13-year-old Missouri boy gives up talking for Lent

SENECA, Missouri – One Missouri teenager has been very quiet since the beginning of March. He gave up talking for Lent.

KOAM-TV reports Decklan Conway, of Seneca, has taken a vow of silence.

Since Lent began on March 9, the 13-year-old has relied on a dry-erase board and markers to communicate with others. This includes school teachers, parents and friends.

The Joplin television station reports Decklan’s brother Kyle was planning to take the oath with him, but a scheduled science fair and speech and debate forced him to back out.

Some of Decklan’s teachers said they were worried it would be a distraction in class, but his grades have actually improved.

“It was a big deal the first day,” Math teacher Dawn Pickering said, “and then after that it really hasn’t been a distraction at all.”

Decklan said he didn’t take the vow of silence for media attention or popularity. He gave up talking because he believes in God.

“I lost some friends because I couldn’t talk. I don’t really care because I’m doing it for a greater purpose,” Decklan wrote.

For all of you who gave negative feedback upon reading about the actions of this young man, the saying goes…empty vessels make the most noise. BE WISE AND TRY OUT THE “SILENCE”, AS PORTRAYED BY THE TEENAGER. You will reap the benefits.

Ok he’s thirteen not even old enough to participate in the fast and maybe him not talking once and a while is a blessing if he talks too much just like a Catholic priest sits in solitude in his free time he could have been quiet so he didn’t miss a single word of God’s voice.

dude taking is a gift, you think that is proving anything, what you have faith? do you know how many people wish they could talk? why don’t you help the hungry, homeless or those with less than you, making a difference in somebody’s life would be more effective for lent.

I don’t see anything Godly or spiritual in a 13 yr. old child not talking in the month of March. What we all need to do.Is to repent of our sins, trusting Christ as Savior and Lord, and live a life pleasing to Him every day of our lives here on earth. Not just during the so-call lenten season.

Does it make any sense, or who do we think we are fooling? to play holy during the lenten season` and after Easter Sunday, according to DBS. “Return to normal programming”
“Be not deceived God is not mocked”.

It’s a thirteen year old boy. He’s a child. He must be commended. That is his sacrifice for the season of Lent. We can be so negative and pessimistic sometimes and think we are doing good.

commended for what? where is the sacrifice, who is he buying lunch for today?. The sacrifice should be taking what he has and giving it to others who do not have.

Good role modelling for the young people. Sometimes we do to much talking and not enough listening. Due to listening, he is achieving better grades! Great idea!

But stupess, you funny! I cants see where in my post that I am bring down the kid. I was referring to all those big grown men and women that continue to practice the double game. It can’t be right to say that you are doing everything godly for Lenten season knowing after it’s all over; you are back to the same old thing. It’s a nasty tradition and people need to take heed. God is a selfish god. Not some joke.

What bless and what type of bless! Such silly comments which make no sense whatsoever.
You cannot speak for God. You do not know the mind of God.
As the saying goes: Speak for yourself.
Just wait when you have a problem and you will not hesitate to pray to God.

This is interesting to read. I applaud this 13 year old boy. It is indeed a genuine sacrifice and abstinence for Lent. If he keeps up his godliness he will make a holy Christian and eventually a saint.
A saintly person stated in the ancient days: “Speak less to people and more to God.”
A holy Polish nun, since passed away and who received apparitions and messages from Our Lord Jesus Christ in the 1930’s , said that He told her: “The din (of talking) bothers him”, as documented in the book, The Diary of Sister (Saint) Faustina Kowalska – Divine Mercy In My Soul.
I have said that if it bothered Our Lord so much in that age and previous to that, consider how it bothers him today with the increased population.
Consider the futile and useless talk which serves no useful purpose which does not enhance our lives, education, holiness, mortal and spiritual perfection. This means the nonsense which people speak (and write) and laugh about and even applaud, giving credence to nonsensical and uneducating words.
Jokes are jokes specifically good, clean ones which make us laugh. This is something different. Our Lord does not expect us to be always serious. Laughter is good for the heart and mind. After all, there is a time and place for everything.
Our Lord said: Matthew 12:33:37 – A Tree and It’s Fruits – …For, from the fullness of the heart, the mouth speaks… I tell you on the Day of Judgment people will render an account for every careless (idle) word they speak. By your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.
The same applies to those who write a lot of nonsense and call others stupid and other derogatory words on this Website which are rather unloving and unChristian-like. I wish that they learn a lesson from this young child. He is a good example to others and is pleasing to God.

Perhaps we could follow his lead and try to dump at least one of our vices for the lentern season. If we succeed for the season, who knows, it might become a habit. I will try to stop jumping to conclusions about things I do not know. If I succeed it would be a great improvement in my personality.
