back we all have his back and he is covered with prayers. And that indeed will give him more strength and courage to accomplish greater things.

That’s why we are mired in mediocrity… I watched the game and though i am no expert Shane was definitely chucking.. it was easily noticeable.

Shane needs our support but dont be putting in the man head that anyone is against him because that is not true
He needs to work out the kink in his action and hopefully return to professional cricket.

Is all them obeah and downpressor stories there that keeping us down ….

Somebody’s head must be in the sand. Shilling ford is the one where we do not want him to be and he will remain there until he sorts thing out, one way or the other. So let us get rid of this “they fighting me down” nonsense. Support him yes, encourage him yes, but laud him? Come on.

Anonymous don’t you know that the ICC changed the rules of bowling action for Mulalitheran from Sri Lanka who has the World Record for the most wickets Surely we do not expect them to change the rules for Shane, but by the grace of god Shane will persevere.Be what it may based on his achievements and his bowling record he must be complimented.

Shane must tell himself that he needs to work even harder to overcome this unjust obstacle. When you come from a small country like DA many persons even from within the Caribbean want to see you fail. They tried the same with Billy Doctrove but he went on to become one of the best umpires in the world so you too Shane can go on and prove the doubters wrong. We are 100% behind you.

It’s laughable that Shane was called for chucking in Sri lanka when Sri lanka has two of the biggest chuckers in world cricket (Malinga & Mulalitheran).
Keep your head high Shane, You will overcome.

These Dominican fans behaving just like the Iraqis. The more the Americans bomb then, the more they say they winning the war.

Why would Shane be a hero when he was found to be chucking. What is heroic about that? He need our support, but a “hero’s” welcome?
