6-year-old Oregon boy crashes vehicle after taking mother’s van to go buy food

KLAMATH FALLS, OREGON (BNO NEWS) — A woman was injured on early Sunday morning after a 6-year-old boy took his mother’s van and crashed it into another vehicle, state police said.

The accident happened at around 7.15 a.m. local time in the south suburbs of Klamath Falls, located in Klamath County, when emergency responders were dispatched to a motor vehicle crash on Birstol Avenue near Fargo Street.

“Upon arriving at the scene, Trooper Sabrina Criswell discovered one of the involved drivers was a 6-year old boy who had taken his mother’s 1996 Plymouth Voyager van and left the family’s apartment westbound on Bristol Avenue,” said State Police Sergeant Robert Fenner.

Fenner said the boy was alone driving the van and crashed into several mailboxes before swerving into the eastbound lane where it crashed head-on with a 1992 Dodge Dakota pickup, which was driven by 29-year-old Tammy J. Belau.

The boy was not injured despite not wearing safety restraints, while Belau suffered minor injuries. “[The boy] said he was hungry, took a roll of pennies from home and drove the van to get some food,” Fenner said. “His name is not being released.”

State Police troopers have begun an investigation with the assistance of the Child Welfare Division of the Department of Human Services. It is unknown how the boy was able to take the vehicle.

Ohh that’s easy…Mommy turns her back and I go joy riding…Kids will be kids, however it is incumbent on the parents to ensure that a list of things are out of a childs reach, including: cleaners, detergents, medication, overall anything which has the risk to cause harm to others while in the possession of a child.

Is he any different from that dog that sat up front on the left hand side of a moving car and the actual driver person sitting up front as well on the right hand side of the moving vehicle causing pedestrians in America to think that it was a dog driving the car causing them also to rush quckly to the sidewalks in stampedes and in fright only to realise on close vehicle approach that the steering wheel this time was on the right hand side and not on the left hand side as is always in America. This little boy is moving on as well sit in limbo watching in awe.

Are you people crazy! kids will be kids and something like that could have happen to any one of us…that’s nothing to joke about, not one person so far said thank God the child was not hurt…

honestly speaking……we as parents should do our best to keep our kids safe.. for they a curious little monkeys…even in cartons which are for their enjoyment and be educational, teaches them imposible things they would love to try….which kid would not long to drive moms car..if they get the chance….

if we are to ask this question! would you like to drive dads van they all would say MEEEEE out..

And that does not mean that she is a bad mother.

Don’t believe everything you read in a newspaper. How can a 6 yr. old reach the pedals on the vehicle to begin with without being almost totally under the dash. There may have been someone else that he was covering for.

Well I can see why you would think that…but my 6 yr old reaches the pedals and can see over the steering wheel at the same time and is for that reason I never leave him in the vehicle while the engine running and I make sure to hide my keys.

Those kids pay alot of attention to us when we’re behind the wheel and given the chance they will try to go for a spin…whether is because they were hungry or they just wanted to go for a ride. Parents be aware.

it is not the first time this is happening in america. all they want to drive is automatic. in fact all they sell there is automatic, from what i know. see now, if it was a manual, that kid would have had to be a lot smarter to get so far. also, i think it is time that these vehicle manufacturers anticipate this problem. we need child locks on the ignition or something…
