Tommy Lee Sparta has been taken to the Marigot Hospital with muscle spasms and blood clots to his legs, attorney representing the artiste, Tehani Behanzin, has said.
He stated this is because the artiste was forced to sleep on the concrete floor at the Marigot Police Station where he is being held after he was denied entry into Dominica and arrested on Sunday night.
“They escorted everybody in the hospital out and they locked down the hospital … windows were closed, doors were closed and they have him in there…” he said.
The attorney stated that Tommy Lee is complaining of pain to his legs, which is the result of an accident some time ago.
Behanzin said the artiste’s local representatives tried to negotiate getting him some cardboard to sleep on last night, without success.
“So the cold has affected his legs and he has difficulties with muscles spasms and blood clotting in the legs,” he stated.
Meanwhile, DNO understands that the decision to deny entry to Tommy Lee was taken at cabinet level on the basis that he was a security risk.
However, this has not been confirmed by the government.
Tommy Lee was set to perform at a concert in Portsmouth on Sunday night, however he was denied entry and subsequently arrested when he arrived in Dominica.

The police told this guy after he landed to go back on his plane… he refused to go back, what part of ‘refused to go back on his plane’ people not getting. Of course the decision to ban Tommy Lee Sparta came from the top. Dominicans are not fools to believe that a little Customs officer or a police constable or an immigration officer could take such a decision.
What frightens me is the fact that those at the top who took the decision are not Man enough to claim up and say we took the decision to ban the artist, we do not have to give any explanation, go to hell, who vex lost, we have no apologies to make for our decision, chapter end book close.

I am Bajan. I have been following this situation over the last 12 hours on internet radio (I love Dominican culture). I heard the people including the promoters and lawyers vent their concerns on the air waves. But they kept asking the same question, “How could we treat a visiting artist like this?” Are you serious? WHAT ABOUT YOUR FELLOW DOMINICANS? How many alleged injustices have you seen or heard of but chose to keep silent because it was only a young ‘nobody’ Dominican being allegedly denied his constitutional and human rights whilst in police custody? Doesn’t the young Dominican male sleep on the same concrete floor whist in Police custody? Of course he does! But yet I have not heard any one of you called for a review of police procedures or Immigration procedures in dealing with persons in custody. Neither did you demand the authorities to bring the care and handling of persons in Police custody up to internationally accepted human right standards. But instead you chose to get political and call upon your government to step down because you missed a concert. Take care of the rights of your own people and then the rights of all others would automatically be guarantee as well. Look and learn from Barbados and other Caribbean nations. Barbados was forced during the last 10 years to put procedures and facilities in place to respect and protect the rights of the person in Police and Immigration custody. Recently they made more immigration changes in light of the Caribbean Court of Justice ruling in the Jamaican Shanique Myrie case. Now we respect and acknowledge the right of CARICOM nationals to freely land and stay on the island for at least 6 months and the rights of artists to work without a permit. Only this month ST Lucia brought in Human Rights organizations to train the Police about human rights etc. Focus on the positive change you can get out of this unfortunate situation. Respect and full love to Dominica and its wonderful people.

SOT! The criminal justice system WORLDWIDE is not geared to the comfort of detained individuals. Let me tell you something about overnight jail cells in New York. Visiting someone there in the Bronx, I saw first hand what the cells look like – they pack about 15 – 20 people in there, there’s one bench and you have to make yourself there. In fact if you have muscle spasms physicians will usually tell you to sleep on a solid surface as it will take pressure off of your supporting muscles.
