Former West Indies cricketer and Dominican, Adam Sanford with his wife, Julenta, are reporting success in a barrel drive and fund raiser which will go towards assisting victims of Tropical Storm Erika.
They were assisted in the venture on the weekend by his two nieces.
Sanford, who is now US-based, said the idea was born when various videos on the effects of the storm on the island, which were going viral over the internet, hit home for him.
“In times like these when you sit and you listen and you see what is happening to your people back home … we sat home, and we were like ‘wow what can we do?’,” he told Dominica News Online.
Sanford said that he decided to use his influence and popularity in sports circles in the New York area to organize a raffle. The proceeds, he said, will be sent to Dominica.
He stated that a barrel drive also sounded like a good idea.
Together with his wife, nieces and cricket club, Big Apple CC, supplies were collected on Sunday during a match played against Liberty Sports Club at the Baisley Pond Park in Queens, New York on Sunday.
“We didn’t know where or how it was going to come but as believers we said we can do it,” Sanford stated. “And it started. We got the barrels, and we said if we get it here, we can full it.”
He said other sports personnel rallied with him and they are thankful for that.
His wife, Julenta Copiel-Sanford, who is a former beauty queen of Dominica said over ten barrels are now filled and are ready to be shipped with food items, clothing and others.
“We had a goal of 10 barrels and it seems that we have exceeded that goal so far,” she stated.

It’s nice to see Julenta after all these years. I know her as a resident in Virgin Lane in Roseau when she was attending DGS. I also know her brother Joe. Thanks to her and her husband for their efforts.
