Two pupils of the Laudat Primary School showed how familiar a topic ICT already is among Dominica’s school population, when they were awarded for winning an essay on the topic “How can schools make the best use of information technology in the classroom.”
The essay was organized by Government’s Information and Communication Technology Unit, the driving force behind a three day ICT Fest which was launched on Tuesday at Windsor Park Stadium.
Shanesse Rolle and Lucio George, both from Laudat, captured the two top positions in the essay competition. Shermiah Dover John of the Convent Preparatory took third place.
Rolle got a laptop as her prize while George and John each received a printer.
Jeanne Royer, a young woman of Goodwill, was awarded for winning the King’s Computer Corporation Logo competition which was held to select a logo for ICT Fest.
Organizers of the festival say its aim is to help create the necessary avenues to ensure that Information and Communication Technologies are accessible to all citizens of Dominica
The event runs until July 4, 2013 under the theme “Empowering Citizens, Embracing the Future.”
Seminars on the concept of Internet Exchange Point, Visual Effects and Visual Programming, Cloud Computing and Music Production, eMarketing in Tourism and ICT in Manufacturing, are some of the activities slated for this year’s festival.
Parliamentary Secretary in the office of the Prime Minister, Kelver Darroux, spoke at the opening of the event and pointed to what the government is doing to advance the sector considered one of the most dynamic in Dominica’s economy.
“We ensure that all our schools have ICT labs so that our students will have first hand knowledge on how to use the computer. In every community should have a resource center which will allow the common citizen access to a computer and the opportunity to learn. Everyone has to get involved if we are to strengthen this sector. We are implementing legislation that will protect citizens conducting their private business on the internet.”
Employees, according to senior administrative officer in the Establishment, Personnel and Training department, Ruth Allport, must ensure that they are adequately trained and able to adapt to changes brought about by the advancement in technology.
Individuals who are unable to update their knowledge fast enough, face the risk of marginalization, Allport pointed out.
Sending lots of love from England.very proud shanesse .xx
Well done shanesse xxx
Thank you Admin for the pics…even if my previous post were deleted you did make amends. Thanks alot
Lots of retailers. From the Minister’s speech I would have expected more of a governmental presence. What are the public servants doing to make information service available to the public?
If the idea is to have a strong ICT industry in Dominica, then this is ideal, because it would be better for government to stay out of the way and let entrepreneurs build it.
well organised
What a great initiative by the responsible parties. We need more events of this nature to take place in the country as ICT is the future and we need to generate as much interest as possible in that field. Our people are talented and intelligent and we need to harness those abilities to make our mark on the global level in the advancement and use of technology.
I honestly expected more from LIME.
So what are we doing to ensure that every community has a resource center?
