More than 100 people have been arrested in connection with looting across east and south London, following a major riot in Tottenham at the weekend.
Disturbances erupted in several boroughs, with reports of trouble in Enfield, Brixton, Walthamstow and Islington.
Home Secretary Theresa May has said she will come back from holiday to meet with senior police officers.
The Home Office stressed she has been in constant touch with the Metropolitan Police about the weekend’s events.
Ms May said: “Those responsible for the violence and looting will be made to face the consequences of their actions.
“Many have been arrested and further arrests will be made.
“Londoners have made clear that there are no excuses for violence, and I call on all members of local communities to work constructively with the police to help them bring these criminals to justice.”
Riot police and dog handlers were called to Enfield on Sunday evening after a group of youths caused damage to shops.
Disorder then spread to Brixton in the early hours of this morning, where a number of shops were also attacked and looted.
The London Fire Brigade sent six units to fight a fire at a Foot Locker store.
Other shops attacked by mobs, described by police as “small and mobile groups”, included Currys, Halfords and The Body Shop.
The gathering outside Tottenham police station was a peacefull gathering. They were there because Mark Duggan was shot and killed by the police. The incident happened in Tottenham/North London, so why has it spread across London. Even cities as far as Birmingham, Liverpool, Leeds, Bristol and Nottingham.
The rioters do not care about Mark Duggan and his family. They are there to steal, to cause as much damage, set as many properties as they can on fire. They are well organised. They are mainly targeting shops like Argos, Currys,Mobile phone shops Footlocker and warehouse depots. Any major high street and shopping centre.
They have no respect for anyone. Hope they know that the police will not stop searching for them (they’ve been caught on CCTV).
Its sad to see streets/areas that I’ve walked looking like a war zone.
